In a retrospective study of patients who had undergone myringoplasty at our department within a 12-month period, we assessed the graft take rate using tri-adcortyl ointment (TAO) as ear dressing. Data including age, site and size of perforation, grade of surgeon, surgical approach, use of postoperative ear dressings, complications and audiometric outcome was collected from the patient notes and analysed. INTRODUCTION: Avoidance of infection at the implant site is a crucial element to the success of bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) implantation. However, little evidence exists to suggest the best post-operative wound dressing to use.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report our experience with 160 consecutive BAHA patients, using four types of post-operative BAHA wound dressing (Tri-adcortyl, Mepitel, Allevyn, and Acticoat 7 with Allevyn). Patients were reviewed at week one and week two post-operatively. Infection was defined as a positive wound swab culture or evidence of cellulitis at the BAHA site.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease results in distal lower limb weakness that affects walking. In this study we assess the role of the hip flexors in compensating for distal weakness while walking and the effects of prolonged walking on these putative compensatory strategies. OBJECTS: To compare advice given by specialist otolaryngologists to patients following ventilation tube insertion and the management of purulent otorrhoea in these patients.
METHODS: A postal questionnaire was sent to all 59 specialists currently listed in the New Zealand Otolaryngology Specialist Register.

We have studied microbial secondary metabolism in a simulated microgravity (SMG) environment provided by NASA rotating-wall bioreactors (RWBs). These reactors were designed to simulate some aspects of actual microgravity that occur in space. Regulatory volume decrease (RVD) following hypo-osmotic stimulation was studied using videometric methods in isolated proximal renal tubules from trout (Salmo trutta). The relative tubule diameter increased by 132.0+/-4.8 % (maximum swelling within 1 min at 15 and 25 degrees C and within 4 min at 10 degrees C) following a change from iso-osmotic (290 mosmol kg-1) to hypo-osmotic (160 mosmol kg-1) Ringer's solution. The tubule diameter subsequently decreased to approximately one-quarter of the maximal value. Ouabain (1 mmol l-1) reduced cell swelling and inhibited the RVD response by 28.0+/-10.
