Analysis of mutations in the SOS-1 gene in two Polish families with hereditary gingival fibromatosis.

OBJECTIVES: To establish whether two families from Malopolska and Mazovia provinces in Poland are affected by hereditary gingival fibromatosis type 1, caused by a single-cytosine insertion in exon 21 of the Son-of-Sevenless-1 gene. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six subjects with hereditary gingival fibromatosis and five healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Gingival biopsies were collected during gingivectomy or tooth extraction and used for histopathological evaluation. Total RNA and genomic DNA were purified from cultured gingival fibroblasts followed by cDNA and genomic DNA sequencing and a

Gingival overgrowth approached using recent mechanical and laser technologies: A case report.

Gingival enlargement is a side effect of different drug classes, with calcium channel blockers being among the most often cited examples. Most often accompanied by a disruption in the oral biofilm, this form of gingival overgrowth, with histological signs of hyperplasia and hypertrophy, becomes a chronic inflammatory condition with the oral biofilm a primary cause. This periodontal disease is now classified as 'dental biofilm-induced gingivitis', and its preferred name is drug-influenced gingival expansion. The present study presented the case of a patient with gingival enlargement while being

Hereditary Gingival Fibromatosis and Developmental Anomalies: A Case Report.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis is the most common genetic form of gingival fibromatosis that develops as a slow, progressive, benign, localized, or generalized enlargement of the keratinized gingiva. It is a genetically heterogeneous disorder transmitted as an autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive trait or appears sporadically. Here, we report a case of a male patient with generalized gingival hyperplasia with great tissue extension to the palatal region, bilateral mandibular torus, bilateral exostosis in the maxillary posterior region, anterior open bite, and diastema in anterior maxill

A rare case of generalized pyogenic granuloma: a case report.

Gingival enlargement is defined as an overgrowth or increase in size of the gingiva. Enlargement can be of many types depending on etiologic factors like inflammation, drug-induced effects, neoplasm, hormonal imbalance, and systemic involvement (leukemia, etc). Drugs and hormonal imbalance are the most common causes of gingival enlargement. Nonspecific conditioned enlargement, or pyogenic granuloma, is considered an exaggerated conditioned response to minor trauma or chronic irritation. Pyogenic granuloma occurring in the oral cavity is a common phenomenon. However, simultaneously occurring ge

Comparison between traditional surgery, CO2 and Nd:Yag laser treatment for generalized gingival hyperplasia in Sturge-Weber syndrome: a retrospective study.

AIM: Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare congenital disorder that belongs to the group of neuroectodermal development anomalies called "phakomatoses". Hyperplastic lesions affect the gingiva, causing massive spontaneous bleeding. METHODS: We report a retrospective study of 11 patients affected by Sturge-Weber syndrome, with generalized gingival hyperplasia and angiomatous lesions of the oral cavity. Traditional scalpel surgery was performed in three patients; the remaining eight underwent laser gingivectomy. Specifically, four were treated with electrosurgery and a CO2 laser, and the remaining fo

Chronic periodontitis and the subsequent risk of trigeminal neuralgia: a 5-year follow-up study.

AIM: This study set out to explore the possibility that chronic periodontitis (CP) may also be a condition that could potentially result in secondary or symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia (TN) by utilizing a population-based dataset and cohort study design in Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 110,104 subjects with CP in our study cohort, and randomly selected 110,104 subjects without a history of CP as a comparison cohort. We individually tracked each patient in this study for a 5-year period to identify those who received a subsequent diagnosis of TN. RESULTS: The incidence rate of T

Early onset of hereditary gingival fibromatosis in a 28-month-old.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare, genetically transmitted disorder that only affects approximately 1 in 750,000 people. HGF is principally transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. Autosomal recessive transmission has been reported infrequently in the literature. HGF primarily has its onset with the eruption of the permanent dentition, but it can also occur with the eruption of the primary dentition and can on rare occasions be present at birth. The gingival enlargement can be generalized or localized, and can vary in severity. HGF can be on isolated entity or be part of a sy

Epithelial alpha-naphthyl acetate esterases in the green vervet monkey gingiva before and after periodontal surgery and during tooth eruption.

To provide enzymatic information on de novo formed junctional (JE) and sulcular epithelium (SE), we performed periodontal surgery on 24 teeth. Ten to 14 days postoperatively, all experimental and 16 control teeth were extracted with adjacent buccal gingiva. In addition, specimens from unerupted and partly erupted teeth containing enamel epithelium (EE) were examined. Fixed cryostat sections were cut in series, stained with HE, or incubated with and without substrate for demonstration of alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase activity and for control purposes, respectively. The distribution and intens

Management of periodontal tissues for restorative dentistry.

