Household papular urticaria.

BACKGROUND: Papular urticaria often occurs after bites of insects such as mosquitoes, sandflies, bed bugs and fleas. Multiple bites and local pruritus are characteristic symptoms. Treatment is usually symptomatic and includes antihistamines and corticosteroids. The reappearance of the symptoms can be prevented by successful control of the parasite. OBJECTIVES: To find the causative agent of papular urticaria in afflicted households with involvement of numerous family members, all in a narrow geographic area. PATIENTS: We describe the cases of 20 patients belonging to seven families, who pres

[Notes on fleas (Siphonaptera) in plague foci on the Tay Nguyen plateau (Vietnam)].

The fleas of wild and commensal small mammals, domestic animals (dogs, cats) and free-living flea forms in houses have been collected in plague nidi of Tay Nguyen plate, Dak-Lak province, Vietnam. Pulex irritans, Ctenocephalides felis felis, Ct. felis orientis were found in the houses on dogs, cats and on the ground floor. Commensal rats in populated areas were infested by Xenopsylla cheopis and rarely by Lentistivalius klossi. The agricultural zone was inhabited by both home and wild animals such as commensal, savannah and forest-dwelling small mammals. The flea fauna of this zone is presente

[Tungiasis and myiasis].

Tungiasis (sand flea disease) and myiasis are ectoparasitoses, in which the infectious agent resides temporarily in the skin (myiasis) or dies and is eventually eliminated (tungiasis). Both diseases are zoonoses. Whereas in myiasis humans are only an accidental host, in tungiasis the prevalence in humans is similar to that of their domestic animals. In travellers returning from the tropics tungiasis and myiasis are not rare, however they are frequently misdiagnosed. The diagnosis of both infestations is made clinically, and laboratory investigations are not helpful. In tungiasis the clinical p

Profiling Bartonella infection and its associated risk factors in shelter cats in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Poor disease management and irregular vector control could predispose sheltered animals to disease such as feline Bartonella infection, a vector-borne zoonotic disease primarily caused by Bartonella henselae. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the status of Bartonella infection in cats from eight (n = 8) shelters by molecular and serological approaches, profiling the CD4:CD8 ratio and the risk factors associated with Bartonella infection in shelter cats. METHODS: Bartonella deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was detected through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting 16S-23S rRNA in

[Tungiasis: a case report].

Tungiasis, is a cutaneous parasitosis, native of America caused by Tunga penetrans. Infestations usually presents with black papular lesions, either single or multiple, most of them localized on the feet, mainly in the subungual and periungual areas. Diagnosis of tungiasis is based on the characteristic aspect of the lesions in a patient coming from an endemic area. Surgical removal of the flea and application of a topical antibiotic is the standard treatment. We describe a case of a 10-years-old girl, with multiple lesions localized on feet, who was succesfully treated with ivermectin and sur

Fleas associated with non-flying small mammal communities from northern and central Chile: with new host and locality records.

Fleas associated with small mammals from seven localities from northern and central Chile were assessed. We captured 352 small mammals belonging to 12 species from which we obtained 675 fleas belonging to 15 different species. The most frequently captured flea species were Neotyphloceras crassispina crassispina (n = 198) and N. chilensis (n = 175). High values of flea species richness and diversity were found in Fray Jorge National Park (NP), a north-central Chilean site, whereas the highest values of mean abundance (MA) and prevalence were found in three diverse sites that include Los Molles

The association of host and vector characteristics with Ctenocephalides felis pathogen and endosymbiont infection.

Surveillance of the fleas and flea-borne pathogens infecting cats is important for both human and animal health. Multiple zoonotic Bartonella and Rickettsia species are known to infect the most common flea infesting cats and dogs worldwide: Ctenocephalides felis, the cat flea. The ability of other flea species to transmit pathogens is relatively unexplored. We aimed to determine cat host and flea factors independently associated with flea Bartonella and Rickettsia infection. We also assessed flea and cat infection by flea-host pair and location. To accomplish these aims, we performed qPCR for

Prevalence and patterns of ectoparasites infesting Pallas's squirrels (Callosciurus erythraeus) in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

