Masticatory function after comprehensive dental treatment in children with severe early childhood caries.

BACKGROUND: Parents are frequently concerned that their child's mastication may be compromised after comprehensive dental treatment. AIM: To evaluate changes in masticatory function and food preferences after dental treatment in children with early childhood caries. DESIGN: This prospective study assessed masticatory function with the (1) mixing ability test using duo-coloured chewing gum and (2) the number of chews/g and time taken to eat six food items before and 3 months after dental treatment. A dental examination and a food preference questionnaire were also completed. RESULTS: Twenty-

A modelling framework for translating discrete choice experiment results into cost-effectiveness estimates: an application to designing tailored and scalable HIV and contraceptive services for adolescents in Gauteng, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: South African youth and adolescents face a high burden of (Sexually Transmitted Infections) STIs, HIV and unintended pregnancies, but uptake of services remains low. To address this, tailored and scalable interventions are urgently needed. We developed a framework to fill the gap and translate the impact of facility-level attributes into a cost-effectiveness analysis for increasing HIV/contraceptive service uptake in adolescents using a discrete choice experiment (DCE). METHODS: We used a DCE (n = 805) conducted in Gauteng, South Africa, which found that staff attitude, confiden

AI-generated food stimuli match real counterparts in perceived healthiness and calorie content but not in realism or willingness to eat.

Visual food stimuli are widely used in food perception and evaluation research, but are often limited by a lack of control of confounding variables. AI-generated food images may be a viable but yet understudied alternative. In a within-subject online experiment, 87 participants rated 60 pairs of AI-generated and pre-validated real visual food stimuli, balanced for calorie content and flavor, on four 100ms visual analogue scales (realism, willingness to eat, calorie content, healthiness). AI-generated visual food stimuli were rated as significantly less realistic and elicited lower willingness

Parental beverage choices to inform policy on sugar-sweetened beverages: a discrete choice experiment.

This study addresses growing concerns regarding childhood obesity and cardiovascular diseases by exploring the effects of possible policy measures on the intention to choose sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in Mongolia, a low-income country. Focusing on parents' preferences for purchasing SSBs, we employed a stated preference choice experiment to analyse how various product attributes, including price, labelling, sugar content and store placement, affect parents' purchase decisions. Price increases were the most effective intervention, with larger increases leading to a substantial reduction i

The ability of captive spider monkeys, Ateles geoffroyi, to visually discriminate between different sizes of food and of non-edible objects.

Field studies suggest that the size of potential food items plays an important role in the food selection behavior of nonhuman primates. However, there is only limited knowledge about how good primates are at visually discriminating between the size of three-dimensional objects of the same kind and shape. We therefore conducted two experiments on ten adult spider monkeys: a two-choice test based on spontaneous preferences with differently-sized pieces of food of the same kind and shape, and a two-choice test based on an operant conditioning procedure in which the animals were trained to choose

Wellness in the Schools: A Lunch Intervention Increases Fruit and Vegetable Consumption.

Wellness in the Schools (WITS) is a national non-profit organization partnering with public schools to provide healthy, scratch cooked, less processed meals (called an Alternative Menu), and active recess. This study examined the effects of WITS programming on school lunch consumption, including fruit and vegetable intake, in second and third grade students in New York City public schools serving a high proportion of students from low-income households. The intervention was evaluated with a quasi-experimental, controlled design with 14 elementary schools (7 that had initiated WITS programming

The effects of selective amygdala, orbital frontal cortex or hippocampal formation lesions on reward assessment in nonhuman primates.

We examined the effects of bilateral amygdaloid, hippocampal or orbital frontal cortex lesions on reward assessment in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). In Experiment 1, basic preferences for foods and inedible nonfoods were measured pre- and postsurgery. None of the lesions produced changes in animals' preferences for palatable foods or raw meat relative to presurgery, although amygdaloid or hippocampal lesions yielded increased preference for inedible nonfoods postsurgery. When the reinforcement value of each animal's highest-preferred food was decreased by selective satiation, only animals w

Ghrelin signaling is not essential for sugar or fat conditioned flavor preferences in mice.

The oral and post-oral actions of sugar and fat stimulate intake and condition flavor preferences in rodents through a process referred to as appetition. Ghrelin is implicated in food reward processing, and this study investigated its involvement in nutrient conditioning in mice. In Exp. 1 ghrelin receptor-null (GHSR-null) and C57BL/6 wildtype (WT) mice learned to prefer a flavor (CS+) mixed into 8% glucose over another flavor (CS-) mixed into a "sweeter" but non-nutritive 0.1% sucralose+saccharin (S+S) solution. In Exp. 2 treating WT mice with a ghrelin receptor antagonist [(D-Lys3)-GHRP-6] d

Meeting Service Members Where They Are: Supporting Vegetable Consumption Through Convenient Meal Kits.

