Diversity and clinical correlations of SARS-CoV-2 variant during the introduction of the Delta variant in Guatemala.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genomic surveillance is crucial for understanding viral evolution and guiding public health responses. However, many countries, particularly in Central America, have limited sequencing capacity, resulting in scarce and delayed data. This study addresses this gap by analysing 320 SARS-CoV-2 genomes sequenced from a major diagnostic centre in Guatemala City, Guatemala, between April and August 2021. Clade 21J (Delta) was predominant (46.2%), followed by 19B (29.4%) and 20J (Gamma, 6.6%). The most reported symptoms were cough, headache,

Preparing for the tiny predators: Community readiness and perceptions of copepod-based dengue control in eastern guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Dengue remains a persistent public health challenge in eastern Guatemala, particularly in communities where irregular water supply, domestic water storage, and limited sanitation infrastructure create favorable conditions for Aedes aegypti proliferation. As concerns increase about the sustainability of chemical vector control, biological approaches such as the use of predatory copepods are receiving renewed attention. However, successful implementation depends not only on biological efficacy, but also on community awareness, acceptance, and willingness to adopt unfamiliar control m

Double burden of malnutrition in Guatemala: co-existence of childhood stunting and overweight and obesity within the household.

This paper defines the double burden of malnutrition as occurring when over- and undernutrition coexist within a household. It is most common in countries undergoing the nutrition transition where cheap and accessible food is often of poor quality. This brief narrative review examines four cycles of reports from the Epidemiological Health and Nutrition Surveillance System (SIVESNU, Spanish acronym) in Guatemala between 2015-2018/19, examining the following indicators: overall double burden of stunting among children aged ≤59 months and overweight or obesity among women aged 15-49 years in the

Feasibility of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for Low Back Pain in Rural Chimaltenango, Guatemala: A Pilot Study.

Background Low back pain (LBP) is a global health issue that primarily affects underserved communities with limited access to healthcare. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) offers non-pharmacological, hands-on interventions that align with its core principle of holistic care. However, little is known about the feasibility and perception of OMT in rural Chimaltenango, Guatemala. This pilot study assesses the feasibility, effectiveness, and participant perception of osteopathic principles in managing LBP complaints. Methods Adult participants experiencing LBP were recruited by the research

An exploratory study of client and provider experience and perceptions of facility-based childbirth care in Quiché, Guatemala.

INTRODUCTION: Respectful maternity care (RMC) is fundamental to women's and families' experience of care and their decision about where to give birth. Studies from multiple countries describe the mistreatment of women during facility-based childbirth, though only a small number of studies from Guatemala have been published. Less information is available on women's negative and positive experiences of childbirth care and health workers' perceptions and experiences of providing maternity care. METHODS: As part of a program implemented in the Western Highlands of Guatemala to improve quality of

Incidence and etiology of infectious diarrhea from a facility-based surveillance system in Guatemala, 2008-2012.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, yet incidence and etiology data are limited. We conducted laboratory-based diarrhea surveillance in Guatemala. METHODS: A diarrhea case was defined as ≥3 loose stools in a 24-h period in a person presenting to the surveillance facilities. Epidemiologic data and stool specimens were collected. Specimens were tested for bacterial, parasitic, and viral pathogens. Yearly incidence was adjusted for healthcare seeking behaviors determined from a household survey conducted in the surveillance catchment area. RESULTS: From November 20

Genetic Evidence of Importation of Drug-Resistant Plasmodium falciparum to Guatemala from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Imported malaria threatens control and elimination efforts in countries that have low rates of transmission. In 2010, an outbreak of Plasmodium falciparum malaria was reported among United Nations peacekeeping soldiers from Guatemala who had recently returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Epidemiologic evidence suggested that the soldiers were infected in the DRC, but local transmission could not be ruled out in all cases. We used population genetic analyses of neutral microsatellites to determine the outbreak source. Genetic relatedness was compared among parasites found in

Knowledge of HIV transmission and condom use among HIV-positive heterosexual men and women in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Guatemala among the general population is 0.79%, and 94% of transmission is directly related to sexual contact. Studies have been conducted on high- prevalence HIV-positive populations (men who have sex with men, commercial sex workers and prisoners). Heterosexual transmission has gained importance in the epidemic in Central America. To our knowledge, no study addressing knowledge of mechanisms of HIV transmission and condom use has been done on HIV-positive heterosexual men and women. METHODS: A closed-ended structured interview that addressed knowle

Diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Guatemala using a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay and the Smartcycler.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay has been reported for the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Real-time (RT) PCR offers several advantages over traditional PCR, including faster processing time and decreased risk of contamination. Enhanced portability is another benefit that expands the applicability of the assay. A portable RT-PCR assay was transported from the United States to Guatemala for comparison with traditional diagnostic modalities. With the clinical diagnosis of CL as the gold standard, RT-PCR was positive in 86% (37 of 43) versus 53% (20 of 38) for microscopy and 7

