Prevalence and predictors of condom use among people who inject drugs in Georgia.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior placing them at high risk of acquiring HIV and other STIs. This study aims to assess the prevalence and predictors of inconsistent condom use with casual and/or paid sexual partners among PWID in Georgia. METHODS: Integrated Bio-Behavioral Surveillance Survey was conducted among PWID in seven major cities of Georgia. Study design was cross-sectional with respondent-driven sampling (RDS) methodology. Data collection was carried out through individual face-to-face interviews. In this paper we analysed

Two New Eimerians from American Alligator, Alligator mississippiensis (Crocodilia: Alligatoridae), from Georgia, USA.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the coccidian parasites of the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis (Daudin). To date, only two species of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 have been previously reported from A. mississippiensis. Here, we report from mensural and morphometric data on two new species of Eimeria from A. mississippiensis from Georgia, USA. METHODS: Fresh feces were collected in June 2023 from a single captive juvenile male A. mississippiensis. Multiple samples were placed in individual zip-lock bags and aqueous potassium dichromate was added. They were examined for sporulated oocy

Factors associated with condom use among HIV-positive women living in Atlanta, Georgia.

OBJECTIVES: Consistent condom use is essential to reducing heterosexual transmission of HIV. African Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States despite comprising a small percentage of the population. Our objectives were to evaluate factors associated with self-reported condom use in a cohort of predominantly African American women receiving HIV care in Atlanta, Georgia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of reproductive knowledge, attitudes, and practices among adult, sexually-active, HIV-positive women attending the Grady Infectious Disease Clinic in Atlanta, Georgi

Socioeconomic Status and Non-Fatal Adult Injuries in Selected Atlanta (Georgia USA) Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Injury mortality data for adults in the United States and other countries consistently show higher mortality for those with lower socioeconomic status (SES). Data are sparse regarding the role of SES among adult, non-fatal US injuries. The current study estimated non-fatal injury risk by household income using hospital emergency department (ED) visits. METHODS: A total of 1,308,892 ED visits at 10 Atlanta (Georgia USA) hospitals from 2001-2004 (347,866 injuries) were studied. The SES was based on US census-block group income, with subjects assigned to census blocks based on report

Prevalence, diversity, and host associations of Bartonella strains in bats from Georgia (Caucasus).

Bartonella infections were investigated in seven species of bats from four regions of the Republic of Georgia. Of the 236 bats that were captured, 212 (90%) specimens were tested for Bartonella infection. Colonies identified as Bartonella were isolated from 105 (49.5%) of 212 bats Phylogenetic analysis based on sequence variation of the gltA gene differentiated 22 unique Bartonella genogroups. Genetic distances between these diverse genogroups were at the level of those observed between different Bartonella species described previously. Twenty-one reference strains from 19 representative genog

Changing livestock vaccination policy alters the epidemiology of human anthrax, Georgia, 2000-2013.

Anthrax is a widely spread zoonotic disease found on nearly every continent. To control the disease in humans and animals, annual livestock vaccination is recommended. However, in 2007, the country of Georgia ended its policy of compulsory annual livestock anthrax vaccination. Our objective was to assess how the epidemiology of human anthrax has evolved from 2000-2013 in Georgia, in the wake of this cessation. We used passive surveillance data on epidemiological surveys of human anthrax case patients. Risk factors and rates of self-reported sources of infection were compared, before and after

Ebola active monitoring system for travelers returning from West Africa—Georgia, 2014-2015.

The Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic in West Africa has so far produced approximately 25,000 cases, more than 40 times the number in any previously documented Ebola outbreak. Because of the risk for imported disease from infected travelers, in October 2014 CDC recommended that all travelers to the United States from Ebola-affected countries receive enhanced entry screening and postarrival active monitoring for Ebola signs or symptoms until 21 days after their departure from an Ebola-affected country. The state of Georgia began its active monitoring program on October 25, 2014. The Georgia

Limited spillover to humans from West Nile Virus viremic birds in Atlanta, Georgia.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen that impacts the health of its passerine bird hosts as well as incidentally infected humans in the United States. Intensive enzootic activity among the hosts and vectors does not always lead to human outbreaks, as is the situation throughout much of the southeastern United States. In Georgia, substantial yearly evidence of WNV in the mosquito vectors and avian hosts since 2001 has only led to 324 human cases. Although virus has been consistently isolated from mosquitoes trapped in Atlanta, GA, little is known about viral activity among the pas

Women's sexual and reproductive health in post-socialist Georgia: does internal displacement matter?

