Histopathological alterations in gills of two Patagonian reef fishes exposed to complex mixtures of anthropogenic contaminants.

Anthropogenic pollution is a major threat to coastal marine ecosystems. Due to their direct exposure to the surrounding water, fish gills are highly susceptible to contaminant-induced damage, making gill histopathology a valuable approach for evaluating the health status of fish populations in impacted environments. In this study, we evaluate gill histopathological alterations in two wild marine fishes, the rockfish Sebastes oculatus and the sandperch Pinguipes brasilianus. Fish were sampled at a site exposed to multiple anthropogenic sources of chemical contamination (exposed site: S. oculatu

Widespread Association of Ciliates Colonizing Gills of Shrimps Inhabiting Vents and Seeps Across the Pacific Ocean.

Bacterial symbiosis is well-documented in chemosynthesis-based ecosystems, but associations with microeukaryotes remain overlooked. In this study, using scanning electron microscopy and 18S rDNA barcoding, we investigate the presence, diversity, and biogeographic patterns of ciliate epibionts associated with two deep-sea caridean families: Alvinocarididae and Thoridae. We identified a widespread lineage of ciliates colonizing the gills of different alvinocaridid species, extending their previously known distribution in freshwater and coastal habitats to deep ocean down to 3388 m. These ciliate

Immune Suppression and Rapid Invasion of Nile Tilapia Gills Following an Acute Challenge by Flavobacterium davisii.

Flavobacterium davisii is one of the causative agents of columnaris disease, significantly impacting Nile tilapia aquaculture. This study examines the invasion and immune evasion mechanisms of a highly virulent F. davisii strain through transcriptomic profiling of tilapia gills following acute immersion. We identified 8192 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at 2 h, 6 h, and 12 h post-infection. They are enriched in pathways related to oxidative stress, immune suppression, tissue necrosis, and bacterial infection. Notably, early overexpression of rhamnose-binding lectin and mucin genes facil

Expression of Antimicrobic Peptide Piscidin1 in Gills Mast Cells of Giant Mudskipper Periophthalmodon schlosseri (Pallas, 1770).

The amphibious teleost Giant mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri, Pallas 1770) inhabit muddy plains and Asian mangrove forests. It spends more than 90% of its life outside of the water, using its skin, gills, and buccal-pharyngeal cavity mucosa to breathe in oxygen from the surrounding air. All vertebrates have been found to have mast cells (MCs), which are part of the innate immune system. These cells are mostly found in the mucous membranes of the organs that come in contact with the outside environment. According to their morphology, MCs have distinctive cytoplasmic granules that are re

Dactylogyridae (Monogenoidea, Polyonchoinea) from the gills of Auchenipterus nuchalis (Siluriformes, Auchenipteridae) from the Tocantins River, Brazil.

Two species of Cosmetocleithrum Kritsky, Thatcher & Boeger, 1986 (both new) and two species of Demidospermus Suriano, 1983 (one new) are reported from the gills of the catfish Auchenipterus nuchalis, popularly known as "mapará", from the Tocantins River and tributaries, North Region of Brazil. Cosmetocleithrum berecae n. sp. differs from all other species presently known in the genus by the morphology of the anchors presenting an elongate shaft and short recurved point, a coiled male copulatory organ (MCO) with three rings, and an elongate slender accessory piece with a bifurcated distal end.

Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide and Metrifonate on Monogenean ligictaluridus floridanus on Catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus , Rafinesque) Gills.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and metrifonate (Mtf) are common products used in ectoparasite infestations on fish cultures. The therapeutic efficacy of H2O2 and Mtf on a common monogenean parasite, Ligictaluridus floridanus, was evaluated in channel catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ). In vitro trials were conducted using excised fish gills naturally infected with L. floridanus, which were immersed in H2O2 (150, 300, and 570 mg L(-1)) and Mtf (0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 mg L(-1)) solutions. The efficacy of the treatments was based on the survival time of the parasites, observed microscopically. In addition, a

Environmental effects on the gills and blood of Oreochromis niloticus exposed to rivers of Bahia, Brazil.

Through the integration of chemical, biochemical and morphological analyses, this study investigated the effects of multiple pollutants on environmental biomarkers, such as gill histopathological changes and hematological and biochemical parameters, in Oreochromis niloticus exposed to four sites in the Jacuipe and Subaé rivers over seven days. Sediment analyses identified Sapelba as the most contaminated site, followed by Oliveira de Campinhos, Santo Amaro and Jacuípe. Water analyses revealed aluminum, iron and manganese at all sites. Aluminum and other metal were also detected in the gills of

Isolation and characterization of putative O2 chemoreceptor cells from the gills of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus).

