Presented in this article is a technique in which vertical releasing incisions are used to modify the basic pedicle graft procedure in the treatment of localized gingival recession. Criteria for the selection of a proper donor site are discussed, and the rationale for its use is explained. Two case reports are included to demonstrate the use of the procedure.

The prevalence and distribution of gingivitis and gingival recession were studied in 820 Nigerians aged 15, 19, 20 and 21 years sampled from Lagos educational establishments. The prevalence of gingivitis was relatively high at all ages. There was a high degree of correlation between the prevalence of gingivitis affecting mouths, papillae and margins. Poor aesthetics due to gingival recession can be a common concern among patients, specifically in individuals with gummy or high smile line. Various factors including patient related, site specific and technical factors need to be considered while treating gingival recession, as they all have a significant bearing on treatment success. Patients having aesthetic problems due to exposed root surfaces should have surgical root coverage procedures. Pathologic migration of anterior teeth is another aesthetic and functional problem that may be associated with advanced or chronic periodontal disease.

A multicenter prospective consecutive case series study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of placental allografts to correct moderate to severe buccogingival recession defects. Nineteen healthy patients, 13 women and 6 men, ranging in age from 29 to 63 years, with 43 maxillary and mandibular gingival recession defects of > 4 mm deep were included.
