The global cost of schizophrenia: a health economic modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder that leads to substantial disability, impaired quality of life, and reduced life expectancy. In addition to its profound impact on affected individuals, the disorder places a considerable financial burden on health care systems, caregivers, and society. Although the cost of schizophrenia has been studied in several individual countries, comprehensive global estimates across multiple cost categories remain scarce. This study aimed to estimate the global socioeconomic burden of schizophrenia using health economic modelling. METHODS: We

Of Biomedicine and Barami: Melioidosis and the Politics of Visibility in Global Health.

This article is about how melioidosis, a historically little-known infectious disease, came to be constructed as an object of evidence and rendered visible within global health. I consider the production of knowledge on melioidosis in Thailand, focusing particularly on spaces of scientific research and policy, and examining the social relations required to make the disease visible at both a national and international scale. My research demonstrates how barami, a social capital distinct to Thai culture, is cultivated alongside scientific knowledge in ways that give prominence to the researchers

COPD and Aspergillus-a complex interaction of global health importance.

Aspergillus spp are common airborne fungi, and the commonest fungal pathogen of human lungs. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the usual defences against disease are impaired to various degrees, leading to persistent airway infection, especially with bronchiectasis; allergy (or sensitisation) and probable additional airways resistance; and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis or invasive aspergillosis. Recurrent COPD exacerbations are more common in those with Aspergillus found in the airways, opening up an unassessed therapeutic opportunity to reduce hospital admission

Publishing priorities in global health: A framework and empirical analysis.

Though vital to health policymaking processes, little is known about the distribution of attention to issues global health journals focus on or their alignment with commitments to health equity. We developed a new framework and methods to help address these analytical gaps. We used content analysis to systematically identify and novel methods to measure attention to themes, subthemes and geographies represented in more than 2,000 research articles published in two of the longest-running multidisciplinary global health journals, Bulletin of the World Health Organization and Health Policy and Pl

The Pandemic Arc: Expanded Narratives in the History of Global Health.

Using the examples of plague, smallpox, and HIV/AIDS, the present essay argues for the benefits of incorporating the evolutionary histories of pathogens, beyond visible epidemic spikes within human populations, into our understanding of what pandemics actually are as epidemiological phenomena. The pandemic arc - which takes the pathogen as the defining "actor" in a pandemic, from emergence to local proliferation to globalization - offers a framework capable of bringing together disparate aspects not only of the manifestations of disease but also of human involvement in the pandemic process. A unified voice to drive global improvements in oral health.

Approximately, 3.47 billion individuals worldwide are affected by oral disorders, with untreated dental caries being the most prevalent issue, impacting 2.30 billion people. Addressing this complex health problem requires a collective and unified approach from the oral health community. However, stakeholders often focus on their own interests, leading to information silos and a lack of diverse perspectives. To foster collaboration, tackle critical topics, and promote effective communication, the Global Oral Health Forum was organized as a 2-day meeting. The forum aimed to dismantle existing si

Review of hikikomori: A global health issue, identification and treatment.

In the early 2000s, Japanese society became aware of the social phenomenon of hikikomori or social withdrawal among Japanese youth. However, the hikikomori phenomenon was not a domestic Japanese social problem, but a global social and health issue or a global silent epidemic. A literature review was conducted on the global silent epidemic issue and identifying hikikomori and effective treatment. This paper will reveal how to identify hikikomori with biomarkers or determinants and treatments for hikikomori. Impact of COVID-19 on hikikomori was briefly investigated.

The remarkable impact of iodisation programmes on global public health.

The objective of this paper is to review the global effort to eliminate iodine deficiency and its impact on public health. Iodine is an essential component of hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Iodine deficiency has multiple adverse effects in humans due to inadequate thyroid hormone production that are termed the iodine deficiency disorders. The major adverse effect is impaired cognition in children. The WHO's first estimate of the global prevalence of goitre in 1960 suggested that 20-60 % of the world's population was affected, with most of the burden in low- and middle-income countries

A global one health perspective on leptospirosis in humans and animals.

