Treating Vertebral Compression Fractures: Establishing the Appropriate Diagnosis, Preoperative Considerations, Treatment Techniques, Postoperative Follow-Up and General Guidelines for the Treatment of Patients With Symptomatic Vertebral Compression Fractures.

Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) result from either trauma or a pathologic process that weakens the bone by conditions such as osteoporosis or tumor. The incidence of VCFs has been rising over the last few decades in accordance with the aging population. These fractures can result in severe pain, physical limitation and disability, as well as increased morbidity and mortality. Patients with VCFs are optimally treated by accurate and early diagnosis and treatment. An effective method to treat these fractures is percutaneous vertebral augmentation, which is a set of minimally invasive proc

A risk factor associated with subsequent new vertebral compression fracture after conservative therapy for patients with vertebral compression fracture: a retrospective observational study.

UNLABELLED: Lumbar BMD and functional recovery in the acute period were independently strongly associated with subsequent new VCF after hospital conservative therapy for patients with new fragility VCFs. Functional recovery was related with age, pain intensity during first month after hospitalization, VCF past history and multiple new VCFs. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the factors independently associated with the subsequent vertebral compression fracture (VCF) after hospital conservative therapy in patients with new fragility VCFs and parameters related with functional recovery in

Does fracture pattern predict death with lateral compression type 1 pelvic fractures?

BACKGROUND: Our goal was to analyze whether radiographic fracture pattern correlates with mortality of patients with lateral compression type 1 (LC1) fractures. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-controlled study at a Level I trauma center. Radiographs and outcome data were obtained for 52 patients with LC1 fractures who died and 63 who lived. LC1 fractures were classified by Denis zone of sacral injury and presence of fracture displacement. Our main outcome measurement was mortality during index hospital admission. RESULTS: No difference was observed in frequency of higher energy De

Predictors of adjacent level fractures following kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fractures of all etiologies: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adjacent-level fracture (ALF) is frequently observed following vertebral augmentation, although recent evidence suggests it is largely a disease-related event rather than a consequence of the procedure itself. Existing data derive almost exclusively from osteoporotic fractures treated with vertebroplasty. We sought to identify predictors of ALF after kyphoplasty for vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) of all etiologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-center cohort study included adults undergoing first-time kyphoplasty for VCFs between 2015 and 20

Risk of complications after kyphoplasty in patients with pathologic vertebral compression fractures.

PURPOSE: Vertebral compression fractures (VCF) account for a significant health burden worldwide. They are caused by osteoporosis or pathologic lesions resulting from primary or secondary malignant processes. These fractures are often treated with kyphoplasty, an effective minimally-invasive procedure intended to return structure to vertebrae. However, the risk of complications following kyphoplasty in pathologic fractures compared to typical fractures has not been quantitatively assessed. METHODS: Data was collected from a large national database. After propensity matching, cohorts of 6,027

Intramedullary Compression Screw Fixation of Proximal Phalanx Fractures: An Updated Systematic Review.

Proximal phalangeal fractures occur at a higher frequency than other phalanges, but the optimal management of these injuries remains subject to debate. The use of intramedullary screw (IMS) fixation has gained popularity over the last decade and aims to minimize extensor apparatus violation whilst providing adequate construct stability to allow early motion and rehabilitation. This systematic review aims to provide an updated analysis of patient- and clinician-reported outcome measures following fracture fixation using IMS in the proximal phalanx. A literature search was conducted using PubMed

Tripod-Fix device for the treatment of painful osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.

Current vertebral augmentation procedures (VAPs) often involve devices associated with bone cement leakage. Tripod-Fix is designed to mitigate the risk of bone cement leakage by expanding in three dimensions to fit a narrower vertebral space. This study enrolled 12 patients diagnosed with osteoprorotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) for 12 month follow up. The primary outcomes assessed were changes in the Visual Analog Score (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) before and after treatment. Our results demonstrated significant pain relief with VAS decreasing from 8.58 ± 1.83 to 2.75

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to develop and authenticated a deep learning model based on X-ray images to accurately diagnose fresh thoracolumbar vertebral compression fractures. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: In clinical practice, diagnosing fresh vertebral compression fractures often requires MRI. However, due to the scarcity of MRI resources and the high time and economic costs involved, some patients may not receive timely diagnosis and treatment. Using a deep learning model combined with X-rays for diagnostic assistance could potentially serve as an alterna

Results of Subtrochanteric Femoral Fractures Fixation by Proximal Femoral Locking Compression Plate.

The treatments of subtrochanteric femoral fractures are a challenge. It accounts about 10.0% to 34.0% of all hip fractures with a high complication rate. This area consists of mostly cortical bone with high stress generation thus heal slowly. The fracture is too proximal to adequately control with implants for femoral shaft and too distal to control with implants for intertrochanteric fractures. The intrinsic insecurity of this fracture and forces of the muscles with comminuted medial calcar is giving the fracture a tendency to varus crumple. Extramedullary implants are associated with higher
