Confocal microscopy assessment of lymphoid tissues with follicular hyperplasia from patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection of lymphoid tissues during follicular hyperplasia. METHODS: We examined 10 tonsil/adenoid, 3 parotid lymphoepithelial cyst, and 7 lymph node specimens that had been surgically removed from 13 patients infected with HIV-1. Characteristics of productive HIV-1 infection were assessed using immunocytochemistry for HIV-1 p24. Cellular colocalization was determined with the aid of a confocal microscope using double immunofluorescent staining for HIV-1 p24 and cell-specific markers. RESULTS: All specimens showed follicular hype

Basaloid folliculolymphoid hyperplasia with alopecia as an expression of mycosis fungoides (CTCL).

Follicular mucinosis, papules, cysts and comedones have been previously described as expressions of follicular involvement by mycosis fungoides. We report a patient with mycosis fungoides who developed extensive alopecia. Multiple scalp biopsies showed perifollicular and intrafollicular infiltrate of lymphocytes but no evident follicular mucinosis. On transverse sections many of the follicles showed an absence of differentiation towards hair sheath, canal, sebaceous gland or hair formation, but instead formed undifferentiated basaloid structures. These basaloid structures showed transition fro

Eruptive vellus hair cysts.

A 20-year-old man presented with multiple, asymptomatic, follicular papules that were distributed over his abdomen. Microscopic examination showed classic features of a vellus hair cyst. The term eruptive vellus hair cysts refers to a benign condition, which may be inherited or acquired. Apart from occasional pruritus, cosmetic disability is the chief concern of most patients. An estimated 25 percent of lesions remit spontaneously; however, treatment of persistent lesions is often challenging with disappointing results.

Lymphoepithelial cyst of the parotid gland: its possible histopathogenesis based on clinicopathologic analysis of 64 cases.

Sixty-four cases of lymphoepithelial cysts of the parotid gland, the largest scale collection in the literature, were clinicopathologically analyzed for their possible pathogenesis. All 64 cases were unilateral, 27 left and 37 right. There were 28 male and 36 female patients with a ratio of 1:1.3. The mean age of the patients was 52.0 years, and their average duration of symptoms was 29.3 months. The mean longest diameter of the cysts was 3.0 cm. Histologically, lymphoepithelial cysts were classified into 3 subtypes: type I, a cystic dilation of ducts within parotid glands (9 cases, 14.1%); ty

[Chance finding of foetal and neonatal ovarian cysts on echography].

Cystic abnormalities of the adnex were found by chance in 2 baby girls, one aged 2.5 months and the other aged 2 months. Both had been born dysmaturely and the abnormalities were found on echographic investigation carried out for suspected urinary-tract infection. On monitoring investigation one month later, the abnormalities had become smaller and some time later had disappeared altogether. With the increasing use of ultrasound, ovarian cysts are being detected more often in the foetus and neonate. The majority of these cysts are benign functional follicular cysts and resolve spontaneously. T

Sine Qua Non: Dentigerous Cyst.

Dentigerous cysts, also known as follicular cysts, are among the most common developmental cysts of the gnathic bones. The majority of cases are clinically asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on panographic radiographs during routine dental care. The cyst appears as a radiolucency, classically unilocular, associated with the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Usually diagnosed in the 2nd-3rd decade, third molars of the mandible are the most commonly affected teeth. Histologically, dentigerous cysts demonstrate a fibrous or fibromyxoid connective tissue wall lined by squamous epithel

Immunohistochemical study of calretinin in normal skin and cutaneous adnexal proliferations.

Calretinin is a calcium-binding protein member of the EF-hand family. The presence of calretinin has been demonstrated in certain stages of the cellular cycle in a wide variety of normal and neoplastic tissues. The main aims of our study were (1) to investigate what structures of the normal skin and cutaneous adnexal proliferations express immunoreactivity for calretinin and (2) to determine the value of immunohistochemical expression for calretinin as a marker for follicular, sebaceous, apocrine, and eccrine differentiation in cutaneous adnexal proliferations. We studied 139 biopsy specimens,

A Rare Presentation of a Giant Epidermoid Inclusion Cyst Mimicking Malignancy.

Epidermoid inclusion cysts, infundibular cysts, and retention cysts are dense, well-encapsulated benign soft tissue lesions that develop after a portion of the epidermis has become implanted in the dermis on a follicular surface such as the scalp, face, or trunk. However, on acral surfaces such as the palms and soles, these cysts present <10% of the time. Typically, these lesions will not progress to sizes >5 cm. However, a rare subtype of epidermal cysts known as giant epidermal cysts tends to be much larger. Unlike epidermal inclusion cysts, giant cysts lack a central punctum, present on are

Basaloid follicular hamartoma with eruptive milia and hypohidrosis: is there a pathogenic relationship ?

We report a sporadic case of eruptive milia with histopathological features of basaloid follicular hamartoma which developed in an 8 year-old Japanese girl. Multiple milia and comedo-like eruptions were present at birth and gradually increased in number and spread over the extremities. Histopathologically, keratotic cysts with trichilemmal keratinization and features of basaloid follicular hamartoma were observed without any histological findings of basal cell epithelioma or trichoepithelioma. Reduced sweating was observed after iontophoretically applied acetylcholine on the forearm. Nevus of

Increase in endogenous estradiol in the progeny of obese rats is associated with precocious puberty and altered follicular development in adulthood.

