Exploring detection of contact vs. fantasy online sexual offenders in chats with minors: Statistical discourse analysis of self-disclosure and emotion words.

This exploratory study is the first to identify content differences between youths' online chats with contact child sex offenders (CCSOs; seek to meet with youths) and those with fantasy child sex offenders (FCSOs; do not meet with youths) using statistical discourse analysis (SDA). Past studies suggest that CCSOs share their experiences and emotions with targeted youths (self-disclosure grooming tactic) and encourage them to reciprocate, to build trust and closer relationships through a cycle of self-disclosures. In this study, we examined 36,029 words in 4,353 messages within 107 anonymized

Pilocarpine, a non-hallucinogenic cholinergic agonist, elicits limb flicking in cats.

The centrally- and peripherally-acting muscarinic cholinergic agonist pilocarpine (PILO, 0.125-1.0 mg/kg, IP) elicited a significantly increased frequency of occurrence of limb flicking at 0.25-1.0 mg/kg, and significantly increased the frequency of occurrence of other grooming behaviors, in 4-6 cats in the 90 min following its administration. These effects of PILO at 0.5 mg/kg were antagonized by the peripherally-acting antimuscarinic agent, N-methylscopolamine (MESCO, 0.5 mg/kg, IP), when MESCO was administered 15 min before PILO. The same lisuride (LIS, 0.05 mg/kg, IP). These results provid

Behaviour-associated alopecia areata in mice.

In 5 different mouse strains, we observed alopecic lesions most commonly in male breeding animals kept with C57BL females. Alopecic areas were located most frequently on the head, but were also found over the shoulders, the back and the pelvic regions. Observations gained through time-lapse photography indicate the cause is a slight increase in self-grooming and a dramatic increase in allogrooming by their female partners. The increased frequency of lesions of males kept with C57BL females suggests that the increased grooming activity may be genetically determined.

Effects of environmental enrichment and stereotypic behavior on maternal behavior and infant viability in a model carnivore, the American mink (Neovison vison).

In several species, stress compromises maternal behaviors that are important for infant viability (e.g. licking and grooming). Understanding how stress in captivity affects maternal behavior could therefore be beneficial, especially for carnivores in zoos and breeding centers where infant mortality is often high. We used a model carnivore--American mink--to test two hypotheses, namely that maternal investment and/or behavior is i. improved by environmental enrichment; and ii. compromised by stereotypic behavior. We observed 22 females raised in an indoor facility, 9 enriched, 13 non-enriched.

Social Hair Plucking's Associations with Other Behaviors and Its Health Considerations, in Captive Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Primate social hair plucking (SHP) has been posited to be prosocial or agonistic, though the health-associated concerns of SHP are less frequently explored. We studied SHP in seven mixed-sex groups of captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), at the National Biomedical Research Institute. We examined whether individual rates of SHP were associated with grooming, aggression, and socio-demographic characteristics. We also examined whether SHP rates were associated with alopecia, body condition, and hair cortisol concentrations. Rates of SHP production and reception were similar to grooming and a

Management of Facial Hair in Women.

Facial hair in women generally is considered to be unwanted. The presence of facial hair in women and its associated conditions, treatmens options, and management strategies are not commonly discussed in most medical care settings. The United States military, which includes more than 220,000 active-duty female service members, has strict and specific grooming standards, which for many years have been a hot topic focused primarily on male service members. Facial hair in women is not addressed in military grooming standards across the services, but one can postulate that the expectation is for w

Neuroligin-1 deletion results in impaired spatial memory and increased repetitive behavior.

Neuroligins (NLs) are a family of neural cell-adhesion molecules that are involved in excitatory/inhibitory synapse specification. Multiple members of the NL family (including NL1) and their binding partners have been linked to cases of human autism and mental retardation. We have now characterized NL1-deficient mice in autism- and mental retardation-relevant behavioral tasks. NL1 knock-out (KO) mice display deficits in spatial learning and memory that correlate with impaired hippocampal long-term potentiation. In addition, NL1 KO mice exhibit a dramatic increase in repetitive, stereotyped gro

[Interaction between gabapentin and D-serin in the formalin orofacial test].

