Background: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a myocardial disorder characterized by structural and functional abnormalities, in particular left or biventricular chamber dilatation and systolic dysfunction, occurring without evidence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular disease, or congenital heart defects. It is a significant cause of sudden cardiac death, particularly in young individuals, often remaining undiagnosed until autopsy. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted following PRISMA guidelines to revisit the main postmortem findings (gross, microscopic,

Microhaplotypes (MHs) consisting of multiple SNPs and indels on short stretches of DNA are new and interesting loci for forensic genetic investigations. In this study, we analysed 74 previously defined MHs in two of the populations that our laboratory provides with forensic genetic services, Danes and Greenlanders. In addition to the 229 SNPs that originally made up the 74 MHs, 66 SNPs and 3 indels were identified in the two populations, and 45 of these variants were included in new definitions of the MHs, whereas 24 SNPs were considered rare and of little value for case work. The average effe

In the present study, validation data for 24 Y-STR loci from the Microreader™ 24Y Direct ID System was presented. Eight Y-STR loci have PCR product sizes with less than 220 bp in this multiplex amplification system, which can better detect degraded DNA samples from a crime scene. Developmental validation studies were conducted following the SWGDAM guidelines and consisted of PCR-based studies, sensitivity testing, species specificity, stability studies, accuracy and reproducibility evaluation, mixture studies, and case-type samples. The genetic diversities and forensic parameters of the 24 Y-S

BACKGROUND: Although Rwanda has increasingly adopted DNA evidence in criminal investigations, paternity testing, and civil applications, comprehensive population-specific autosomal STR reference data remain limited. The first forensic STR study in Rwanda analyzed a relatively small cohort of unrelated individuals using a limited marker panel, and provided an initial allele frequency dataset with restricted population coverage. The present study provides nationally distributed allele frequency data and forensic efficiency parameters for 23 autosomal STR loci.

Dental development is one of the most widely utilized and accurate methods available for estimating age in subadult skeletal remains. The timing of tooth growth and development is regulated by genetics and less affected by external factors, allowing reliable estimates of chronological age. Traditional methodology focuses on comparing tooth developmental scores to corresponding age charts. Using the Moorrees, Fanning, and Hunt (MFH) developmental scores, Shackelford and colleagues embed the dental development method in a statistical framework based on transition analysis. They generated numeric

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a natural death of cardiac origin, accounting for an estimated 6-9 million deaths worldwide each year and representing a major public health challenge. Despite its clinical and forensic relevance, the molecular investigation of SCD remains limited. Peripheral blood or fresh tissue, the preferred specimens for post-mortem genetic testing, are not always available, and DNA extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues is often suboptimal for conventional genetic analyses. This review evaluates the potential of archived FFPE ca

The variable development of the zygoma, dictating its shape and size variations among ancestral groups, has important clinical implications and valuable anthropological and evolutionary inferences. The purpose of the study was to review the literature regarding the variations in the zygoma with ancestry. Ancestral variation in the zygoma reflects genetic variations because of genetic drift as well as natural selection and epigenetic changes to adapt to diet and climate variations with possible intensification by isolation. Prominence of the zygoma, zygomaxillary tuberosity, and malar tubercle

Poppies are beneficial plants with a variety of applications, including medicinal, edible, ornamental, and industrial purposes. Some Papaver species are forensically significant plants because they contain opium, a narcotic substance. Internationally trafficked species of illegal poppies are being identified by DNA barcoding employing multiple markers in response to their forensic value. However, effective markers for precise species identification of legal and illegal poppies are still under discussion, with research on illegal poppies focusing on Papaver somniferum L., and species identifica

There is a need to standardise, within a coordinated Swiss framework, the practical aspects of genetic testing and genetic counselling on possibly inherited cardiovascular disorders in relatives of a sudden cardiac death (SCD) victim. Because of the major advances in genetic investigation techniques and recent publication of international guidelines in the field of cardiology, genetics and pathology, we consider it important to summarise the current evidence and propose an optimal approach to post-mortem genetic investigation for SCD victims and their families in Switzerland. In this article,

