Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor of immature cells of granulocytic series, generally associated to acute myelogenous leukemia. The skin is one of the most commonly affected sites. Granulocytic sarcoma can complicate myelodysplastic syndromes and is considered a sign of poor prognosis. They are often misdiagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the lymphoblastic type, Burkitt lymphoma and large cell lymphoma. Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare extramedullary tumor composed of immature myeloid cells. It is usually associated with leukemia or other myeloproliferative disorders but can also occur without overt hematologic diseases. The breast is an uncommon site of presentation and requires a high index of suspicion for diagnosis. Granulocytic sarcoma is a tumor composed of proliferating myeloblastic cells, generally found in the orbit. A brain localization is rare. We report the case of a 11-year-old boy treated in our unit for acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML 4 Eo. FAB). After 21 months of complete remission, he developed headache and facial palsy. Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is a rare extramedullary solid tumour composed of malignant immature cells of the granulocytic series. It may herald, accompany or signal acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) or chronic granulocytic leukaemia (CGL). GS may also occur in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) where it is a sign of imminent disease progression. Following intravenous inoculation with horse blood-infected with the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) from a human fatality, two rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) exhibited pyrexia and lethargy on days 4-12 postinfection (PI). An unusual case of granulocytic sarcoma infiltrating the parotid gland of a 17-year-old woman is reported. There was no evidence of acute myeloid leukemia or chronic myeloproliferative disease at time of diagnosis. The myeloid nature of the tumor was discovered with the aid of immunochemistry. Granulocytic sarcomas are malignant solid tumors composed of poorly differentiated myeloid cells that occur in association with myelocytic leukemia. The clinicopathologic characteristics of granulocytic sarcomas that presented in the oral mucosa and in the facial, scalp and neck skin of 8 patients in the acute phase of myelocytic leukemia are described and discussed. Although most of the tumors were demonstrably sensitive to cytosine arabinoside, alone or in combination with other antineoplastic drugs, the prognostic portent of these lesions was extremely poor.