Leptospirosis is a quintessential one health disease of humans and animals caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Intra- and interspecies transmission is dependent on 1) reservoir host animals in which organisms replicate and are shed in urine over long periods of time, 2) the persistence of spirochetes in the environment, and 3) subsequent human-animal-environmental interactions. The combination of increased flooding events due to climate change, changes in human-animal-environmental interactions as a result of the pandemic that favor a rise in the incidence of leptospirosi

Health Disparities and the Global Landscape of Lymphoma Care Today.

Lymphoma encompass a wide variety of distinct disease entities, including, but not limited to, subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). In the last 3 decades, therapeutic advancements have resulted in substantial improvements in lymphoma outcome. In most high-income regions, HL is a largely curable disease and for patients with two frequent subtypes of NHL, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and follicular lymphoma (FL), survival has dramatically improved with the incorporation of rituximab as a standard treatment approach. Despite these advances, outcomes vary betw

Vaccine research and development: tuberculosis as a global health threat.

One of the aims of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Millennium Development Goals (MDG) is to reduce the number of cases of tuberculosis (TB) infection by the year 2015. However, 9 million new cases were reported in 2013, with an estimated 480,000 new cases of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) globally. Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is the most available and currently used candidate vaccine against tuberculosis; it prevents childhood TB, but its effectiveness against pulmonary TB in adults and adolescents is disputed. To achieve the goal of the WHO MDG, the need for a new improved v

Advancing the health-promoting prison: a call for global action.

The global prison population has grown exponentially in all five continents and consistent analysis shows that many diseases, illnesses and long-term conditions are over-represented in the prison population. Despite the myriad of health challenges in the population, the concept and practice of health promotion is both contested and underdeveloped with significant variation in its application in prison systems globally. The purpose of this commentary paper is twofold. The first is to provide a short overview of the health-promoting prison concept which we argue, at present, is a largely Eurocen

The Ebola Outbreak: Catalyzing a "Shift" in Global Health Governance?

BACKGROUND: As the 2014 Ebola virus disease outbreak (EVD) transitions to its post-endemic phase, its impact on the future of global public health, particularly the World Health Organization (WHO), is the subject of continued debate. Criticism of WHO's performance grew louder in the outbreak's wake, placing this international health UN-specialized agency in the difficult position of navigating a complex series of reform recommendations put forth by different stakeholders. Decisions on WHO governance reform and the broader role of the United Nations could very well shape the future landscape of

The intestinal protozoa: emerging impact on global health and development.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight new findings on the relevance of gastrointestinal protozoan infections to global public health in low-income and middle-income countries and suggest new large-scale interventions. RECENT FINDINGS: New disease burden assessments and epidemiological studies highlight the role of the major intestinal protozoa as important etiologic disease agents in low-income and middle-income countries. Despite their prevalence and adverse health impact, such information has not yet translated to the implementation of large-scale interventions as exist for helminth infections an

The contribution of vaccination to global health: past, present and future.

Vaccination has made an enormous contribution to global health. Two major infections, smallpox and rinderpest, have been eradicated. Global coverage of vaccination against many important infectious diseases of childhood has been enhanced dramatically since the creation of WHO's Expanded Programme of Immunization in 1974 and of the Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization in 2000. Polio has almost been eradicated and success in controlling measles makes this infection another potential target for eradication. Despite these successes, approximately 6.6 million children still die each yea

The "first" case of cholera in Haiti: lessons for global health.

Cholera is an acute watery diarrheal disease caused by infection with Vibrio cholerae. The disease has a high fatality rate when untreated and outbreaks of cholera have been increasing globally in the past decade, most recently in Haiti. We present the case of a 28-year-old Haitian male with a history of severe untreated mental health disorder that developed acute fatal watery diarrhea in mid-October 2010 in central Haiti after drinking from the local river. We believe he is the first or among the first cases of cholera in Haiti during the current epidemic. By reviewing his case, we extracted