Little is known about the cells or mechanisms of O2 chemoreception in vertebrates other than mammals. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to identify O2-sensitive chemoreceptors in a fish. Putative O2-sensitive chemoreceptors were dissociated from the gills of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and cultured. A population of cells was identified with morphology and a histochemical profile similar to mammalian carotid body Type I (glomus) cells and pulmonary neuroepithelial cells. These cells stain with neutral red and appear to be the branchial neuroepithelial cells. Immunocytochemical

A patient with both Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome and chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome: clue to the genetics of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome?

This is the first published case description of the association of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) and chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS; previously referred to as CATCH-22 syndrome). The co-occurrence of GTS, 22q11DS, and their behavioral/neuropsychiatric abnormalities may be due to the common endophenotypic mechanisms shared by these disorders, rather than due to specificity for GTS. Research into this genomic region may lead to advancement in neurobehavioral/neuropsychiatric genetics, which will help us in further explicating a broader perspective of gene-brain-behavior i

Gills are not the primary site of gas exchange in the suspension-feeding hemichordate Protoglossus graveolens.

The gills are hypothesized to play a key role in early vertebrate evolution by replacing the skin as the primary site of gas exchange. In this scenario, water flow across the gills for suspension feeding was coopted for gas exchange in stem vertebrates, facilitating the evolution of larger, active fishes. This is supported by a stem-vertebrate origin for structures increasing gill capacity for gas exchange. However, these structures might have enhanced an already dominant capacity at ancestral deuterostome gills. To test this, we characterized gill function in the suspension-feeding hemichorda

Thiram Induced Hematological Disorders, Gills Toxicity, Oxidative Stress, and Antioxidant Alterations in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio).

Thiram is a dithiocarbamate fungicide that protects turf, fruits and ornamental plants. The purpose of this experiment was to ascertain the toxico-pathological effects of thiram induced toxicity in Cyprinus carpio. The fish were divided into four groups: Group A was kept as control, compared to groups B, C, and D exposed to 40, 80, and 120 μg/L thiram, respectively. The results indicated a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in body weight, while both the absolute and relative weights of gills increased significantly (p < 0.05) in fish exposed to a higher concentration of thiram. Hematological pa

Integrated transcriptomic and co-expression analyses reveal hypoxia-responsive patterns in the gills of Mytilus coruscus.

Hypoxia is a significant environmental stressor that negatively affects the growth, survival, and overall health of marine bivalves. This study aimed to investigate the physiological and molecular responses of Mytilus coruscus (thick-shell mussel) to hypoxic stress by integrating histological analysis, enzyme activity assays, whole-transcriptome sequencing, and Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) of gill tissues. The results revealed marked structural damage to gill filaments under prolonged hypoxia, including epithelial swelling, exfoliation, and lamellar fusion. Enzyme activ

Pathological effects of Thaparocleidus vistulensis (Siwak, 1932) infection on the gills of Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758.

Histopathological alterations caused by Thaparocleidus vistulensis (Siwak, 1932) on the European catfish Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758 were investigated by histopathology and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pathological effects of T. vistulensis on the gills of the European catfish were mainly related to the attachment sites of the parasite to its host, but damage also affected adjacent structures. The primary attachment relies on the anchors at the opisthaptor which commonly adheres both superficially and deeply, into the basal region between adjacent secondary lamellae. At the attach

Ontogeny and morphometrics of the gills and swim bladder of air-breathing striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus.

The air-breathing fish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus has been shown to have highly plastic branchial surfaces whose area (SA) increases with temperature and aquatic hypoxia. This modulation occurs through development of inter-lamellar cell mass (ILCM). Paradoxically, in conditions where this fish has been shown capable of covering its entire aerobic scope from the water phase, it has been shown to have a very small branchial SA. To address this paradox, we measured the SA, harmonic mean diffusion distance (τh) and calculated the anatomic diffusion factor (ADF) of the branchial and swim bladder s

Are the surface areas of the gills and body involved with changing metabolic scaling with temperature?

The metabolic-level boundaries (MLB) hypothesis proposes that metabolic level mediates the relative influence of surface area (SA)- versus volume-related metabolic processes on the body-mass scaling of metabolic rate in organisms. The variation in the scaling of SA may affect how metabolic level affects the metabolic scaling exponent. This study aimed to determine the influence of increasing metabolic level at a higher temperature on the metabolic scaling exponent of the goldfish and determine the link between metabolic scaling exponents and SA parameters of both gills and body. The SA of gill
