Changes of mate occur in Schistosoma mansoni.

Male and female schistosomes are generally assumed to form stable monogamous pairs for the whole span of their long existence in the mammalian host. Recent evidence from mixed infections has shown that Schistosoma mansoni males can displace S. intercalatum males from their homologous partners, but no information exists about the existence of similar phenomena within a single schistosome species. Here, we determine whether male S. mansoni can displace males of the same species from pre-formed pairs in vivo. The availability of clear-cut genetic markers of drug resistance in schistosomes was exp

Major histocompatibility complex genes in systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, and polymyositis.

Current concepts about the roles of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and complement genes in predisposing to connective tissue diseases are reviewed. Precise localization of disease conferring alleles and epitopes is confounded by two major phenomena: (1) clinical and serologic heterogeneity of the diseases and associations of several different HLA alleles with different and often overlapping autoantibody responses; and (2) linkage disequilibrium of many potentially relevant gene loci located on the disease-associated HLA haplotypes. Using molecular genetic tools in serologically homogeneous pati

Phenocopies in families with essential tremor and restless legs syndrome challenge Mendelian laws. Epigenetics might provide answers.

Essential Tremor (ET) and Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) are both highly heritable neurological disorders. The frequent occurrence of multi-incident families suggests the existence of highly penetrant alleles. However, linkage analyses and positional cloning approaches performed within the last 10 years essentially failed to identify responsible mutations. Several loci were found, but their relevance was questioned given the occurrence of suspected phenocopies in many of those families. Remarkably, in some ET and RLS families with an apparent autosomal dominant mode of transmission, the proporti

Genetics, epigenetics and transgenerational transmission of obesity in children.

Sedentary lifestyle and consumption of high-calorie foods have caused a relentless increase of overweight and obesity prevalence at all ages. Its presently epidemic proportion is disquieting due to the tight relationship of obesity with metabolic syndrome and several other comorbidities which do call for urgent workarounds. The usual ineffectiveness of present therapies and failure of prevention campaigns triggered overtime a number of research studies which have unveiled some relevant aspects of obesity genetic and epigenetic inheritable profiles. These findings are revealing extremely precio

Functional evolution of jumping in frogs: Interspecific differences in take-off and landing.

Ancestral frogs underwent anatomical shifts including elongation of the hindlimbs and pelvis and reduction of the tail and vertebral column that heralded the transition to jumping as a primary mode of locomotion. Jumping has been hypothesized to have evolved in a step-wise fashion with basal frogs taking-off with synchronous hindlimb extension and crash-landing on their bodies, and then their limbs move forward. Subsequently, frogs began to recycle the forelimbs forward earlier in the jump to control landing. Frogs with forelimb landing radiated into many forms, locomotor modes, habitats, and

Biomechanical trade-offs and the evolutionary dynamics of weapon morphology: phylogenetic comparative evidence from scorpion pincers.

Pincer-like appendages are multifunctional structures that have evolved repeatedly within Arthropoda. In scorpions, they appear in the form of pedipalp chelae, providing an excellent example of form-function integration in evolutionary biology. Performance traits such as pinch force, closing speed, and mechanical resistance can be reliably predicted from chela morphology and directly influence fitness through a wide range of interactions. Despite this, the evolutionary trajectories underlying the morphological diversity of the scorpion chelae remain poorly understood. Phylogenetic comparative

Autoimmune thyroiditis and comorbid autoimmune diseases: global research landscape and future directions.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) patients frequently present with coexisting autoimmune diseases (ADs), adding complexity to management and outcomes. Although this field has been extensively explored, there is a paucity of bibliometric analyses capable of clarifying worldwide research trajectories, identifying major hotspots, and outlining prospective directions. METHODS: This study extracted data from PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus, analyzing 2,201 publications published between 1980 and 2024. Data visualization was performed using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the bib

Perceiving cancer-risks and heredity-likelihood in genetic-counseling: how counselees recall and interpret BRCA 1/2-test results.

Previous studies on the counsellees' perception of DNA test results did not clarify whether counsellees were asked about their recollections or interpretations, and focused only on patients' own risks and not on the likelihood that cancer is heritable in the family. We tested differences and correlations of four perception aspects: recollections and interpretations of both cancer risks and heredity likelihood. In a retrospective study, women tested for BRCA1/2 on average, 5 years ago, completed questionnaires about their perception. Participants had received an unclassified variant (n = 76), u

Molecular genetics of aging in the fly: is this the end of the beginning?

How we age and what we can do about it have been uppermost in human thought since antiquity. The many false starts have frustrated experimentalists and theoretical arguments pronouncing the inevitability of the process have created a nihilistic climate among scientists and the public. The identification of single gene alterations that substantially extend life span in nematodes and flies however, have begun to reinvigorate the field. Drosophila's long history of contributions to aging research, rich storehouse of genetic information, and powerful molecular techniques make it an excellent syste

Speciation and repeated origins of hypertrophied lips in parallel adaptive radiations of cyprinid fish from East Africa.

