The Fourth Industrial Revolution has accelerated the integration of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) into workplaces, creating opportunities to merge technology with real-world practice. In forensic pathology, workforce shortages and the dangers of investigating hazardous death scenes highlight the need for innovation. This study explored the use of a mobile, agile quadruped robot to investigate hanging death scenes, assessing its ability to navigate, capture evidence, and reduce human risk. The research focused on low-risk hanging death scenes as a starting point, with the aim of lat

OBJECTIVE: The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) is a widely used measure of emotion dysregulation across clinical contexts. However, its psychometric properties and clinical utility have not been thoroughly examined in forensic populations. This study evaluated the original 36-item DERS and two short forms, the DERS-16 and the DERS-8, in two independent forensic samples from two different countries: a forensic psychiatric inpatient sample (N = 88) and a prison sample (N = 389).
METHODS: Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess factor structure. Reliability was evaluated

Formalin's widespread use in tissue fixation for forensic and diagnostic pathology is increasingly challenged by its known carcinogenicity and detrimental effects on biomolecular integrity. This technical note evaluates Glyoxal Acid-Free (GAF) fixative as a superior, non-toxic alternative. We highlight formalin's limitations in terms of occupational hazards and compromised molecular analysis (e.g., DNA degradation for NGS and epitope masking for IHC). Subsequently, we present the advantages of GAF, including excellent morphological preservation, enhanced immunohistochemical performance, and "i

A case of commission forensic medical examination in the St. Petersburg Bureau of Forensic Science of a civil case due to an unfavorable treatment outcome is presented. Patient T., 45 years old; due to erroneous histological verification of oncological pathology, she had both breasts removed and received antitumor treatment. It has been shown that defects in histological diagnosis can lead to errors by clinicians and become the subject of lawsuits by patients accusing healthcare professionals of adverse treatment outcomes. It is emphasized that the current legislation lacks medical criteria an

Post-mortem imaging has become an important adjunct or alternative to autopsy in perinatal pathology and forensic medicine, particularly when conventional autopsy is limited or declined. However, high-field MRI, currently the post-mortem imaging gold standard for fetuses, is not always available in many forensic settings. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a 0.31 Tesla low-field MRI scanner, which offers advantages in affordability, installation, infrastructural requirements such as reduced power, cooling, and shielding demands, and lower safety constraints associated with its field

Shored exit wounds are produced when the skin at the point of the bullet exit is supported or buttressed by some object or surface, causing an abraded ring around the shored exit wound. This work looks to add critical understanding of shored wound processes on a range of surface types, expanding on the currently limited literature that focuses only on soft shoring materials. This large empirical study was conducted to develop a deeper understanding of shored exit wounds for a range of common surface types available in contemporary urban environments. To facilitate this, two ammunition types (5

OBJECTIVES: To observe and analyze the performance of forensic science in the cases of suxa- methonium chloride poisoning, and to improve the identification of suxamethonium chloride poisoning.
METHODS: Fifty-four cases of suxamethonium chloride poisoning were collected. The rules of determination of suxamethonium chloride poisoning were observed by the retrospective analysis of pathological and toxicological changes as well as case features.
RESULTS: The pathological features of suxamethonium chloride poisoning were similar to the general changes of sudden death, which mainly included acute

Mast cell tryptase can be an indicator of type I hypersensitivity reaction and thus may serve as a surrogate marker of anaphylaxis. A 34-year-old white male patient presented with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus. Shortly after administration of cefazolin for dialysis, he developed pruritus and shortness of breath. He expired an hour later. Autopsy excluded anatomic causes of death. There was an elevated postmortem mast cell tryptase level, 29.2 ng/mL. For mast cell tryptase level to be useful, the patient must survive long enough after exposure to an allergen for mast cells to releas

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an inducible stress-response protein, exerts anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic effects. However, its significance in forensic diagnosis of acute ischemic heart diseases (AIHD) such as myocardial infarction (MI) is still unknown. We examined the immunohistochemical expression of HO-1 in the heart samples to discuss their forensic significance to determine acute cardiac ischemia. The heart samples were obtained from 23 AIHD cases and 33 non-AIHD cases as controls. HO-1 positive signals in cardiomyocyte nuclear were detected in 78.2% of AIHD cases, however, that were detect

