More is Not Always Better in Hair Growth Factors. Epidermal Growth Factor: Hair Growth Factor Involved in Alopecia Areata Pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is the second most frequent nonscarring alopecia after androgenetic alopecia; the trigger factor induces changes in the growth plate of hair bulb and leads to premature termination of anagen phase. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) can be the key molecule that participates in initiation and suppression of normal hair growth cycle. The role of EGF in the pathogenesis of AA is still uncertain. AIM OF THE WORK: This aim is to estimate the serum level of EGF in patients with AA trying to detect its role in AA pathogenesis and correlate it with the disease severity. S

Identification of epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor-alpha, and epidermal growth factor receptor in surgically induced endometriosis in rats.

The present immunohistochemical studies used polyclonal antibodies specific to epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), and monoclonal antibodies to the extracellular binding domain of EGF receptor to elucidate their presence and cellular distribution in surgically induced endometriosis in the rat. Uterine segments were implanted in the mesenteric region adjacent to a blood vessel for a period of 4-6 weeks. During operative reexploration, the implanted tissues were intact, morphologically similar to the controls, and consisted of a cyst containing clear flui

Heparin Binding Epidermal Growth Factor-Like Growth Factor Heals Chronic Tympanic Membrane Perforations With Advantage Over Fibroblast Growth Factor 2 and Epidermal Growth Factor in an Animal Model.

HYPOTHESIS: That heparin binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) heals chronic tympanic membrane (TM) perforations at higher rates than fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) in an animal model. BACKGROUND: A nonsurgical treatment for chronic TM perforation would benefit those unable to access surgery or those unable to have surgery, as well as reducing the cost of tympanoplasty. Growth factor (GF) treatments have been reported in the literature with variable success with the lack of a suitable animal providing a major obstacle. METHODS: The G

C-type natriuretic peptide as mediator of growth in the absence of growth hormone: Unraveling the mystery of the growth without GH syndrome.

Children with craniopharyngioma exhibit a notably high incidence of normal-accelerated growth before and/or after neurosurgery/hypophysectomy despite confirmed panhypopituitarism, this constituting what is known as the growth without GH syndrome, which, to date, remains an unsolved mystery. Most cases involve suprasellar tumor extension, suggesting a factor intrinsic to tumor localization apart from neurosurgical sequelae alone. Patients need mineralocorticoid therapy post surgery, at least until GH replacement therapy is initiated, implying elevated natriuretic peptides inducing secondary min

Long-Acting Growth Hormone Versus Daily Growth Hormone for Growth Hormone Deficiency Patients: A Network Meta-Analysis of Clinical Trials.

INTRODUCTION: Current guidelines recognize daily recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) as standard care and long-acting growth hormone (LAGH) as an alternative for paediatric growth hormone deficiency (CHD). In this network meta-analysis (NMA), we updated the evidence to evaluate comparative efficacy and safety of multiple dosing nodes of LAGH versus daily somatropin. METHODS: Major databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central, Scopus, Web of Science, and http://ClinicalTrials.Gov, were searched through April 2026 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs)in children with CHD. Rearing Mozambique tilapia in tidally-changing salinities: Effects on growth and the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor I axis.

The growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis plays a central role in the regulation of growth in teleosts and has been shown to be affected by acclimation salinity. This study was aimed at characterizing the effects of rearing tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, in a tidally-changing salinity on the GH/IGF axis and growth. Tilapia were raised in fresh water (FW), seawater (SW), or in a tidally-changing environment, in which salinity is switched between FW (TF) and SW (TS) every 6h, for 4months. Growth was measured over all time points recorded and fish reared in a tidally-changi

Circulating levels of growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-I and prolactin in normal, growth retarded and anencephalic human fetuses.

We measured growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), and both total and glycosylated prolactin (PRL) levels in 131 blood samples obtained by cordocentesis in normal and abnormal fetuses from 19 to 40 weeks of gestation. In normal fetuses, IGF-I and PRL levels showed a positive correlation and GH a negative correlation with gestational age. A negative relation between GH and IGF-I levels was observed, while PRL did not show any correlation with both GH and IGF-I concentrations. IGF-I increased from 5.6 +/- 3 (at 19-22 weeks) to 10.7 +/- 5 nmol/l at term; GH decreased from 31 +

Post-Loss Growth (PLG) in bereavement: The missing link in posttraumatic growth.

Posttraumatic growth in the bereaved, representing a clinically useful and evidence-based construct, refers to those dimensions of growth arising from the death of another, just as it might arise from exposure to any other highly stressful event. However, this neglects unique expressions of growth deriving from the pre- and post-death relationship of the survivor to the deceased. We propose the term Post-Loss Growth (PLG) to highlight how this relational component influences the "self" of the bereaved in a way that is not reducible to the traumatic experience of the death per se. The Two-Track

Identification of growth-promoting microorganisms and their impact on chickpea growth in tropical regions.

The study of plant growth-promoting microorganisms is crucial for developing new agricultural strategies aimed at increasing productivity and resilience in semi-arid environments, where water scarcity and soil degradation pose critical challenges. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and relate the effects of inoculation of growth-promoting or nodulating microorganisms in isolates from chickpea roots grown in a semiarid region. The nodules were washed with distilled water, 95% ethanol and 3% NaClO. They were then crushed, and the resulting suspension was diluted six times in saline solution

Recent Advances in the Role of Fibroblast Growth Factors in Hair Follicle Growth.

Hair follicles are essential to hair formation and cyclic regeneration, experiencing growth and degeneration, and quiescence phases involving complex signaling pathways. Among these, fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) play a critical role in follicular morphogenesis, but the role of FGF receptor signaling in hair follicle development remains underexplored. Current treatments for hair loss, such as medical, surgical, light-based, and nutraceutical interventions, are often expensive, require long-term commitment, and are associated with substantial side effects. This review discusses the mechanism

Rheb1 is required for limb growth through regulating chondrogenesis in growth plate.

Ras homology enriched in the brain (Rheb) is well established as a critical regulator of cell proliferation and differentiation in response to growth factors and nutrients. However, the role of Rheb1 in limb development remains unknown. Here, we found that Rheb1 was dynamically expressed during the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes in the growth plate. Given that Prrx1+ limb-bud-like mesenchymal cells are the source of limb chondrocytes and are essential for endochondral ossification, we conditionally deleted Rheb1 using Prrx1-Cre and found a limb dwarfism in Prrx1-Cre; Rheb1fl

Supersulfides support bone growth by promoting chondrocyte proliferation in the growth plates.

OBJECTIVES: While chondrocytes have mitochondria, they receive little O2 from the bloodstream. Sulfur respiration, an essential energy production system in mitochondria, uses supersulfides instead of O2. Supersulfides are inorganic and organic sulfides with catenated sulfur atoms and are primarily produced by cysteinyl tRNA synthetase-2 (CARS2). Here, we investigated the role of supersulfides in chondrocyte proliferation and bone growth driven by growth plate chondrocyte proliferation. METHODS: We examined the effects of NaHS, an HS-/H2S donor, and cystine, the cellular source of cysteine, on

Human Growth and Growth Hormone: From Antiquity to the Recominant Age to the Future.

Since antiquity Man has been fascinated by the variations in human (and animal) growth. Stories and art abound about giants and little people. Modern genetics have solved some of etiologies at both extremes of growth. Serious study began with the pathophysiology of acromegaly followed by early attempts at treatment culminating in modern endoscopic surgery and multiple pharmacologic agents. Virtually at the same time experiments with the removal of the pituitary from laboratory animals noted the slowing or stopping of linear growth and then over a few decades the extraction and purification of