The Pallas's squirrel (Callosciurus erythraeus) has invaded fragmented woodlands in urban areas of Kanagawa Prefecture, where frequent human contact occurs. We examined 538 squirrels in Hayama-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, for ectoparasite infestations. A total of 1,164 lice, 877 fleas, and 231 ticks were retrieved from 297 (55.2%), 338 (62.8%), and 135 (25.1%) squirrels, respectively. The identified ectoparasite species were Neohaematopinus callosciuri, Ceratophyllus anisus, Haemaphysalis flava, Haemaphysalis hystricis, and Ixodes turdus. The prevalence of N. callosciuri and C. anisus was signi

Flea fitness is reduced by high fractional concentrations of CO₂ that simulate levels found in their hosts' burrows.

Nidicolous ectoparasites such as fleas and gamasid mites that feed on small and medium-sized mammals spend much of their time in their hosts' burrows, which provide an environment for living, and often feeding, to their pre-imaginal and/or adult stages. Thus, these ectoparasites should be adapted to environmental conditions in burrows, including high fractional concentrations of CO2 (F(CO2)). We examined how a high F(CO2) (0.04) affected survival and reproductive success of a hematophagous ectoparasite of burrowing rodents using fleas Xenopsylla ramesis and Sundevall's jirds Meriones crassus.

Characterization of Tunga penetrans antigens in selected epidemic areas in Murang'a county in Kenya.

Tunga penetrans are fleas that cause tungiasis, a condition characterized by high transmission rate due to poor housing conditions, social neglect and inadequate health care in economically disadvantaged communities in developing countries. This study therefore aimed at characterizing jiggers antigens to identify immunodominant ones to help understand immunological behavior of the parasite that would otherwise be important in future control of the parasite. Samples were gravid fleas and blood samples from infested individuals in Kahuro and Murang'a East district in Murang'a County. Freeze and

Burrowing owls as potential phoretic hosts of ground squirrel fleas during a plague epizootic.

During the course of a plague epizootic, decimation of rodent host populations may result in the transfer of fleas to alternate or phoretic hosts, including to sympatric raptors that prey on rodents. We studied flea abundance and flea species assemblages on burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) in southwestern Idaho before (2012 - 2014), during (2015 - 2016), and after (2017) an epizootic of plague in Piute ground squirrels (Urocitellis mollis). We examined (1) if a larger proportion of burrowing owl nests contained fleas, (2) the likelihood that owls within a high flea abundance class

Rickettsia typhi, Bartonella henselae, and related zoonotic agents in fleas from domestic cats (Felis catus) from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

BACKGROUND: Flea-borne rickettsiosis and bartonellosis are emerging diseases in humans and animals. There is increasing concern for the emergence of Rickettsia typhi (agent of murine typhus or flea-borne typhus) in humans of southern USA, for which cats are key reservoirs and cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) serve as the vector. Similarly, multiple species of Bartonella have cats as natural hosts and fleas as vectors, leading to varied disease outcomes in humans, including cat scratch disease and neurobartonellosis. METHODS: To investigate the ecology of Rickettsia and Bartonella pathogens,

Prostatitis, steatitis, and diarrhea in a dog following presumptive flea-borne transmission of Bartonella henselae.

Bartonella henselae is increasingly associated with a variety of pathological entities, which are often similar in dogs and human patients. Following an acute flea infestation, a dog developed an unusual clinical presentation for canine bartonellosis. Comprehensive medical, microbiological, and surgical interventions were required for diagnosis and to achieve a full recovery.

Efficacy of indoor residual spraying using lambda-cyhalothrin for controlling nontarget vector fleas (Siphonaptera) on commensal rats in a plague endemic region of northwestern Uganda.

Over the past two decades, the majority of human plague cases have been reported from areas in Africa, including Uganda. In an effort to develop affordable plague control methods within an integrated vector control framework, we evaluated the efficacy of indoor residual spraying (IRS) techniques commonly used for mosquito control for controlling fleas on hut-dwelling commensal rodents in a plague-endemic region of Uganda. We evaluated both the standard IRS spraying (walls and ceiling) and a modified IRS technique that included insecticide application on not only on walls and ceiling but also a
