A New Strategy to Improve the Toughness of Epoxy Thermosets-By Introducing Poly(ether nitrile ketone)s Containing Phthalazinone Structures.

As high brittleness limits the application of all epoxy resins (EP), here, it can be modified by high-performance thermoplastic poly(ether nitrile ketone) containing phthalazinone structures (PPENK). Therefore, the influence of different PPENK contents on the mechanical, thermal, and low-temperature properties of EP was comprehensively investigated in this paper. The binary blend of PPENK/EP exhibited excellent properties due to homogeneous mixing and good interaction. The presence of PPENK significantly improved the mechanical properties of EP, showing 131.0%, 14.2%, and 10.0% increases in im

Effects of nanosilver and nanozinc incorporated mesoporous calcium-silicate nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of dentin.

Mesoporous calcium-silicate nanoparticles (MCSNs) are advanced biomaterials for drug delivery and mineralization induction. They can load silver and exhibit significantly antibacterial effects. However, the effects of MCSNs and silver-loaded MCSNs on dentin are unknown. The silver (Ag) and/or zinc (Zn) incorporated MCSNs (Ag-Zn-MCSNs) were prepared by a template method, and their characterizations were tested. Then the nanoparticles were filled into root canals and their effects on the dentin were investigated. Ag-Zn-MCSNs showed characteristics of mesoporous materials and sustained release of

Role of silicate-rich and silicate-less industrial solid wastes in the physicomechanical properties and durability of low quality metakaolin-blended cement.

Although calcined clay-blended cement offers higher performance and durability compared to neat Portland cement (PC), its extensive use of natural clay leads to the depletion of natural non-renewable resources. To address this concern, this study focuses on the utilization of supplementary cementitious materials-based waste products as a substitute for PC. The blended cement was optimized with a low replacement level of 10 wt.% calcined Fanja clay (FNJ) as a low-grade metakaolin (MK) and 90 wt.% PC. Various types of industrial solid wastes (ISWs) were incorporated into the PC-FNJ blend in plac

Inspired by Reinforced-Concrete Structures: High-Strength, Stable, Sustainable Reed-Based Plastics.

Green and sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics can reduce environmental pollution and alleviate the resource crisis. Reed straw (Rs) is a rapidly growing, eco-friendly, low-cost, and natural fiber with great potential as a sustainable resource. However, the development of high-performance plastic substitutes from Rs is challenging owing to its weak interfacial bonding. Herein, inspired by the structure of reinforced concrete, a top-down strategy is adopted using a simple and rapid physical-filling and directional-assembly method in which the adhesive is evenly filled and adhere

Fabrication and mechanical properties of PLLA/PCL/HA composites via a biomimetic, dip coating, and hot compression procedure.

Currently, the bone-repair biomaterials market is dominated by high modulus metals and their alloys. The problem of stress-shielding, which results from elastic modulus mismatch between these metallic materials and natural bone, has stimulated increasing research into the development of polymer-ceramic composite materials that can more closely match the modulus of bone. In this study, we prepared poly(L: -lactic acid)/hydroxyapatite/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PLLA/HA/PCL) composites via a four-step process, which includes surface etching of the fiber, the deposition of the HA coating onto the

Evaluation of different monomer compositions in polymer-infiltrated lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) glass-ceramic.

This study aimed to fabricate hybrid blocks by infiltrating various resin compositions into pre-sintered porous lithium disilicate (Li₂Si₂O₅) scaffolds and to evaluate their surface characteristics, mechanical properties, and cytocompatibility. Hybrid ceramic-polymer blocks were produced using mixtures of Bis-GMA, UDMA, and TEGDMA monomers, polymerized at 300 MPa and 180 °C. Four groups (BT82, BT55, UT55, UT73) with different monomer ratios were tested. Complete resin infiltration was achieved in all groups. Surface roughness, contact angle, and water sorption showed no significant differences

Self-healing epoxy coating synthesis by embedment of metal 2-methyl imidazole and acetylacetonate complexes with microcapsules.

The restoration of mechanical properties is desired for creating the self-healing coatings with no corrosion capabilities. The encapsulation of epoxy resins is limited by various factors in urea and melamine formaldehyde microcapsules. An improved method was developed, where epoxy resin was encapsulated by individual wrapping of poly(melamine-formaldehyde) and poly(urea-formaldehyde) shell around emulsified epoxy droplets via oil-in-water emulsion polymerization method. The synthesized materials were characterized analytically. The curing of the epoxy was achieved by adding the [Ni/Co(2-MI)6].

Multiscale Characterization of Jute/Flax Biocomposites: Enhancing Stiffness and Durability for Load-Bearing Rehabilitation Devices.

In recent years, there has been a substantial rise in the utilization of natural fibers as a means of reinforcement in the production of polymer matrix composites. This is mostly owing to the inherent benefits it offers, including its eco-friendly nature, widespread availability, low density, and relatively high strength. Jute and flax fibers are examples of natural fibers that exhibit superior mechanical qualities as compared to other natural fibers. These fibers are widely available across the Indian subcontinent, making them cost-effective and conveniently accessible. The present work detai

Effect of Fiber Mass Fraction on Microstructure and Properties of 2D CF-GO/EP Composite Prepared by VIHPS.

Graphene is often used to improve interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites. It is still a challenge to improve the toughness while maintaining the in-layer properties. In this study, 2D graphene oxide carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin matrix (2D CF-GO/EP) composites were prepared by a vacuum infiltration hot-press forming experimental system (VIHPS), and three-point flexural and end notch flexural (ENF) tests were carried out. With the increase of the fiber mass fraction in the composites, the mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) layers decreas

Toughening Mechanism and Nonlinear Water-to-Binder Ratio Effects in Multi-Scale Steel Fiber-Calcium Carbonate Whisker Reinforced Concrete.

The toughening efficiency of multiscale fibers is strongly coupled with the matrix state, yet how the water-to-binder (w/b) ratio shifts the governing reinforcement mechanism remains unclear. Two w/b regimes representing distinct matrix conditions were therefore incorporated into a three-factor, four-level orthogonal design, with water, steel-fiber, and calcium carbonate whisker dosages as variables. Compressive, flexural, and direct tensile strengths, together with failure characteristics, were evaluated to track the transition in mechanical response across the two regimes. In the low w/b rat

Static and Dynamic Performances of Chopped Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Mortar and Concrete Incorporated with Disparate Lengths.

The impact load, such as seismic and shock wave, sometimes causes severe damage to the reinforced concrete structures. This study utilized different lengths of chopped carbon fibers to develop a carbon-fiber-reinforced mortar (CFRM) and carbon-fiber-reinforced concrete (CFRC) with high impact and anti-shockwave resistance. The different lengths (6, 12, and 24 mm) of chopped carbon fibers were pneumatically dispersed and uniformly mixed into the cement with a 1% weight proportion. Then the CFRM and CFRC specimens were made for static and dynamic tests. The compressive and flexural strengths of
