Effect of monochromatic light combinations on muscle fiber types in broilers after thyroidectomy.

Our previous research indicated that monochromatic light combinations influence muscle fiber types in broilers, potentially through alterations in thyroid function, yet the underlying mechanisms remained elusive. Here, we employed a thyroidectomy (TX) model to investigate the role of thyroid hormone (T3) in mediating these light-induced effects. Broilers were reared under single-monochromatic light (white-white [WW], red-red [RR], green-green [GG], blue-blue [BB]) or different light combinations (green-blue [GB], blue-green [BG], red-blue [RB]). Our results demonstrate that monochromatic light

Effect of monochromatic light stimuli during embryogenesis on muscular growth, chemical composition, and meat quality of breast muscle in male broilers.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of monochromatic light stimuli during embryogenesis on breast muscle growth, chemical composition, and meat quality of male broilers. Fertile broiler eggs (Arbor Acres; n = 1,320) were preweighed and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups in 3 modified incubators: 1) control group (in dark condition), 2) monochromatic green light group (560 nm), and 3) monochromatic blue light group (480 nm). The monochromatic lighting systems sourced from light-emitting diode lamps and were equalized at the intensity of 15 lx at eggshell level. After hatch

Rhodopsin-mediated blue-light damage to the rat retina: effect of photoreversal of bleaching.

PURPOSE: Acute white-light damage to rods depends on the amount of rhodopsin available for bleaching during light exposure. Bleached rhodopsin is metabolically regenerated through the visual cycle involving the pigment epithelium, or photochemically by deep blue light through photoreversal of bleaching. Because photoreversal is faster than metabolic regeneration of rhodopsin by several orders of magnitude, the photon catch capacity of the retina is significantly augmented during blue-light illumination, which may explain the greater susceptibility of the retina to blue light than to green ligh

Behavioral and transcriptomic responses of wild least horseshoe bats to artificial light.

Artificial light has altered nighttime environments, jeopardizing the fitness of organisms. While many nocturnal animals avoid artificial light, the molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain elusive. This study aimed to explore the behavioral and transcriptomic responses of least horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus pusillus) to artificial light. We manipulated three lighting conditions (i.e., dark control, white light, and green light) inside bat roost. We assessed behavioral responses and gene expressions in the adrenal gland-kidney complexes and brains of bats. Our analyses showed that whit

Reducing light sensitivity during and between migraine attacks: A prospective study investigating spectral tuning of white light.

BackgroundPhotophobia is experienced by most individuals with migraine, and it is frequently the most bothersome symptom other than headache. Light is not perceived uniformly; spectral composition and intensity influence discomfort and can exacerbate symptoms. While monochromatic green light shows therapeutic potential, it appears visually unnatural and is impractical for daily use. This study aimed to determine whether spectrally tailored white light, more visually acceptable in everyday environments, reduces light sensitivity among those with migraine.MethodsTwenty adults (18-44 years) with

Light-emitting diode spectral sensitivity relationship with reproductive parameters and ovarian maturation in yellowtail damselfish, Chrysiptera parasema.

The present study investigated the effects of exposure to different light spectra and intensities on ovarian maturation in yellowtail damselfish, Chrysiptera parasema over a 4-months period. We used a white fluorescent bulb and three different light-emitting diodes (LEDs: red, peak at 630nm; green, 530nm; blue, 450nm), at three different intensities each (0.3, 0.6, and 0.9W/m(2)). The effects of different illuminations were assessed by measuring the mRNA and protein expressions of vitellogenin (VTG) and estrogen receptor (ER), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and plasma estradiol-17β (E2) hormone le

Monochromatic light affects intestinal barrier function of chick via an anti-oxidation pathway involving melatonin and its receptor Mel1b.

Extensive evidence indicated that monochromatic lights could significantly affect broiler growth performance and intestinal function. However, the exact underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we focused on the photosensitive hormone melatonin due to its high photosensitivity in broilers to investigate the changes in broiler intestinal function under different monochromatic lights. Broilers were randomly assigned to four light colors: white light (WL), blue light (BL), green light (GL), red light (RL). At post-hatching day 3, half of broilers from each light color were pinealectom

The role of opsin genes in mediating phototaxis and color preference in the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer).

