Use of hydroxyapatite bone cement to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage through the frontal sinus: technical report.

OBJECTIVE: To test the efficacy of a simple technique of frontal sinus obliteration during low frontal craniotomy using hydroxyapatite cement instead of more traditional methods, such as pericranial flaps, free muscle or adipose grafts, lumbar drainage, or fibrin glue. METHODS: Eight patients undergoing low frontal craniotomy for intradural surgery had the frontal sinus obliterated by careful removal of mucosa followed by filling of the sinus with hydroxyapatite bone cement. No other adjuncts for preventing cerebrospinal fluid leakage through the sinus were used. RESULTS: At an average follo

Beyond the Frontal Bones: Revisiting the Extent and Efficacy of "Bifrontal" Decompressive Craniectomy in Malignant Brain Swelling.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The term bifrontal decompressive craniectomy (DC) is traditionally used to describe bilateral frontal bone removal for diffuse traumatic brain swelling. However, considerable heterogeneity exists in the actual extent of bone removal and dural opening among surgeons, potentially influencing decompressive efficacy. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the true anatomic extent and radiological effectiveness of bifrontal DC using a reproducible morphometric index. METHODS: In this retrospective observational cohort study, we reviewed patients with

Congenital Ossification Defects of the Frontal Bone: Description of a Novel Clinical Entity and the Management of Four Patients.

Embryologic development of the frontoorbital region is complex and is affected by a series of pathologies. These primarily represent failures of fusion at the interface between the frontal bones and the skull base or between the frontal bones themselves, or frontal bone defects in association with atypical craniofacial clefts or cutis aplasia. Isolated ossification defects in the frontal bones themselves are rare, with only 1 case having been previously reported. In that report, the defect was effectively managed with an alloplastic cranioplasty. However, long term results were not presented.

Maxillary and Frontal Bone Simultaneously Involved in Brown Tumor due to Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in a Hemodialysis Patient.

Brown tumors are rare focal giant cell lesions of the bone caused by primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). Brown tumor was reported in 1891; it presents as the end-stage findings of HPT. Common involvements are skull and pelvic girdle. We describe a case of 46-year-old female hemodialysis patient, with secondary HPT in whom multiple masses lesions of the left maxillary sinus and frontal bone were radiologically suspected to be brown tumor. This unusual manifestation of secondary HPT can be expected to occur with increased longevity of patients with renal failure and illustrates the need to includ

[A comparison between the upper and lower jaws of the alveolar bone changes due to the extraction of frontal teeth].

The present study was designed to compare the process of structural changes which appeared in the alveolar bone and cortical bone of the frontal maxilla and mandible after extraction of the incisors. Twelve adult dogs whose upper and lower incisors on the same side were extracted at the same time were kept for 29-181 days. The dogs were injected continuously with tetracycline during the first half of the experimental period and with calcein during the latter half. Labio-palatal and labio-lingual longitudinal ground sections were first micro-radiographed and, then, examined by fluorescence micr

Enhanced Activation of Canonical Wnt Signaling Confers Mesoderm-Derived Parietal Bone with Similar Osteogenic and Skeletal Healing Capacity to Neural Crest-Derived Frontal Bone.

Bone formation and skeletal repair are dynamic processes involving a fine-tuned balance between osteoblast proliferation and differentiation orchestrated by multiple signaling pathways. Canonical Wnt (cWnt) signaling is known to playing a key role in these processes. In the current study, using a transgenic mouse model with targeted disruption of axin2, a negative regulator of cWnt signaling, we investigated the impact of enhanced activation of cWnt signaling on the osteogenic capacity and skeletal repair. Specifically, we looked at two calvarial bones of different embryonic tissue origin: the

Surgical management of frontal bone and naso-orbito-ethmoidal fractures: a 7-year multi-center retrospective review.

