Frontliners narratives: qualitative insights into EMDR group therapy during COVID-19.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic raised unprecedented challenges for frontline healthcare workers and emergency volunteers, leading to significant psychological distress. To address these issues, EMDR-IGTP (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing-Integrative Group Treatment Protocol) was proposed as a trauma-focused group intervention. Although its efficacy is widely documented, little is known, from a qualitative perspective, about the experiences of frontliners who underwent this treatment during the pandemic. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the experiences of frontline prof

Stigma and labelling of immigrant personal support workers during COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario: Implications for policy.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on the livelihoods of people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in Canada. In this study, we focus on immigrant essential workers, who played pivotal roles in sustaining Canada's socio-economic and healthcare sectors during this crisis. Drawing data from twenty-five in-depth interviews with immigrant personal support workers, we found that immigrant personal support workers experience a complex and compounding type of stigma, traceable to their location at race, gender, class, and ethno-national lines. Using intersectionality and stigma as guidi

Cross-sector collaboration in transitional care of people experiencing homelessness: insights from an exploratory network analysis.

Interprofessional care coordinators informally collaborate across sectors to facilitate care of patients with multimorbidity and social complexity, such as in the case of ill-housed persons at hospital discharge. The complexity of homeless patients demands research on cross-sector collaborative interventions like medical respite, a cross-sector transitional care model. Relational Coordination (RC) and exploratory social network analysis were used to assess the cross-sector collaboration of a medical respite network (N = 15 organizations), by comparing administrative (n = 20) and frontline care

Science, pseudoscience, and the frontline practitioner: the vaccination/autism debate.

This article demonstrates how misinformation concerning autism and vaccinations was created and suggests that social workers may be perfectly poised to challenge pseudoscience interpretations. Utilizing social network theory, this article illustrates how erroneous research, mass media, and public opinion led to a decreased use of vaccinations in the United States and a seven-fold increase in measles outbreaks. It traces the dissemination of spurious research results and demonstrates how information was transmitted via a system of social network nodes and community ties. This article encourages

Treating the SARS-CoV-2-positive patient with cancer: A proposal for a pragmatic and transparent ethical process.

The treatment of patients with cancer who test positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) poses unique challenges. In this commentary, the authors describe the ethical rationale and implementation details for the creation of a novel, multidisciplinary treatment prioritization committee, including physicians, frontline staff, an ethicist, and an infectious disease expert. Organizational obligations to health care workers also are discussed. The treatment prioritization committee sets a threshold of acceptable harm to patients from decreased cancer control that is

Public Discourses of Ebola Contagion and Courtesy Stigma: The Real Risk to International Health Care Workers Returning Home From the West Africa Ebola Outbreak?

This article explores the homecoming experiences of international health care workers who responded to the 2014 to 2016 West African Ebola outbreak. Interviews with 11 frontline international medical staff were undertaken and data thematically analyzed. It was found that international health care workers faced an unforeseen risk of stigmatization upon their return home, related to others' fears of their infectious status. Media representations of the disease appear to have played a significant role in heightening societal perceptions of the risks associated with the returning health care worke

'Outbreak distress': Characterising moral distress among international healthcare workers responding to mpox.

In May 2022, a global outbreak of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) was declared an international public health emergency. During this time, healthcare workers scrambled to respond to the outbreak amidst a lack of resources, knowledge gaps and pressures related to COVID-19. This period posed a risk of heightened moral distress, defined as distress arising from a situation in which a healthcare worker knows the right thing to do but is externally constrained from doing so. An international survey of healthcare workers was developed to understand their experiences of responding to mpox, includi

Trace of the tracer: Techno-solutionism, surveillance and the ambivalent experiences of digital health in Türkiye's COVID-19 response.

This study examines how digital health technologies were implemented in pandemic response, based on interviews and focus groups with frontline health workers in Türkiye. While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital tools as essential solutions for crisis management, the findings reveal a more ambivalent reality.Digital systems improved coordination, replaced paper-based chaotic workflows, and enabled real-time data sharing. However, their effectiveness was constrained by infrastructural shortcomings, uneven digital skills, and misalignment with field conditions. Digitalisati