Gabapentin is a useful agent for the relief of trigeminal neuralgia and orofacial phantom pain. However, there is scarce information on the gabapentin analgesic effect in orofacial pain models. We tested the analgesic action of gabapentin on the formalin-induced face grooming in the rat, an orofacial pain paradigm. IP Gabapentin (10 mg/kg), induced a drastic reduction in face grooming during phase I and II, indicating a clear-cut antinociceptive effect. However, at 1 mg/kg, gabapentin had an analgesic effect only on phase I. D-serine (100 microg, ICV) was silent when given alone and did not an

Effect of NMDA receptor antagonists on D1, D2 and D1/D2 mediated behaviors in intact rats.

The effect of treatment with the competitive (CGP 43487) and non-competitive (MK-801) NMDA antagonists on behaviors induced by the stimulation of D1 (SKF 38393 induced grooming), D2 (LY 171555 elicited hypermotility) or D1/D2 (apomorphine induced locomotion and stereotypies) was observed in intact rats. The administration of low doses of MK-801 (0.03 and 0.06 mg/kg) or CGP 43487 (0.375 and 0.75 mg/kg), which were without effect by themselves on animal locomotion, reduced the hyperactivity induced by LY 171555 (0.15 mg/kg) and did not change the stimulating motor effect of a low dose of apomorp

Widespread Chemical Detoxification of Alkaloid Venom by Formicine Ants.

The ability to detoxify defensive compounds of competitors provides key ecological advantages that can influence community-level processes. Although common in plants and bacteria, this type of detoxification interaction is extremely rare in animals. Here, using laboratory behavioral assays and analyses of videotaped interactions in South America, we report widespread venom detoxification among ants in the subfamily Formicinae. Across both data sets, nine formicine species, representing all major clades, used a stereotyped grooming behavior to self-apply formic acid (acidopore grooming) in resp

Body mass index and serum gamma-glutamyltransferase level as risk factors for injuries related to professional horse racing: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Prevention of horse-related injuries is considered difficult because horse behavior is unpredictable. Therefore, risk factors for injuries related to professional horse racing need to be investigated. We conducted a study to determine whether body mass index (BMI) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels are associated with professional horse racing-related injuries. METHODS: A baseline healthy survey of 546 male grooms and exercise riders aged 40-70 yr working at Miho Training Center, the largest racing-horse training facility in Japan, was performed in May 2003. A total of 93

Ethological resolution of behavioral topography and D2-like vs. D1-like agonist responses in congenic D4 dopamine receptor "knockouts": identification of D4:D1-like interactions.

To clarify the involvement of dopamine D4 receptors in behavioral regulation, the phenotypic ethogram of congenic D4 "knockout" mice was studied in terms of (i) course of exploration and habituation, and (ii) topographical responsiveness to the selective D2-like agonist RU 24213 and the selective D1-like agonists A 68930, SK&F 83959 and SK&F 83822. Congenic D4 knockouts were characterized by a small reduction in exploratory sniffing with delayed habituation of sifting. The magnitude and topographical specificity of these effects indicated that any functional role for D4 receptors in explorator

Sequential super-stereotypy of an instinctive fixed action pattern in hyper-dopaminergic mutant mice: a model of obsessive compulsive disorder and Tourette's.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sequential stereotypy of behavioral patterns (sequential super-stereotypy) in Tourette's syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is thought to involve dysfunction in nigrostriatal dopamine systems. In sequential super-stereotypy, patients become trapped in overly rigid sequential patterns of action, language, or thought. Some instinctive behavioral patterns of animals, such as the syntactic grooming chain pattern of rodents, have sufficiently complex and stereotyped serial structure to detect potential production of overly-rigid sequential patterns. A syntactic g

Behavioral responses of long-term hyperprolactinaemic rats.