As forensic scientists and physicians, forensic pathologists are duty-bound to perform their examinations with integrity and professionalism. The practice of medicine requires knowledge regarding the history and presentation of the patient. In forensic pathology, the history includes scene and other investigative information, and the decedent's medical and social history. Such information is important for the correct certification of the cause and manner of death. Herein, the authors present a case originally thought by police and death investigators to represent a sexual-assault-related homic

Bilateral symmetric bone nodules were observed in the anterolateral first ribs of an infant with shaking injuries at autopsy. The location prompted diagnostic considerations of healing fractures versus anomalous articulations with pseudarthroses. The forensic pathologist worked with forensic anthropologists and pediatric radiologists to evaluate autopsy findings and compare premortem and postmortem X-rays. Gross examination of the bones by the pathologist and anthropologists confirmed bilateral, callus-like bone nodules in first-rib locations associated with pseudarthroses. Histologic examinat

The authors review clinical and conceptual errors that contribute to false attributions of malingering in forensic evaluations. Unlike the mental disorders, malingering is not defined by a set of (relatively) enduring symptoms or traits; rather, it is an intentional, externally motivated, and context-specific form of behavior. Despite this general knowledge, attributions of malingering are often made by using assessment tools that may detect feigning but cannot be relied upon to determine incentive and volition or consciousness (defining characteristics of malingering). In addition, forensic e

Starvation-related deaths are not uncommon worldwide particularly in economically underdeveloped regions. However, the forensic characterization of such cases remains limited due to underdeveloped local forensic systems. Here we presented a case of a neonate who died of starvation after being abandoned in the wild for 14 days, and 9 additional reported cases were identified by a systematic search of PubMed and MEDLINE databases. Based on these findings, the key forensic characteristics were summarized. Significant reductions in body or organ weight were consistently documented across all ten c

Cluster munitions remain a significant source of blast and fragmentation injuries in modern armed conflicts owing to their wide-area effects, high fragment density, and the persistence of unexploded submunitions. These weapons generate complex injury patterns involving blast overpressure, high-velocity fragment penetration, thermal effects, and multi-system trauma, posing substantial clinical, forensic, and humanitarian challenges. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on injury mechanisms associated with cluster munitions, with particular emphasis on fragment-induced penetrating

The need for molecular analyses has become increasingly common in the forensic sciences, particularly in forensic pathology, to better shape the causes of death. This approach is called the "molecular autopsy," where conventional medico-legal findings are often enhanced with specific molecular tests to provide reliable clinical and forensic diagnoses. In this context, FFPE (Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded) tissue samples collected during forensic autopsies are the only available specimens in retrospective studies for molecular DNA and/or RNA analyses. It is well known that pre-analytical para

Human remains are frequently recovered from fluvial (lotic) water environments. Rivers, streams, canals and other flowing water bodies pose distinct challenges in forensic practice, particularly due to their current. Compared to other aquatic contexts, fluviatile taphonomy is underrepresented in the forensic literature and the last comprehensive summary was written over a decade ago. Therefore, a systematic review was performed to collect and summarise the current knowledge in forensics about fluvial taphonomy, including decomposition of remains, transport characteristics, search, postmortem s

Domestic accidents account for a significant proportion of accidental deaths. We describe, for the first time, fatal mechanical asphyxiation caused by an electric desk in a 26-year-old man. Forensic autopsy, including toxicological analysis, was performed. Blood and urine samples were analyzed for drugs, narcotics, and alcohol. From an autopsy perspective, we primarily observed pale, shape-defined skin imprints accentuated by cervicofacial congestion and livor mortis. No significant pathologic conditions were found, particularly cardiac conditions. Toxicologically, the absence of identifiable

Morbid obesity is associated with a wide range of metabolic, infective, and organic disorders related to adipose tissue overload. While careful documentation of internal autopsy findings is usual, skin manifestations may be overlooked. Skin manifestations are quite diverse and include striae distensae, skin tags, plantar hyperkeratosis, acanthosis nigricans, the sequelae of hyperandrogenism, lymphedema, panniculus morbidus, chronic venous insufficiency, stasis dermatitis, leg ulceration, intertrigo, cellulitis, pressure ulcers and 'buried penis'. Obesity has also been associated with hidradeni
