Sibilant differentiation before and after tongue cancer surgery: Acoustics, kinematics and the role of sensorimotor controla).

This study characterises articulatory-kinematic strategies to differentiate the sibilants /s/ and /ʃ/ in individuals before and after tongue cancer surgery. We further evaluate whether successful differentiation can be predicted by auditory and somatosensory motor learning abilities. Acoustic and electromagnetic articulography data were collected longitudinally (pre-surgery, and 6, 12, and 18 months post-surgery) from Dutch individuals treated for T1-T3 tongue tumours (n = 12). Sex- and age-matched typical speakers (n = 11) were tested once. We analysed the Euclidean distance (ED) between the

Effects of botulinum toxin on paraspinal muscle imbalance during spinal motions in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis: Assessment using high-density electromyography.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) remains unclear, with muscle imbalance being a widely discussed hypothesis. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the impact of muscle imbalance on AIS by injecting botulinum toxin A (BTX) into patients' unilateral muscles and investigating altered back muscle synergies. METHODS: Three AIS patients received BTX injections in the concave-side paraspinal muscles. High-density electromyogram arrays placed from T8 to L4 recorded signals during five spinal motions at four timepoints (one pre-BTX and three post-BTX). Muscle synergies w

Eye Movements during Measurements of Visual Vertical in the Poststroke Subacute Phase.

The subjective visual vertical (VV), the visually estimated direction of gravity, is essential for assessing vestibular function and visuospatial cognition. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying altered VV perception in stroke participants with unilateral spatial neglect (USN), specifically by examining their eye movement patterns during VV judgment tasks. Participants with USN demonstrated limited eye movement scanning along a rotating bar, often fixating on prominent ends, such as the top or bottom. This suggests a reflexive response to visually salient areas, pote

Spaceflight and Ground-Based Microgravity Simulation Impact on Cognition and Brain Plasticity.

Microgravity exposure during spaceflight has been linked to cognitive impairments, including deficits in attention, executive function, and spatial memory. Both space missions and ground-based analogs-such as head-down bed rest, dry immersion, and hindlimb unloading-consistently demonstrate that altered gravity disrupts brain structure and neural plasticity. Neuroimaging data reveal significant changes in brain morphology, functional connectivity, and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. At the cellular level, simulated microgravity impairs synaptic plasticity, alters dendritic spine architecture, an

Beating Drug Tests by Ingesting Detoxifying Agents or Adulterating Urine in vitro: Are These Practices Effective?

BACKGROUND: Workplace drug testing aims to deter employees from abusing drugs. Nevertheless, people try to beat such tests in several ways. Therefore, it is important for drug-testing laboratories to identify adulterated specimens before analysis. METHODS: A literature search on beating drug tests, urine adulteration, flushing agents, detoxifying agents, and Internet-based adulterants, published in English from 1986 to present, was conducted using PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and ResearchGate. RESULTS: People try to beat drug testing in two ways: by ingesting detoxifying ag

Fighting Thyroid Cancer with Microgravity Research.

Microgravity in space or simulated by special ground-based devices provides an unusual but unique environment to study and influence tumour cell processes. By investigating thyroid cancer cells in microgravity for nearly 20 years, researchers got insights into tumour biology that had not been possible under normal laboratory conditions: adherently growing cancer cells detach from their surface and form three-dimensional structures. The cells included in these multicellular spheroids (MCS) were not only altered but behave also differently to those grown in flat sheets in normal gravity, more cl

Simulated microgravity inhibits cell focal adhesions leading to reduced melanoma cell proliferation and metastasis via FAK/RhoA-regulated mTORC1 and AMPK pathways.

Simulated microgravity (SMG) was reported to affect tumor cell proliferation and metastasis. However, the underlying mechanism is elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that clinostat-modelled SMG reduces BL6-10 melanoma cell proliferation, adhesion and invasiveness in vitro and decreases tumor lung metastasis in vivo. It down-regulates metastasis-related integrin α6β4, MMP9 and Met72 molecules. SMG significantly reduces formation of focal adhesions and activation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and Rho family proteins (RhoA, Rac1 and Cdc42) and of mTORC1 kinase, but activates AMPK and ULK1 kin

Changes in muscle sympathetic nerve activity and effect of breathing maneuvers during microgravity induced by parabolic flight in humans.

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to clarify how muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in humans, which plays an important role in blood pressure control against gravity, is altered under microgravity (microG) conditions, and how the MSNA change is modified by breathing maneuvers. Ten subjects seated themselves in a jet aircraft with their knees extended. MSNA was recorded microneurographically from the left tibial nerve with simultaneous monitoring of ECG, blood pressure, respiration, and intrathoracic blood volume estimated by the impedance method during parabolic flight in a jet aircraft. Preimplantation Flow Testing of Ahmed Glaucoma Valve and the Early Postoperative Clinical Outcome.