OBJECTIVE: Frontal and naso-orbito-ethmoidal (NOE) fractures are rare but important injuries due to their anatomical complexity and proximity to vital structures. This study aims to describe the patient factors, procedural factors, and postoperative outcomes in the surgical management of these fractures. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of patients aged 18 years or older who were surgically treated for these fractures at two Australian tertiary hospitals (2014-2020). Patient factors (demographics, mechanism of injury, fracture pattern, concomitant injuries); procedural factors (operation ti

A Novel Method of Frontal Bone Reconstruction Using Patient-Specific Implants and Costochondral Grafts: A Case Report.

The frontal bone is the vital component of the human skull and forms a part of the anterior skull vault, base, and roof of the orbits. Frontal bone defects may arise secondary to various causes like trauma, congenital defects including craniofacial clefts, tumors in the frontal bone requiring surgical intervention, and infections, like osteomyelitis, that cause osteonecrosis of the frontal bone. Reconstruction of frontal bone has been explored in the literature, and various materials are available for rehabilitation, like auto/allografts, and alloplastic materials, including bone cement, titan

Defining a critical period in calvarial development for Hedgehog pathway antagonist-induced frontal bone dysplasia in mice.

The Hedgehog (Hh) signalling pathway is essential for cellular proliferation and differentiation during embryonic development. Gain and loss of function of Hh signalling are known to result in an array of craniofacial malformations. To determine the critical period for Hh pathway antagonist-induced frontal bone hypoplasia, we examined patterns of dysmorphology caused by Hh signalling inhibition. Pregnant mice received a single oral administration of Hh signalling inhibitor GDC-0449 at 100 mg•kg-1 or 150 mg•kg-1 body weight at preselected time points between embryonic days (E)8.5 and 12.5. Frontal skull osteoblastoma with aneurysmal bone cyst-like changes associated with trauma during pregnancy: a case report.

We report the case of a large osteoblastoma arising in the frontal bone of a 20-year-old female. The lesion was first noted after a fall, and grew steadily in size following further head injury during pregnancy. Initial plain radiography demonstrated an area of radiolucency, with subsequent cross-sectional imaging revealing the extent of the lesion. Following successful surgical resection, histological features were suggestive of an aggressive osteoblastoma with aneurysmal bone cyst-like changes. We consider the influence of pregnancy and trauma on osteoblastoma behavior.

TGFbeta-mediated FGF signaling is crucial for regulating cranial neural crest cell proliferation during frontal bone development.

The murine frontal bone derives entirely from the cranial neural crest (CNC) and consists of the calvarial (lateral) aspect that covers the frontal lobe of brain and the orbital aspect that forms the roof of bony orbit. TGFbeta and FGF signaling have important regulatory roles in postnatal calvarial development. Our previous study has demonstrated that conditional inactivation of Tgfbr2 in the neural crest results in severe defects in calvarial development, although the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which TGFbeta signaling regulates the fate of CNC cells during frontal bone development

[Long-term outcome after obliteration of the cat frontal sinus with ionomer bone substitute. II: Histomorphometric measurements].

BACKGROUND: Stenosis or occlusion of the nasofrontal duct with subsequent recurrent frontal sinusitis or mucocele formation may require osteoplastic surgery in combination with frontal sinus obliteration. METHODS: To study its suitability as an implant material in sinuses, granular ionomeric cement was applied for frontal sinus obliteration in 15 cats. The frontal sinus specimens were processed for histological studies after 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months, respectively. To obtain quantitative data from the histological sections, areas of osteoid, connective tissue, and implanted ionomeric cement

Pure endoscopic endonasal removal of unusual anterior skull base aneursymal bone cyst extending to the frontal lobe.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign, nonneoplastic, hemorrhagic, and expansile osseous lesions that present most frequently at age younger than 20 years. Aneurysmal bone cysts typically involve long bones of extremities, thorax, pelvis, or spinal column. Skull base involvement is very rare. The authors report the case of a 23-year-old woman with ABC of the skull base and total removal of lesion with pure endoscopic endonasal approach. The patient had presented with nasal obstruction for 6 months. Physical and neurological examination findings were normal except for bilateral anosmia. Crani