Comparison of periodontal disease status of adults in two untreated indigenous populations of Guatemala, Central America.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the periodontal disease levels of two distinct indigenous populations of Guatemala, Central America, to determine whether differences exist. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional studies were performed in adults from the communities of San Juan La Laguna, SJLL (n = 125) and Tzununa (n = 54). In both cases, full-mouth pocket probing depths (PPDs) and clinical attachment levels (CALs) were measured by a single examiner, and the same examiner was employed in both studies. Recession at each site was derived from PPD and CAL measures. RESULTS: Tooth number did not differ sig

Seasonal occurrence of Simulium ochraceum, the principal vector of Onchocerca volvulus in the southeastern endemic area of Guatemala.

Investigation of the seasonal occurrence of Simulium ochraceum, the principal vector of the Guatemalan strain of Onchocerca volvulus, were made from August 1978 until January 1980 in the upper reaches of the two main rivers of endemic onchocerciasis in Escuintla, Guatemala. The results showed that in the late dry season S. ochraceum larvae were restricted to permanent streams at intermediate altitudes. During the rainy season, though, the preimaginal sites of this black fly extended to the upper reaches of the numerous small intermittent streams due to partial subterranean flows. Seasonal occu

Host Country Views of Short-Term Medical Missions: Community-Based Research in Ghana, Uganda, and Guatemala.

Background: Growing attention to the proliferation of short-term medical missions (STMMs) in the Global South has increasingly taken the form of critiques of inadequately prepared volunteers, lack of community control and continuity. In response, scholars and practitioners in high-income countries have created guidelines for best practices. These have rarely incorporated the views of host community members and leaders. While research has begun to address what host countries want from STMMs, these projects have also been carried out almost exclusively by scholars from the Global North. Objectiv

Changing Attitudes and Motivations Around Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination Within an Agricultural Community in Southwest Guatemala.

Guatemala has one of the lowest coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination rates in the Americas, with rural communities experiencing disproportionately low coverage. A 2021-2022 vaccine knowledge and behaviors survey of households in a rural community in southwest Guatemala revealed that access was a significant barrier, particularly among women and those who did not work outside the home. For the present study, a follow-up survey was conducted in 2023 to assess changes in vaccine access, hesitancy, and motivations. Both surveys were completed by 199 people. Among those eligible for vaccination at

Establishing a sustainable urology program in northern Guatemala: an implementation report from El Petén (2024-2025).

PURPOSE: Subspecialty surgical care is limited in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) attempt to bridge this gap through short-term medical trips (SMTs), but sustainability remains challenging. This report describes establishing a urology program in El Petén, Guatemala's largest region, as a model for sustainable subspecialty surgical care in LMICs. METHODS: This retrospective, single-institution review evaluated the Aid Via Action Inc. (AVA) urology program at Hospital Nacional de San Benito (HNSB), a departmental public hospital in El Petén, Guatem

Examining the Association Between Violence and PrEP Use Among Indigenous Gay and Bisexual Men in Guatemala.

Indigenous gay and bisexual men (GBM) in Guatemala face high rates of violence and HIV. This study seeks to understand the relationship between exposure to different forms of violence and PrEP use to inform PrEP programming in Guatemala. From June 2023- May 2024, two partner organizations administered a cross-sectional questionnaire to 395 Indigenous Guatemalan GBM. We examined the relationship between violence (physical, sexual, and police violence due to sexual orientation; forced migration and knowing someone missing, injured, or killed in the internal armed conflict; and intimate partner v

Training through trauma: A multivariate analysis of burnout and associated factors among physician trainees in Guatemala.

OBJECTIVE: Burnout is a pervasive occupational hazard in medicine, beginning early in training and linked to depression, suicide, medical errors, and attrition. While extensively studied in high-income countries, little is known from Latin America. Guatemala faces scarce mental health resources, social inequities, and limited residency regulation. This study aimed to characterize burnout, psychological distress, and moral injury among Guatemalan physicians in postgraduate medical training ("residents"). METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of residents in Guatemala (September-October

Airborne particulate matter exposure in male sugarcane workers at risk for chronic kidney disease in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: There is an international epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown cause (CKDu) in agricultural working populations. Particulate air pollution is a likely contributing factor in populations at risk for CKDu, but there is little personal breathing zone data for these workers. METHODS: We collected 1 to 3 personal breathing zone particulate matter <5 microns (PM5) gravimetric measurements in 143 male sugarcane harvesters over 2 seasons and concurrent ambient samples using personal sampling pumps and cyclone inlets as a sampling train. Due to very high concentrations observed du