Vegetable intake among military Service Members (SMs) is well below public health guidelines, with only 12.9% meeting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs). Low vegetable consumption negatively impacts diet quality as measured by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), and poses risks to health and performance. Given the high physical and mental demands of military life, improving diet quality, including through increased vegetable intake, is crucial for optimizing health and readiness. Providing meal kits may help improve vegetable intake by reducing access-related barriers for SMs living or wo

What the Eye Sees, the Mind Rejects: Implicit Visual Processing of Food Images in Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the role of implicit visual processing in reinforcing maladaptive eating behaviours in Anorexia Nervosa-restricting subtype (AN-R), focussing on how high- and low-calorie food stimuli are processed at different stages. METHOD: Thirty-two AN-R females and 36 healthy controls participated. Using a combination of novel paradigms in the field, the study employed: Breaking Continuous Flash Suppression (bCFS) for unconscious detection, Binocular Rivalry (BR) for perceptual dominance, and the Food Preference Approach-Avoidance Task (FP-AAT) for subconscious food

Relationships between executive functions and food rejection dispositions in young children.

This study examined the associations between the two main kinds of food rejection, neophobia and pickiness, and executive functions in young children. Caregivers of children (n = 240) aged 3-6 years completed measures of their children's food neophobia and pickiness. A battery of tests measured children's executive functions and world knowledge. Children with higher levels of neophobia and pickiness had lower cognitive flexibility scores than children with lower levels of food rejection. Moreover, the association between food neophobia and cognitive flexibility was stronger than the associatio

Aversive textures and their role in food rejection.

Texture is a prominent feature in foods and consequently can be the reason a food is accepted or rejected. However, other sensory attributes, such as flavor/taste, aroma, sound, and appearance may also lead to the rejection of food and motivations other than unpleasantness exist in unacceptance. To date, these motivations for food rejection have been studied in isolation and their relationships with psychological factors have not been tested. This study measured reasons people reject a food and probed into the specifics of texture rejection. A large U.S. sample (N = 473) was asked to rate thei

Seasonality and synchrony of reproduction in three species of nectarivorous Philippines bats.

BACKGROUND: Differences among species and among years in reproductive seasonality (the tendency for clusters of events to fall at approximately the same point in each year) and synchrony (amount of clustering of events within a year) have been intensively studied in bats, but are difficult to assess. Here, we use randomization methods with circular statistics to test for synchrony and seasonality of reproduction in three species of nectarivorous megachiropteran bats on Negros Island in the central Philippines. RESULTS: In Rousettus amplexicaudatus, estimated dates of birth were both highly sy

Profiling taste-motivated segments.

Early adopters of unfamiliar, but nutritious foods can do so because of a combination of taste-motivations and health-motivations. Yet because taste can provide an enduring motivation for dietary change, profiling the taste-motivated segment of a particular food might prove useful in identifying and stimulating adoption among similar predisposed segments. This manuscript describes a basic qualitative and quantitative procedure--in the context of soy consumption--that can be used to begin profiling taste-motivated segments of a particular food. A survey of 606 North Americans indicates that whe

Core, secondary, and peripheral foods in the diets of Hispanic, Navajo, and Jemez Indian children.

Our results show the importance of a number of regional foods and suggest some differences in the dietary patterns of three ethnic groups in the same region. Dietitians and nutritionists should be aware of the rich ethnic diversity of dietary patterns and use this knowledge in nutrition counseling, program planning, and nutrition education.

Elevated stress hormone diminishes the strength of female preferences for acoustic signals in the green treefrog.

Mate selection can be stressful; time spent searching for mates can increase predation risk and/or decrease food consumption, resulting in elevated stress hormone levels. Both high predation risk and low food availability are often associated with increased variation in mate choice by females, but it is not clear whether stress hormone levels contribute to such variation in female behavior. We examined how the stress hormone corticosterone (CORT) affects female preferences for acoustic signals in the green treefrog, Hyla cinerea. Specifically, we assessed whether CORT administration affects fe

Diet counseling in a multicultural society.

Successful diet counseling is dependent on culturally sensitive communication strategies. Health care practitioners can improve cross-cultured counseling through a four-step process. First, they must become familiar with their own cultural heritages. Second, they must become acquainted with the cultural background of each client. Third, through an in-depth cross-cultural interview, they must establish the client's cultural background, food habit adaptations made in the United States, and personal preferences. Fourth, they must modify diets based on unbiased analysis of the dietary data. The be

Emerging Technologies for Investigating Food Consumer Behavior: A Systematic Review.

The evolving nature of food preferences and consumption patterns highlights the need for ongoing research in food consumer behavior. Most existing research relies on traditional methods, like questionnaires, which are often costly, time-consuming, and prone to bias. The increasing integration of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Social Media Analytics (SMA), and Big Data, into the food sector presents novel opportunities to overcome these limitations. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for System

Delivering sustainable food: exploring college students' willingness to pay for carbon labels in China via a choice experiment.

The rapid expansion of online food delivery has intensified concerns about packaging waste and carbon emissions, making sustainable consumption an increasingly important component of the sector's low-carbon transition. Whether environmental information disclosure can shift consumers' choices toward lower-carbon alternatives is therefore an important issue for improving the sustainability of digital food-delivery platforms. This study estimates the preferences of university students, who constitute one of the most intensive user groups of online food-delivery services, and willingness to pay (W