The evolution of convergent phenotypes is one of the most interesting phenomena of repeated adaptive radiations. Here, we examined the repeated patterns of thick-lipped or "rubberlip" phenotype of cyprinid fish of the genus Labeobarbus discovered in riverine environments of the Ethiopian Highlands, East Africa. To test the adaptive value of thickened lips, identify the ecological niche of the thick-lipped ecomorphs, and test whether these ecomorphs are the products of adaptive divergence, we studied six sympatric pairs of ecomorphs with hypertrophied lips and the normal lip structure from diff

[D-loop sequence variation of mitochondrial DNA in captive Chinese alligator].

Chinese alligator, Alligator sinensis, is a critically endangered endemic species under legislative protection in China. Result of recent investigations revealed that number of the alligators was continuously declining in the past 50 years and less than 150 individuals were surviving in the wild until 2000 years. In order to prevent the extinguishing of this species, two breeding farms were set up in early 1980s at Xuanzhou county, Anhui Province and Changxing County, Zhejiang Province respectively. After twenty years of breeding efforts, the number of captive individuals has been brought up t

Of criminals and cancer: The importance of social bonds and innate morality on cellular societies.

The current dogma in cancer biology contends that cancer is an identity problem: mutations in a cell's DNA cause it to "go rogue" and proliferate out of control. However, this largely ignores the role of cell-cell interaction and fails to explain phenomena such as cancer reversion, the existence of cancers without mutations, and foreign-body carcinogenesis. In this proof-of-concept paper, we draw on criminology to propose that cancer may alternatively be conceptualized as a relational problem: Although a cell's genetics is essential, the influence of its interaction with other cells is equally

Contingent stimulus delivery assay for zebrafish reveals a role for CCSER1 in alcohol preference.

Alcohol use disorders are complex, multifactorial phenomena with a large footprint within the global burden of diseases. Here, we report the development of an accessible, two-choice self-administration zebrafish assay (SAZA) to study the neurobiology of addiction. Using this assay, we first demonstrated that, although zebrafish avoid higher concentrations of alcohol, they are attracted to low concentrations. Pre-exposure to alcohol did not change this relative preference, but acute exposure to an alcohol deterrent approved for human use decreased alcohol self-administration. A pigment mutant u

Editorial: Linking Emotional and Behavioral Dysregulation in Adolescents to Regulatory Cortex.

A major goal of psychiatric neuroscience is to identify brain regions and circuits that underlie clinical phenomena to gain a more precise understanding of their nature and treatment.1 These are early days in this effort, especially for pediatric mental health, but already there is evidence that brain changes may herald psychosis in youths at genetic risk for schizophrenia2 or response to therapy in youths with anxiety.3 Elucidating these brain-behavior relationships requires one to identify a clinically meaningful phenotype and associate it with specific brain regions or circuits that plausib

Butyrophilins: an important new element of resistance.

Butyrophilins belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily are new immune system regulators because they are present on lymphocytes, dendritic cells, monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils and eosinophils, and they exert a stimulatory and (or) inhibitory effect on them. The role of butyrophilins is associated and results from their similarity to the regulatory B7 protein family involved in the modulation of immune phenomena. Butyrophilins are glycoproteins built of two extracellular immunoglobulin domains, stabilized with disulfide bonds: constant IgC, and variable IgV and a transmembrane region.

Neither dichotomies nor dualisms; simply genesis.

Our starting point is an article by Uchoa Angela Branco published in 2009 in Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (vol. 43, pp. 350-355) and titled "Why Dichotomies can be Misleading while Dualities Fit the Analysis of Complex Phenomena". She criticizes the dualist uses of the distinction between subject and object, or between subjectivist and objectivist perspectives. However we subscribe to the criticism, we argue that some kind of distinction between objectual and subjectual realities is neccesary. Our argument is grounded on the classic constructivist Psychology, especially th

[Advances in the research on immunopathogenesis of myasthenia gravis].

Microscopic structure and immunologic function of the thymus gland are outlined, with an emphasis on its role in the process of T and B lymphocytes maturation. Other types of thymic cells are also described, including epithelial and myoid cells that presumably have a central role in initiation of an autoimmunologic process leading to myasthenic symptoms development. A detailed account is presented of issues concerning pathophysiology of myasthenia, the structure of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AchR) at neuromuscular junctions, and mechanisms underlying its destruction by autoantibodies. Las21 participates in extracellular/cell surface phenomena in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Las21 (Yj1062W) is a member of the major facilitator super family, possessing multimembrane spanning domains. The LAS21 gene was identified as a responsible gene for a Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutan which shows sensitivity to a local anestheticum, tetracaine. The null las21 mutant (las21 delta) is viable but shows temperature sensitive growth. We found, in addition to this phenotype, that the las21 delta strain shows a number of defects; mating deficiency, calcofluor resistance, and formation of Zymolyase sensitive spores. Temperature sensitive growth of the las21 delta mutant was found to be
