Food cue reactivity in food addiction: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: While neuroimaging studies have revealed that reward dysfunction may similarly contribute to obesity and addiction, no prior studies have examined neural responses in individuals who meet the "clinical" food addiction phenotype. METHODS: Women (n = 44) with overweight and obesity, nearly half of whom (n = 20) met criteria for moderate-to-severe Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) food addiction, participated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging cue reactivity task. Participants viewed images of highly processed foods, minimally processed foods, and household objects whi

Food safety/food security aspects related to the environmental release of pharmaceuticals.

The environmental presence of pharmaceuticals in top soil and in water where extensive animal farming occurs may represent an involuntary source of residues in food that might affect both food safety and food security. We modelled the presence of residues in animal matrices from the inventoried environmental concentration of selected drugs in surface waters (range: 0.1-10μgL(-1)) and agriculture soils (range: 1-100μgkg(-1) dry weight), accounting for animal production parameters (i.e., forages, water intake and milk and egg production) and drug pharmacokinetics. The results indicate that the c

EAACI food allergy and anaphylaxis guidelines: diagnosis and management of food allergy.

Food allergy can result in considerable morbidity, impact negatively on quality of life, and prove costly in terms of medical care. These guidelines have been prepared by the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology's (EAACI) Guidelines for Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Group, building on previous EAACI position papers on adverse reaction to foods and three recent systematic reviews on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of food allergy, and provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of food allergy. While the primary audience is allergists, this

Clinical evaluation of food allergy and food intolerance dietary treatment in children.

Dietary treatment with Humana SL (33) or Prosobee (42) was administered to 75 children at the age from 1 month to 3 years with cow's milk allergy (36), coeliac disease (9), secondary enteropathy (30). The treatment time ranged from a few days (in case of intolerance symptoms) to 12 months. In 13 children intolerance symptoms or unwillingness to take food was observed: in 4 (12%) after the application of Humana SL and in 9 (21%) after Prosobee. Lack of improvement after Prosobee treatment was observed in 4 (10%) children, and in 4 (12%) children with Humana SL. The partial or total relief of sy

Development and Management of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder and Food Neophobia in Pediatric Patients with Food Allergy: A Comprehensive Review.

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and food neophobia present significant challenges in pediatric healthcare, particularly among children with food allergies (FAs). These eating disorders, characterized by the persistent avoidance or restriction of food, can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies and psychosocial impairments. The presence of FAs further complicates these eating behaviors, as the fear of allergic reactions exacerbates avoidance and restrictive patterns. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on ARFID and food neophobia, focusing on their definit

Assessing food security through cooking and food literacy among students enrolled in a basic food science lab at Appalachian State University.

A dual relationship between food insecurity and inadequate food literacy among college students may be attributed to limited food literacy, availability and ability to prepare healthful foods. Experiences that increase food literacy can improve diet quality and reduce food insecurity. Research was conducted through a food literacy-based curriculum developed using Social Cognitive Theory and Experiential Learning Theory. Food literacy outcomes and food security level were measured pre- and post-term through a Qualtrics-based survey. Analyses included Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and McNemar test.

Assessment of the emotional responses produced by exposure to real food, virtual food and photographs of food in patients affected by eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Many researchers and clinicians have proposed using virtual reality (VR) in adjunct to in vivo exposure therapy to provide an innovative form of exposure to patients suffering from different psychological disorders. The rationale behind the 'virtual approach' is that real and virtual exposures elicit a comparable emotional reaction in subjects, even if, to date, there are no experimental data that directly compare these two conditions. To test whether virtual stimuli are as effective as real stimuli, and more effective than photographs in the anxiety induction process, we tested th

Prolonged Multi-food Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) With Yolk Specificity and Reproducible Cytokine Responses During Serial Oral Food Challenges.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy of infancy, with cow's milk as a classic trigger and egg yolk increasingly recognized in Japan. We report a term female who developed chronic FPIES to cow's milk in early infancy, followed by acute FPIES to heated egg yolk at six months. Perinatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was documented by positive CMV IgM and persistent urine CMV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positivity. Symptoms improved with an extensively hydrolyzed formula, yet serial hospital-based oral food challenges (OFCs)

Food handling practice and associated factors among food handlers in public food establishments of Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Food handlers are individuals who are involved in food preparation, storage or service of food in a food facility. Unless they keep their personal hygiene, they are highly responsible for contaminating food or transmitting microbes to consumers. Thus, the main aim of this review was to pool the level of good food handling practice among food handlers working in public food establishments in Ethiopia. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal tool. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Google Scholar and Advanced Google were searched

Drug or food anaphylaxis?

