Use of cytological preparations in the frozen section diagnosis of central nervous system neoplasia.

Because cytologic preparations capture the fine cellular detail that frozen sections often obscure, touch and smear preparations are valuable adjuncts to intraoperative histologic diagnoses.

The role and limitations of frozen section and needle aspiration biopsy in breast cancer diagnosis.

Frozen section of breast biopsy specimens, and cytologic smears of breast mass aspirates, are both acceptable methods in the initial evaluation of palpable breast masses. The latter method is an outpatient procedure without significant morbidity. Interpretation may be made immediately; however, the diagnostic information obtained is limited to "malignant" or "negative." Frozen section may be applied to open biopsy or needle core biopsy specimens. In either case, the false-negative rate is less than that experienced with needle aspiration, and additional information is obtained regarding the hi

Chief cell intracytoplasmic fat used to evaluate parathyroid disease by frozen section.

The chief cells of parathyroid adenomas were found to contain less intracytoplasmic fat than normal parathyroid glands and/or the adjacent rims of nonadenomatous parathyroid tissue. The amount of sudanophilic material in the chief cells was relatively uniform for each individual adenoma, but varied between patients. In half of the patients with parathyroid adenomas, Sudan-positive granules were generally absent from the adenomatous cells, whereas in the other half the granules were easily identifiable. The chief cells of secondary hyperplasia showed a less uniform pattern in each gland. In som

Atmospheric-Pressure Infrared Laser-Ablation Plasma-Postionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging of Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) and Fresh-Frozen Tissue Sections with No Sample Preparation.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) encompasses a powerful suit of techniques which provide spatially resolved atomic and molecular information from almost any sample type. MSI is now widely used in preclinical research to provide insight into metabolic phenotypes of disease. Typically, fresh-frozen tissue preparations are considered optimal for biological MSI and other traditional preservation methods such as formalin fixation, alone or with paraffin embedding (FFPE), are considered less optimal or even incompatible. Due to the prevalence of FFPE tissue storage, particularly for rare and therefor

Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome in a Phenotypic Female: The Role of Frozen Section in Assisting Diagnosis.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is a rare disorder of sexual development. Patients present clinically with a varied phenotypic presentation depending on the residual androgen activity, which can be complete, partial, or mild. Karyotyping is helpful in the diagnosis of AIS. A suspicion of AIS should be considered in any female child presenting with inguinal swellings or labial edema. This report presents a case of this rare disorder in an 18-year-old unmarried girl who failed to achieve menarche. Tanner staging was performed, revealing a Tanner stage 4 for breast development and stage 2 f

Intraoperative Diagnosis: Imprint Cytology and Frozen Section in Ovarian Tumor, Averting Additional Surgery.

A granulosa cell tumor (GCT) is a type of ovarian cancer that constitutes approximately 10% of all ovarian malignancies. In this case, a female patient with hypothyroidism and a history of irregular periods was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) after a radiological examination, which subsequently recommended surgery. Frozen section analysis and imprint cytology assisted in the intraoperative diagnosis of the tumor. These diagnostic tools helped adopt a minimally invasive surgery where only the affected ovary was removed, thus avoiding an extra surgical procedure. It is usually d

Should we rely on frozen section during the reimplantation stage of revision knee arthroplasty?

OBJECTIVE: To compare Frozen Section (FS) results during the reimplantation stage of revision knee arthroplasty, in patients without clinical signs of infection but with preoperative inconclusive serum inflammatory markers. METHODS: Sections were revisited the day after surgery. Intraoperative FS (iFS) was accepted as positive when the presence of >5 polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNLs) in 5 separate high-power fields was determined according to the consensus criteria of the International Consensus on Musculoskeletal Infection. The clinical outcomes, cultures and diagnostic values of iFS and

Interobserver Variability and Challenges in Intraoperative Frozen Section Evaluation of Pancreatic Margins in Pancreatectomy Specimens.