Proper management of periodontal tissues is required to achieve predictable long-term success with restorative dental procedures. Forced eruption as well as several surgical techniques may be used to achieve and maintain adequate biologic width during restorative and esthetic dental procedures. The technique that will yield optimal results depends on the relationship between the restoration's margins and the surrounding periodontium. A classification system that describes these interrelationships and provides treatment recommendations is included.

Histological evaluation of effects produced in alveolar bone following gingival incision with an electrosurgical scalpel.

Gingival incisions were performed distal to each of the two lower incisors on 25 adult male guinea pigs. For every animal, electrosection with an electrosurgical scalpel was used on one side, and a conventional scalpel was used on the other. The surgical instruments in all cases were brought into direct contact with periosteum. Five animals were sacrificed at each postoperative period (12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours), and sections of the areas of surgery were prepared by standard laboratory procedures. At 12 hours postoperatively there were far more soft tissue necrosis, a more extensive inflamm

Vitamin D Deficiency and Gingival Enlargement: A Case Report.

The occurrence of vitamin D insufficiency is rising constantly, and most pediatric patients are below the required levels. Individuals with vitamin D deficiency are more susceptible to inflammatory diseases because it reduces their immunity. The role of vitamin D deficiency in gingival enlargement has been reported in the literature. In this case report, we are describing a case in which a vitamin D supplement has resolved the gingival enlargement significantly without any invasive procedure. A 12-year-old boy reported a chief complaint of swollen gums in the upper and lower front teeth region

Expression of angiogenesis-stimulating factors (VEGF, CD31, CD105) and angiogenetic index in gingivae of patients with chronic periodontitis.

The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of the angiogenesis rate in chronic periodontitis (CP). A total of 61 human gingival samples were taken from patients with CP (n = 40) obtained during open curettage with gingivectomy, healthy periodontia (n = 15), and reactive lymph nodes (n = 7). Quantitative immunocytochemistry studies of VEGF, CD31 (PECAM-1) and CD105 (endoglin) were performed using the spatial visualization method. CD105/CD31 and VEGF/CD31 angiogenetic ratios (ARs) were established to determine the proliferation fraction of the endothelium. In patients with CP, t

Severe phenytoin-induced gingival enlargement associated with periodontitis.

The potential of phenytoin to induce gingival hyperplasia has been well-established. High levels of dental plaque and calculus have been reported as a critical co-factor for the development and severity of phenytoin-induced gingival hyperplasia. This article documents a severe gingival enlargement associated with periodontitis (in a patient under combined anti-epileptic therapy) and provides a rational model for its clinical management. Initially, full-mouth scaling and root planing, oral hygiene instructions, and phenytoin withdrawal were performed; however, clinical results demonstrated part

Gummy smile: clinical parameters useful for diagnosis and therapeutical approach.

In the analysis of the characteristics of a pleasant smile, a gummy smile has negative components, which most affect the esthetics of non-verbal communication. For this purpose a proposed classification based upon etiopathogenetic criteria as useful indications for a therapeutical approach is given. The nature of a high smile line can be: dento-gingival, connected to an abnormal dental eruption, which is revealed by a short clinic crown; muscular, caused by an hyperactivity of the elevator muscle of the upper lip; dento-alveolar (skeletal), due to an excessive protuberance or vertical growth o

Incidental finding of segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia during orthodontic treatment: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia (SOD) is a rare developmental disorder, with fewer than 70 cases reported in the literature. It typically presents in childhood as unilateral maxillary enlargement associated with dental anomalies and, in approximately half of cases, ipsilateral cutaneous features. Owing to its rarity and overlap with other maxillary pathologies, diagnosis remains challenging. This article aimed to report a new case of this rare disorder and highlight key management considerations through a review of the literature. OBSERVATION: A 14-year-old boy was referred

The Unilateral Enigma: An Oral-contraceptive Related Gingival Enlargement.

This article's goal is to describe a case of oral contraceptives-related drug-induced gingival hypertrophy that was treated with nonsurgical and surgical periodontal therapy. The most prevalent negative side effect of systemic medicine on the periodontal tissues continues to be drug-induced gingival overgrowth. Specific regulatory molecules known as hormones control a variety of bodily processes. Gingival hypertrophies are sometimes linked to oral contraceptives that contain oestrogen and/or progesterone. A 32-year-old female presented with a complaint of swelling of the gingiva with spontaneo