The French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat (1743-1793) was assassinated in 1793 in his bathtub, where he was trying to find relief from the debilitating skin disease he was suffering from. At the time of his death, Marat was annotating newspapers, which got stained with his blood and were subsequently preserved by his sister. We extracted and sequenced DNA from the blood stain and also from another section of the newspaper, which we used for comparison. Results from the human DNA sequence analyses were compatible with a heterogeneous ancestry of Marat, with his mother being of French origin and

This study compares two collection techniques - swabbing and adhesive tape - for obtaining touch DNA samples suitable for direct typing with the VeriFiler® Express Kit. Touch DNA, defined as genetic material deposited on surfaces following human contact, plays an increasingly important role in forensic investigations by enabling the analysis of trace biological evidence for potential suspect identification. Samples were collected from two controlled surfaces: sterile glass and a mobile phone. A total of 100 samples were obtained using both methods and analyzed for DNA quantity and quality, spe

The use of biological traces recovered from touched or handled items increased with the advance of the forensic analysis system. Thus, DNA profiles obtained from touch DNA became a useful tool in forensic investigation. However, a chimeric person with more than one chromosomal population can be challenging for a forensic analyst. We investigated the genetic profile in blood, buccal swab, and skin swabs from twenty-four recipients aged 21-63 years who underwent a matched sibling allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with no sign of skin graft versus host disease. Autosomal short ta

Forensic DNA laboratories worldwide have begun using multiplexed STR systems to decrease analysis time and increase sample throughput. The loci used in these systems are basically "nonsense" regions of human DNA. However, due to the chromosome on which some of these loci are located, various genetic abnormalities can sometimes be detected. This paper will show one such abnormality--Klinefelter's Syndrome--and the process used to show the possibility of this defect in two undiagnosed males using peak height ratios at the Amelogenin locus, and X-Y STRs.

The present case study concerns a case of predation of 4 individuals of captive pink flamingo in Emilia Romagna Region, Northeastern Italy. The pink flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is a species included in the Red List of Threatened Species established by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) which lists species in danger of extinction. During the Winter of 2013, 4 flamingos (2 in the Comacchio area, and 2 from Argenta and Codigoro oases - Ferrara province) were found dead some of them headless, with their bodies severely bitten. At first, a fox (Vulpes vulpes) was suspect

Surviving a gunshot wound to the head is a rare event, particularly in the past when medical treatment was much less advanced than it is today. Moreover, the finding of such a case as an identified specimen within a museum collection is even more uncommon. This led us to report on this unique case in this paper as it poses a challenge to forensic anthropology and provides a unique educational oppourtunity. The skull from the Collection at the Cranium Museum in the Department of Morphology and Genetic at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) dates back to 1946. For trauma registration t

With unique genetic characteristics and inherent stability, circular multicopy mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is critical for maternal lineage tracing from degraded and trace samples, making it a sustained focus in forensic science for identifying degraded samples when nuclear DNA analysis fails, as well as in evolutionary anthropology. However, accurate and reliable mtDNA sequencing from such samples remains technically challenging. By employing rolling circle amplification (RCA) to achieve linear amplification, the DNB sequencing platform effectively avoids error accumulation, yielding sequencing

Fetal autopsy remains essential for determining the cause of intrauterine death and for supporting clinical, genetic, and forensic evaluations. However, in cases of advanced maceration, autolysis severely compromises tissue integrity, often preventing adequate identification of anatomical structures and limiting the diagnostic and medico-legal value of traditional autopsy. To address these challenges, we developed and applied an innovative underwater dissection technique designed to improve visualization, separation, and recovery of fragile organs in macerated fetuses. Seventeen cases of intra

Age-at-death estimation is critical in forensic investigations, particularly for skeletal and dental remains. Accurate age estimation is essential for constructing biological profiles in forensic investigations. DNA methylation, particularly in age-related genes such as FHL2, has emerged as a promising epigenetic marker for this purpose. While previous studies have applied methylation assays to the entire tooth, these methods often result in the destruction of the dental structures. In this study, we assessed whether FHL2 methylation levels measured using methylation-sensitive high-resolution