A 9-month-old infant with a personal history of atopic dermatitis and no family history of atopy presented to the outpatient allergy clinic for evaluation of suspected food and drug allergy. The mother breastfed the infant from birth and had introduced only fruits and vegetables into his diet. After the first dose of Ferplex® (iron protein succinylate), the infant had an immediate moderate systemic reaction that required emergency care and treatment with intramuscular epinephrine. The drug was indicated for the treatment of acute anemia. Skin prick test and specific IgE were done, confirming s

[Physiopathology of food allergies].

Food allergy is an adverse reaction to certain foods that have demonstrated "immunological mechanisms"; therefore, this term covers both food allergies mediated or not by immunoglobulin E (IgE). The common pathophysiological mechanism among forms of allergy to foods mediated or not by IgE is found in the failure of clinical and immunological tolerance towards that food. The induction and maintenance of immunological tolerance depends on the active generation of regulatory T cells specific for food antigens. This process is influenced by genetic factors (FOXP3 genes) and epigenetic factors cond

Protists protecting food tolerance.

Celiac disease (CeD) is an immune disorder characterized by gluten intolerance that can be unleashed by enteric viral infections in mice. However, Sanchez-Medina et al. recently identified a murine commensal protist, Tritrichomonas arnold, that protects against reovirus-induced intolerance to dietary protein by counteracting virus-induced epithelial stress and proinflammatory dendritic cell (DC) activation.

Mercury in Our Food.

The methylation of mercuric mercury (Hg2+) in the aquatic sediments produces methylmercury (CH3Hg+), which is biomagnified along the food chain. The ingestion of piscivorous fish or aquatic mammals by pregnant women is of concern because it can cause long-lasting neurobehavioral deficits in their offspring.

Allergy to food additives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an update of the studies concerning the diagnosis and management of food additives allergy. RECENT FINDINGS: Additives improve specific characteristics of food products, but they may induce allergic even life-threatening reactions. Physical examination and medical history are basic to assess specific in-vivo and in-vitro tests. The only treatment for allergic patients consists in avoiding the food containing culprit additives. High-risk patients should be able to recognize severe reactions and self-manage them. SUMMARY: The prevalence of adverse reactions to foo

Food-Induced Red Eye.

PURPOSE: This article addresses the etiology of red eyes and a novel case of food-induced red eye. CASE REPORT: An 82-year-old white male patient reported 50 years of episodes of severe unilateral bulbar injection in either eye following ingestion of certain foods. Thinned scleras in this particular patient made the injection in his eyes more observable. Photodocumentation of this reaction after he ingested these foods is shown. CONCLUSIONS: It is hypothesized that this is a new explanation for an intermittent, unilateral, self-limited red eye-a food-induced red eye.

[Food allergy in adulthood].

Food allergies can newly arise in adulthood or persist following a food allergy occurring in childhood. The prevalence of primary food allergy is basically higher in children than in adults; however, in the routine practice food allergies in adulthood appear to be increasing and after all a prevalence in Germany of 3.7 % has been published. The clinical spectrum of manifestations of food allergies in adulthood is broad. Allergy symptoms of the immediate type can be observed as well as symptoms occurring after a delay, such as indigestion, triggering of hematogenous contact eczema or flares of

Food allergies: the basics.

IgE-associated food allergy affects approximately 3% of the population and has severe effects on the daily life of patients-manifestations occur not only in the gastrointestinal tract but also affect other organ systems. Birth cohort studies have shown that allergic sensitization to food allergens develops early in childhood. Mechanisms of pathogenesis include cross-linking of mast cell- and basophil-bound IgE and immediate release of inflammatory mediators, as well as late-phase and chronic allergic inflammation, resulting from T-cell, basophil, and eosinophil activation. Researchers have beg