Rats with long-term endogenous hyperprolactinaemia induced by pituitary homografts under the kidney capsule displayed an enhancement of amphetamine- and apomorphine-induced stereotypy, a facilitated acquisition of active avoidance behavior and a decreased responsiveness to electrical footshock. However, no difference between homografted and sham-operated rats was observed with respect to grooming behavior. It is concluded that at least two processes occur during prolonged hyperprolactinaemia, i.e. development of tolerance to prolactin with respect to enhanced grooming activity and of supersens

Fending for Thyself: Honey Bees From Ethiopia Inflict Physical Damage on Varroa destructor.

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor and its associated viruses threaten the health of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.). Yet, African populations survive mite infestations without miticide treatment largely due to social immunity behaviors. However, little is known about these defense mechanisms in A. m. simensis populations from the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Therefore, this study investigated grooming and hygienic behaviors across lowland, midland, and highland areas during the wet and dry seasons in this region. Grooming behavior was quantified by measuring adult mite infestation rates, da

Modulation by sudden darkness of apomorphine-induced behavioral responses.

Sudden darkness increases motor activity and decreases anxiety. In the present study, we focused on the role of dopaminergic mechanisms involved in the effects of sudden darkness. The influence of sudden darkness on the behavioral effects of low (0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg) and high (0.25, 0.45 and 0.6 mg/kg) doses of apomorphine (APO) was tested. We assayed the effects of low APO doses on yawning-penile erection syndrome (YES; 0.05 and 0.1 mg/kg) and on motor activity (0.05 mg/kg), and the effects of high APO doses on motor activity (0.25 mg/kg) and stereotyped behavior (0.45 mg/kg and 0.6 mg/kg). Association between stereotypic behavior and polydipsia in chronic schizophrenic patients.

We assessed temporal associations between polydipsia and motor stereotypies in chronic schizophrenia. Subjects included: (a) a polydipsic patient with marked stereotypies; (b) a polydipsic patient with no history of stereotypy; (c) a nonpolydipsic patient. Stereotyped grooming and pacing were significantly associated with drinking for polydipsic patients only (polydipsic patients evidenced a 87% and 66% concordance between excessive grooming and drinking versus 12% in the control). Our findings provide the first empirical demonstration that polydipsia is temporally associated with other repeti

Effects of the Partial M1 Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptor Agonist CDD-0102A on Stereotyped Motor Behaviors and Reversal Learning in the BTBR Mouse Model of Autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a set of neurodevelopmental disorders marked by a lack of social interaction, restrictive interests, and repetitive behaviors. There is a paucity of pharmacological treatments to reduce core ASD symptoms. Various lines of evidence indicate that reduced brain muscarinic cholinergic receptor activity may contribute to an ASD phenotype. METHODS: The present experiments examined whether the partial M1 muscarinic receptor agonist, 5-(3-ethyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine hydrochloride (CDD-0102A), alleviates behavioral flexibilit

Effect of D1 and D2 agonists in primates withdrawn from long-term treatment with haloperidol: the potential role of dopamine D1 receptors in dyskinesia.

The effects of dopamine (DA) D1 and D2 receptor agonists were evaluated in eight Cebus apella monkeys. The monkeys had previously received haloperidol for 2 years, and five of the monkeys had developed mild oral dyskinesia. SKF 81297 (a full D1 agonist) induced marked oral hyperkinesia, consisting of tongue protrusions and licking or chewing movements, most pronounced in the monkeys with pre-existing oral dyskinesia. SKF 38393 and SKF 75670 (partial D1 agonists) also induced some oral dyskinesia, but to a lesser extent than SKF 81297, and with few licking movements. The partial D1 agonists, bu

Mechanisms of Change in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is highly efficacious for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), not all patients benefit, and mechanisms underlying response remain unknown. In this first report of the mechanisms underlying improvement with CBT for BDD, we examined whether cognitive (maladaptive beliefs, perfectionism, schemas) and behavioral (checking, grooming, avoidance behaviors) changes mediate the effect of CBT on BDD symptom reduction. Forty-five participants with BDD who enrolled in a CBT for BDD treatment development study were included in two sets of analyses: (1) between-subjec