PURPOSE: The Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implant is designed to prevent early postoperative hypotony. There is evidence of variation in hypotony rates in clinical trials which may be due to surgical technique variation, entry site leakage or valve defects from 'over priming'. We describe a simple preimplantation gravity driven test to assess valve function after priming that may reduce hypotony rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case note review. An in vivo flow test of AGVs, based on the gravity driven test was introduced prior to implantation. The onset and offset of flow through th

Elephant-inspired tapered cable-driven hyper-redundant manipulator: design and performance analysis.

The cable-driven hyper-redundant manipulator (CDHM), distinguished by its high flexibility and adjustable stiffness, is extensively utilized in confined and obstacle-rich environments such as aerospace and nuclear facilities. This paper introduces a novel CDHM inspired by the trunk of elephants, which changes the arm structure from cylindrical to conical. This alteration diminishes the arm's self-weight, reduces the moment arm of gravity, decreases the volume of the end joint, narrows the stroke of the driving cables, and boosts the maximum joint speed of the manipulator. Additionally, this st

Semicircular canal biomechanics in health and disease.

The semicircular canals are responsible for sensing angular head motion in three-dimensional space and for providing neural inputs to the central nervous system (CNS) essential for agile mobility, stable vision, and autonomic control of the cardiovascular and other gravity-sensitive systems. Sensation relies on fluid mechanics within the labyrinth to selectively convert angular head acceleration into sensory hair bundle displacements in each of three inner ear sensory organs. Canal afferent neurons encode the direction and time course of head movements over a broad range of movement frequencie

Orthopedic issues in pregnancy.

Pregnancy taxes the musculoskeletal system. The enlarging gravid uterus alters the maternal body's center of gravity, mechanically stressing the axial and pelvic systems, and compounds the stresses that hormone level fluctuations and fluid retention exert. While the pregnant woman is prone to many musculoskeletal injuries, most can be controlled conservatively, but some require emergent surgical intervention. This article describes pregnancy-related orthopedic problems and related conditions, and discusses their pathogenesis, signs, symptoms, physical examination findings, diagnostic work-up,

Drug-induced hyperthermia and muscle rigidity: a practical approach.

Body thermoregulation can be violently offset by drugs capable of altering the balance between heat production and dissipation. Such events may rapidly become fatal. The drugs that are involved in the eruption of such syndromes include inhalation anaesthetics, sympathomimetic agents, serotonin antagonists, antipsychotic agents and compounds that exhibit anticholinergic properties. The resultant hyperthermia is frequently accompanied by an intense skeletal muscle hypermetabolic reaction that leads to rapidly evolving rigidity, extensive rhabdomyolysis and hyperkalemia. The differential diagnosi

The effects of space flight during gestation on rat uterine smooth muscle.

Pregnant rats were flown on a NASA space shuttle during days 11-20 of gestation and the effects of pregnancy maintenance and uterine myometrial smooth muscle were evaluated. There was no effect of space flight on fetal mass in rats examined at recovery on day 20 of gestation (G-20). Rats allowed to go to term delivered vaginally at days 22-23, but space flight significantly decreased pup mass at birth. Space flight did not alter myometrial smooth muscle volume at G-20 and postpartum when compared to flight delayed synchronous controls, but flight animals showed a 37% decrease in myometrial smo

Global electric vehicle network: Structural patterns and news sentiment.

Although the expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) is altering international trade patterns, the interaction between market organization and policy intervention remains underdeveloped. Using a social network perspective, we describe the global EV trade network from 2012 to 2021 and show that the U.S., China, Germany, and Japan occupy central positions in cross-border exchanges. We then employ an extended gravity model to examine whether media sentiment is associated with trade flows. A sentiment measure derived from the GDELT database suggests that favorable coverage is associated with higher E

Pressure applied: Mechanisms affecting heart-lung interactions and cardiac filling in patients with HFpEF during rest and exercise.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is characterized by elevated left-ventricular (LV) filling pressures largely owing to diastolic dysfunction and stiffness. The measurement of filling pressure presents unique challenges as cardiac structures live within the context of the thorax. The heart and pulmonary vasculature are therefore subjected to the same changes in external volume as the lung. Here, we review the mechanisms by which LV filling pressure interacts with the thoracic space, with a particular focus on patients with HFpEF during rest and exercise. Specifically, we d

Exposure of volunteers to microgravity by dry immersion bed over 21 days results in gene expression changes and adaptation of T cells.

The next steps of deep space exploration are manned missions to Moon and Mars. For safe space missions for crew members, it is important to understand the impact of space flight on the immune system. We studied the effects of 21 days dry immersion (DI) exposure on the transcriptomes of T cells isolated from blood samples of eight healthy volunteers. Samples were collected 7 days before DI, at day 7, 14, and 21 during DI, and 7 days after DI. RNA sequencing of CD3+ T cells revealed transcriptional alterations across all time points, with most changes occurring 14 days after DI exposure. At day