Maternal obesity during pregnancy has been related with several pathological states in offspring. However, the impact of maternal obesity on reproductive system on the progeny is beginning to be elucidated. In this work, we characterize the effect of maternal obesity on puberty onset and follicular development in adult offspring in rats. We also propose that alterations in ovarian physiology observed in offspring of obese mothers are due to increased levels of estradiol during early development. Offspring of control dams and offspring of dams exposed to a high-fat diet (HF) were studied at pos

Inhibition of mTOR Signaling Pathway Delays Follicle Formation in Mice.

In mammalian ovaries, follicle assembly requires proper germ cell cyst breakdown and the invasion of somatic cells to encapsulate individual oocytes. Abnormalities in this process lead to a number of pathologies such as premature ovarian failure and infertility. As a conserved pathway regulating cell growth and metabolism in response to growth factors and nutrients, the roles of mTOR signaling in follicular development have been extensively studied in recent years. However, its functions during follicle formation remain unknown. In this study, the expression of p-rpS6 (phospho-ribosomal protei

Incidence of ovarian cyst formation in women taking ethynodiol diacetate, 1 mg, with ethinyl estradiol, 35 micrograms.

A total of 7,759 women were treated with ethynodiol diacetate, 1 mg, with ethinyl estradiol, 35 micrograms (EDA 1 mg with EE 35 micrograms) in a field study involving 983 obstetrician-gynecologists evaluating the incidence of ovarian cyst formation. Six thousand three hundred eighty-two patients were evaluable; 1,377 could not be evaluated because of failure to meet inclusion criteria or inconsistent or incomplete data collection. Cysts were detected in 80 patients at the time of the final visit. Follow-up questionnaires were received on 61% of patients and confirmed the presence of 12 newly f

Tacrolimus-induced Epidermoid Cysts in the Renal Transplant Patient.

Epidermal cysts are common benign cystic lesions that occur mostly sporadically. Common sites involved are arms, face, and trunk. The cyst may progress slowly and remain for years. These cysts arise as a result of the plugging of the follicular orifice. Etiology has largely remained unknown although local trauma, ultraviolet rays, and human papilloma virus (HPV) have been implicated in a few cases. Calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) especially cyclosporine has been discredited for cutaneous side effects such as hirsutism and gingival hyperplasia. Epidermoid cysts have been also associated with pati

Merkel cell tumor in a trichilemmal cyst: collision or association?

An 86-year-old white male presented with an erythematous, painless, slowly growing, and firm left thigh nodule. Histologic examination revealed a dermal proliferation of monomorphous cells arranged in trabeculae, nests, and sheets with an infiltrative growth pattern. The cells had a high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio, finely granular nuclear chromatin, and nuclear molding. Numerous mitotic figures, apoptotic cells, and individual cell necrosis were present; lymphovascular invasion was identified. The tumor was attached, demonstrating pagetoid intraepithelial migration, to a follicular cyst lined b

Corpus luteum in ectopic ovarian tissue miming tubal pregnancy.

We report an extraordinarily rare case of a pregnant patient with history of multiple ovarian cyst surgery. The corpus luteum developed on an ectopic ovarian tissue, miming an tubal pregnancy. One week later after the diagnostic laparoscopy an intrauterine pregnancy was visualised. Therefore, ectopic ovarian tissue with normal follicular activity may appear after multiple ovarian surgery.

[Antenatal diagnosis of ovarian cyst: perinatal management].

More than 85% of prenatal ovarian cysts have a follicular or luteal origin. Their natural history is a spontaneous involution. However, adnexal torsion resulting in the loss of the ovary can occur at any time of the evolution. Pre and postnatal changes in the sonographic aspects allow to choose the appropriate therapeutical indications: conservative approach, laparoscopic surgery, or percutaneous aspiration. Prenatal aspiration must be avoided. The last prenatal sonographic examination should be performed as close as possible from the end of the gestation, and the first postnatal echography wi

Histological classification of canine ovarian cyst types with reference to medical history.

Ovaries of 21 bitches presented with gynecopathies were surgically removed and histologically examined. Standard histological, as well as immunohistochemical, classification of 193 cystic structures resulted in the classification of 72 cysts of subsurface epithelial structures (SES), 61 follicular cysts (FCs), 38 cystic rete ovarii (CRO), 13 lutein cysts (LCs), and 9 non-classifiable cysts (NCCs). In addition to the histological classification, results were interpreted according to subject medical history, clinical examination outcome, and macroscopic observations during ovariohysterectomy. A rare case of in situ follicular B-cell neoplasm involving sebaceous lymphadenoma.

In situ follicular neoplasia (ISFN) is characterized by a monoclonal proliferation of BCL2-positive B cells harboring the translocation t(14;18)(q32;q21). These cells are confined to follicle centers and are usually identified incidentally, with a very low risk of progression to follicular lymphoma. Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare, benign salivary gland tumor, most commonly arising in the parotid gland, and is histologically defined by solid epithelial nests and cysts with sebaceous differentiation in a hyperplastic lymphoid stroma. We report an unusual case of ISFN arising within a sebaceous

Eyelid basal cell carcinoma developing in an epidermoid cyst: a previously unreported event.

A 72-year-old woman presented with a 3 × 2 × 1-mm right lower eyelid micronodular, whitish solid lesion at the nasal eyelid margin that had caused madarosis. Local excision led to the microscopic discovery of 2 epidermoid cysts, one of which harbored a basal cell carcinoma arising from its orthokeratinizing squamous cell lining. Poral openings indicated that the cysts represented follicular infundibular ectasias. BER-EP4-positive immunostaining confirmed the basal cell nature of the neoplasm. This is the first example in the eyelid of an epidermoid cyst displaying malignant transformation. No