BACKGROUND: Insect light traps and color sticky traps are widely used to monitor and control pests based on phototaxis, but the role of opsin genes in regulating phototaxis and color preference in Myzus persicae remains poorly understood. RESULTS: The M. persicae showed stronger phototactic response to green light than to yellow light, yet preferred yellow cardboard. Four opsin genes (MpLW, MpUV1, MpUV2, and MpUV-Like) were cloned and characterized, revealing distinct spatiotemporal expression patterns. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induced MpUV1, MpUV2, and MpUV-Like expression, whereas green

Light-induced suppression of nocturnal serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity in chick pineal gland and retina: a wavelength comparison.

Effects of white and monochromatic (blue-434 nm, green-548 nm, and red-614 nm) lights on the nighttime retinal and pineal NAT activity were examined in chicks. The potency of the tested lights to suppress NAT activity was similar for the retina and pineal gland, with a following rank order: white > green > blue > or = red. The studied tissues of chick were far less sensitive to pulses of monochromatic light than the rat pineal gland. The potency of light to decrease pineal NAT activity of rat was: white > green >> blue > red. In chicks, the suppression of the nocturnal NAT activity produced by

DADOS Spectroscopy of Organotypic Brain Slices to Determine Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Oxidative Stress.

BACKGROUND: Organotypic brain slices are state-of-the-art ex vivo preparations that allow the study of all types of brain cells for several weeks to months. The brain slices are cultured on semi-permeable membranes, and as the slices flatten and become transparent, remain viable for several weeks. However, without cellular staining, assessing slice health remains challenging. Thus, this study aimed to determine whether assessing spectroscopy of the living brain slices can detect oxidative stress. METHODS: Brain slices (300 µm) were prepared from postnatal day 8-10 mouse brains and cultured as

A Bistable UV-Sensitive Opsin from a Reef Building Coral Showing a Switchable and Tunable Regulation of Gs-Signaling by Different Wavelengths of Light.

Cnidarians possess a large number of opsins in their genomes for their various photoreceptive functions. In particular, they uniquely possess Gs-coupled opsins that induce intracellular cAMP accumulation in a light-dependent manner. These Gs-coupled opsins, cnidopsins, are powerful optogenetic tools that manipulate cAMP-dependent cellular responses. In this study, we characterized a cnidopsin, named AtCnidop3a, from the coral Acropora tenuis as a Gs-coupled and UV-sensitive bistable pigment. This cnidopsin showed a large spectral shift upon activation from absorption maxima from 395 to 560 nm,

Contribution of M-opsin-based color vision to refractive development in mice.

M-opsin, encoded by opn1mw gene, is involved in green-light perception of mice. The role of M-opsin in emmetropization of mice remains uncertain. To answer the above question, 4-week-old wild-type (WT) mice were exposed to white light or green light (460-600 nm, a peak at 510 nm) for 12 weeks. Refractive development was estimated biweekly. After treatment, retinal function was assessed using electroretinogram (ERG). Dopamine (DA) in the retina was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography, M-opsin and S-opsin protein levels by Western blot and ELISA, and mRNA expressions of opn1mw an

Using light to establish habits in laboratory mice.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Perseverative behaviours are commonly assessed using operant paradigms in which rodents work for drugs or food under physiological deprivation, limiting translational relevance to some behavioural addictions. Here we validated an operant paradigm in which the acquired behaviour is driven neither by physiological needs nor novelty seeking. METHODS: Mice were trained to lever-press for green light. Exp.1 used a within-subjects design to examine lever discrimination and whether responding could be "satiated" by light preexposure. Exp.2 examined the necessity of instrumental

The effect of different wavelengths of light during incubation on the development of rhythmic pineal melatonin biosynthesis in chick embryos.

Rhythmic pineal melatonin biosynthesis develops in chick embryos incubated under a light (L)-dark (D) cycle of polychromatic white light. The spectral sensitivity of the embryonic pineal gland is not known and was investigated in this study. Broiler breeder eggs (Ross 308, n=450) were incubated under white, red, green or blue light under the 12L : 12D cycle. Melatonin was measured in extracts of pineal glands by radioimmunoassay. The daily rhythm of pineal melatonin levels in 20-day-old chick embryos was confirmed during the final stages of embryonic life under all four wavelengths of light wi

Suppression of both ELIP1 and ELIP2 in Arabidopsis does not affect tolerance to photoinhibition and photooxidative stress.

ELIPs (early light-induced proteins) are thylakoid proteins transiently induced during greening of etiolated seedlings and during exposure to high light stress conditions. This expression pattern suggests that these proteins may be involved in the protection of the photosynthetic apparatus against photooxidative damage. To test this hypothesis, we have generated Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) mutant plants null for both elip genes (Elip1 and Elip2) and have analyzed their sensitivity to light during greening of seedlings and to high light and cold in mature plants. In particular, we have e