OBJECTIVE: Frozen-section evaluation of the pancreatic margin is challenging. We aimed to determine interobserver variability among gastrointestinal pathologists for the assessment of frozen sections of pancreatic margins with marked chronic pancreatitis and to determine the challenging histological features in discrepant cases. METHODS: We identified 45 patients who underwent pancreas resection for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and showed marked chronic pancreatitis at pancreatic margin. Deidentified first levels of frozen-sections of the pancreatic margins from all cases were independent

Keratin Granulomas in the Peritoneum on Frozen Section: A Case Report with Multiple Suspects and the Search for the Culprit.

Keratin granulomas in the peritoneum are a rare finding with multiple etiologies and can be especially challenging for both the pathologist and the surgeon when these lesions are grossly visible. We report a case of a unique frozen section diagnostic scenario of evaluation of keratin granulomas in the peritoneum of a 47-year-old woman in the setting of multiple potential culprits: endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinoma following fertility sparing treatment, and a concurrent dermoid cyst. We discuss the various etiologies of keratin granulomas in the peritoneum, mechanism of their formation, d

Frozen-Permanent Section Discrepancy Rate in Oral Cavity and Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Frozen section evaluation of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is critical for margin status and subsequent patient therapy. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the rate of frozen-permanent section discrepancies in blocks with two frozen section levels compared to ≥ three levels in oral cavity and oropharyngeal SCCs. A search of the cases with both intraoperative frozen sections and corresponding permanent sections for SCCs in the oral cavity and oropharynx was performed. Frozen sections and permanent slides were compared. The nature of discrepancies was assigned to one of the

Surgical management of suspected gallbladder cancer: The role of intraoperative frozen section for diagnostic confirmation.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative diagnosis for suspected gallbladder cancers is challenging, with a risk of overtreating benign disease, for example, xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis, with radical cholecystectomies. We retrospectively evaluated the surgeon's intraoperative assessment alone, and with the addition of intraoperative frozen sections, for suspected gallbladder cancers from a tertiary hepatobiliary multidisciplinary team (MDT). METHODS: MDT patients with complex gallbladder disease were included. Collated data included demographics, MDT discussion, operative details, and patient outcomes.

Preoperative MRI and intraoperative frozen section diagnosis of myometrial invasion in patients with endometrial cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The rate of lymph node metastasis is extremely low in patients with low-risk endometrial cancer; lymphadenectomy may be unnecessary for these patients under an accurate preoperative diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of myometrial invasion (MI) on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and intraoperative frozen sections (FSs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Endometrial cancer was diagnosed in a total of 378 patients by preoperative endometrial curettage, preoperative magnetic resonance imaging MRI, and intraoperative FSs; the 378 patients underw

[CONTROVERSIES REGARDING THE ACCURACY AND LIMITATIONS OF FROZEN SECTION IN THYROID PATHOLOGY: AN EVIDENCE-BASED ASSESSMENT].

Palpable thyroid nodules are present clinically in 4-7% of the population and their prevalence increases to 50%-67% when using high-resolution neck ultrasonography. By contrast, thyroid carcinoma (TC) represents only 5-20% of these nodules, which underlines the need for an appropriate approach to avoid unnecessary surgery. Frozen section (PS) has been used for more than 40 years in thyroid surgery to establish the diagnosis of malignancy. However, a controversy persists regarding the accuracy of FS and its place in thyroid pathology has changed with the emergence of fine-needle aspiration (FNA

Intra-operative frozen section results reliably predict final pathology in endometrial cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Typically, complete surgical staging is necessary for patients with high-risk endometrial cancer. However, patients with low-risk disease may be able to avoid lymphadenectomy and its associated morbidity. We sought to evaluate the agreement rates between the intra-operative frozen sections (FSs) and the final paraffin sections (PSs) at our institution, and to determine if this was a reliable method for guiding our intra-operative decision-making with regard to the necessity of lymphadenectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 116 patients with a pre-operative diagnosis of endometrioid adeno

Value of frozen section examination in diagnosis and treatment of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

BACKGROUND: Invasive cancer of the cervix is considered a preventable disease because it has a long pre-invasive state, cervical cytology screening programs are currently available, and treatment of pre-invasive lesions is effective. We tested the accuracy of frozen section examination (FSE) of cone specimens to identify the endocervical margin and rule out invasion in patients with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). METHODS: For 320 consecutive patients with a preoperative biopsy result of CIN stage 2/3, cold-knife conization (CKC) was performed followed by FSE. The results