CONTEXT: Persons displaced by armed conflicts, natural disasters or other events are at increased risk for health problems. The Republic of Georgia has a substantial population of internally displaced women who may face elevated risks of STIs and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). METHODS: The 1999 Georgia Reproductive Health Survey was used to examine the prevalence of self-reported STI and PID diagnoses among displaced and nondisplaced sexually experienced women. Multivariate analyses were conducted to determine whether displacement is associated with STI and PID risk, and whether the behav

Prevalence of asthma and allergies among adolescents in Georgia: comparison between two surveys.

Since healthcare costs for asthma and allergies are a heavy burden for a society, it is a general interest to know whether this temporal trend is still ongoing or whether a plateau has been reached over the last decade. We therefore aimed to follow the trends in the prevalence of asthma, allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, and atopic eczema in Georgian schoolchildren of 13-14 years of age between 1996 and 2003. Surveys were carried out according to the ISAAC methodology in Tbilisi and Kutaisi centres. The mean prevalence increased steadily for current wheezing from 3.6% to 5.6% (p=0.0001) and curre

Connective tissue disease in southeastern Georgia: a case-control study of etiologic factors.

The authors conducted a population-based case-control study of connective tissue disease in a four-county area in southeastern Georgia. Interviews with 44 cases and 88 controls were conducted in September and October of 1986. The association with a family history of these disorders was reconfirmed, and a positive association with the use of hair dyes was found. A negative association was found with a family history of diabetes mellitus.

Factors associated with influenza vaccine uptake among healthcare workers in Georgia, 2021-2024.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are prioritised to receive influenza vaccine annually in Georgia. We aimed to identify factors associated with influenza vaccine uptake among Georgian HCWs. METHODS: We used self-reported influenza vaccination data for three influenza seasons (2021-2024) and 2023 survey data on attitudes towards influenza from a prospective cohort of HCWs in six hospitals in Georgia. HCWs who received influenza vaccine in at least one season were compared with those who were not vaccinated in any season. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were

Prenatal exposure to prescribed smoke PM2.5 and low birth weight in Georgia, USA.

BACKGROUND: Prescribed burning is a major but poorly characterized source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the southeastern United States. While wildfire-related smoke PM2.5 has been linked to adverse birth outcomes, evidence on prescribed fire-related smoke (PFS) and birth weight remains limited, particularly in the Southeast. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between prenatal exposure to PFS-specific PM2.5 and birth weight in Georgia, USA. METHODS: We analyzed 448,477 singleton term births (37-42 weeks of gestation) with last menstrual period (LMP) dates between Janua

Managing Complex Pacemaker-Associated Endocarditis With Thromboembolism in Tbilisi, Georgia: A Case Report.

Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), including permanent pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, have become crucial in managing cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. However, despite advancements in implantation techniques and prophylactic measures, CIED-related infections, including infective endocarditis (IE), remain a significant clinical challenge. These infections contribute to considerable morbidity and mortality, often requiring prolonged hospitalization, complex interventions, and significant healthca

Multiple-species resistance to avermectin anthelmintics on beef cattle farms in Georgia, USA.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is a worldwide problem in all livestock production systems. Several prevalence studies performed internationally demonstrate that AR in cattle parasites is a growing problem; however, there are no published studies on prevalence in the United States (USA). In this study, we performed fecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) on twelve cow-calf farms in Georgia, USA. On all farms the efficacy of eprinomectin pour-on (Eprinex®) and doramectin injectable (Dectomax®) was tested individually, as well as a combination treatment of dorame
