Posttraumatic stress and depressive symptomatology in a sample of battered women from South Africa.

This study investigated the incidence of depression, posttraumatic stress symptomatology, anger, and guilt in a sample of 40 battered women in a shelter. Analysis indicated that 63% of the 40 scored moderate to severe on depression, 59% manifested high posttraumatic stress symptoms, while 38.4% and 54.5% reported problems with anger and guilt, respectively. Frequency and severity of physical abuse were not correlated with depressive or posttraumatic stress symptomatology.

Symptoms predicting remission after divalproex augmentation with olanzapine in partially nonresponsive patients experiencing mixed bipolar I episode: a post-hoc analysis of a randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Rating scale items in a 6-week clinical trial of olanzapine versus placebo augmentation in patients with mixed bipolar disorder partially nonresponsive to ≥14 days of divalproex monotherapy were analyzed to characterize symptom patterns that could predict remission. At baseline, the two treatment groups were similar. FINDINGS: Factor analysis with Varimax rotation was performed post hoc on baseline items of the 21-Item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-21) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). Backwards-elimination logistic regression ascertained factors predictive of protocol

Brief report: mothers' long-term posttraumatic stress symptoms following a burn event of their child.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective longitudinal study examines the course of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in mothers of children with burns between 1 and 11 years after the burn event and the role of burn severity and feelings of guilt on this course. METHOD: Self-reported PTSS of 48 mothers were measured with the Impact of Event Scale. Guilt feelings were assessed during an in-depth interview 2 years after the burn event. Eleven years after the burn event, mothers marked their child's scars at the present time on a drawing. RESULTS: Over a period of 10 years, maternal PTSS decreased. Multi

Complexities of posttrauma caregiving: Partner depression, survivor PTSD symptoms, and caregiving appraisals.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the independent and interactive associations of romantic partners' depression symptoms and perceptions of traumatic injury survivor posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) with their caregiving appraisals (i.e., perceived caregiving costs and rewards). METHOD: Romantic partners of recent traumatic injury survivors (N = 513; Mage = 29.72; 63.9% male) completed self- and collateral-reports assessing their depression symptoms, caregiving appraisals, and perceptions of trauma survivor PTSS. Confirmatory factor analysis identified latent caregiving appraisal dimensions

[Individual virtual reality trigger exposure as an add-on in the treatment of komplex PTSD - A case study].

We present the case of a patient who, as a result of multiple traumatic experiences during his military deployments and associated moral injuries, suffered from complex post-traumatic stress disorder, alienation, increased aggression potential and, primarily, intense feelings of guilt. He participated in a feasibility and acceptance study on individualised virtual reality trigger exposure in order to work with these feelings of guilt. The advantages and disadvantages of this adjuvant therapeutic approach are subsequently discussed.

Suicide attempts correlate with delusional content in major depression.

A retrospective analysis of all medically serious suicide attempts made by 45 patients hospitalized consecutively at the Payne Whitney Clinic with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III discharge diagnosis of unipolar major depression recurrent with psychotic features was undertaken. Patients with delusions of persecution in combination with delusions of guilt were significantly more likely to make medically serious suicide attempts than patients with single categories of delusions or combinations other than guilt and persecution.

Sexual and aggressive motives in sexually aggressive college males.

The relative contributions to sexual aggression of general sexual and aggressive motives and their respective inhibitory factors were compared. One hundred forty-three university males responded to self-report measures of sexual and aggressive drives, sex and hostility guilt, social desirability response bias, and history of coercive sexuality. With the effects of social desirability controlled, the only predictor of sexual aggression was Sex Guilt, which predicted level of force used but not intimacy of the sexual act obtained.

The impact of posttraumatic stress disorder on dysfunctional implicit and explicit emotions among women with borderline personality disorder.

A comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) aggravates symptoms, course of illness and social functioning of persons with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it is largely unclear how this effect is mediated. In 60 women with BPD of whom 23 had a comorbid current PTSD we investigated whether dysfunctional explicit and implicit emotions were associated with a comorbid PTSD. Shame and guilt proneness, anxiety, anger-hostility, and general psychopathology were assessed by self-report measures. Implicit anxiety-related self-concept was measured using the Implicit Association Test.

Incentivized sadism: The impact of intrinsic and extrinsic reward on sadistic aggression.

In two studies (one correlational, one experimental; total N = 419), we tested whether dispositional sadism is related to the anticipation of experiencing pleasure (instead of guilt) during and after aggressing, and whether this anticipation motivates aggressive behavior. We also tested whether individuals higher in sadism are less likely to use dissonance reduction strategies for behaving aggressively (and feeling pleasure while doing so). Study 1 looked at how dispositional sadism is related to the anticipation of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards of behaving aggressively. Study 2 looked at wh

Gender Differences in Self-Conscious Emotions and Motivation to Quit Gambling.

Considerable gender differences have been previously noted in the prevalence, etiology, and clinical features of problem gambling. While differences in affective states between men and women in particular, may explain differential experiences in the process of gambling, the role of affect in motivations for quitting gambling and recovery has not been thoroughly explored. The aim of this study was to examine gender differences within a sample of problem gamblers motivated to quit with or without formal treatment, and further, to explore the interactions between gender, shame and guilt-proneness

A simulation-based network analysis of intervention targets for comorbid symptoms of depression and anxiety in Chinese healthcare workers in the post-dynamic zero-COVID policy era.

BACKGROUND: After the official end of the dynamic zero-COVID policy in China, healthcare workers continued to heavy workloads and psychological stress. In this new phase, concerns related to work and family, rather than infection, may have become new sources of psychological issues such as depression and anxiety among healthcare workers, leading to new patterns of comorbidity. However, few studies have addressed these issues. To fill this gap, this study used network analysis to examine new features and mechanisms of comorbidity between depression and anxiety symptoms, and simulated symptom-sp

Exploring Pathways and Obstacles to Well-Being in Victims of Terrorism: A Qualitative Approach.

On March 11, 2004, Madrid suffered one of the worst terrorist attacks in the history of Spain, leaving more than 190 dead and 2,000 injured. For years, the psychological consequences of the attacks have been studied; however, its long-term effects on symptomatology and especially on well-being remains unknown. This study aims to explore, through a qualitative approach, pathways and obstacles to the well-being of those affected directly or indirectly by the attacks of March 11 in Madrid. Two focus groups were held, one for indirect victims and one for direct victims. Subsequently, a thematic an

Developing a model of guilty plea decision-making: Fuzzy-trace theory, gist, and categorical boundaries.

OBJECTIVES: To date, most research on plea bargaining has used some form of the shadow of the trial (SOT) model to frame defendant decisions. In this research, we proposed and tested a new conceptual model of plea decision-making, based on fuzzy-trace theory (FTT), for the context in which a nondetained, guilty defendant chooses between a guilty plea or trial, where both the plea and potential trial sentence entail incarceration. HYPOTHESES: We predicted that plea decisions would be affected by (a) meaningful, categorical changes in conviction probability (e.g., low to moderate, moderate to h

Psychological distress among women undergoing in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer: A cross-sectional and longitudinal network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Women undergoing in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) treatment were generally found to experience varying degrees of psychological distress across the treatment. Existing studies focused on total scores and diagnostic thresholds to characterize the symptoms' severity, which might hinder scientific progress in understanding and treating psychological distress. AIMS: We aimed to investigate (a) how depression and anxiety symptoms are interconnected within a network, and (b) the changes of the network (symptom connections and network centralities) over time, in women unde

The effects of witnessing violence.

Mental health nurses in the UK are 10 times more likely to be assaulted than general nurses, but evidence on the effects of staff witnessing violence is lacking. After researching the effects on ten mental health nurses who had witnessed an episode of physical violence in the previous 6 months, David Jeffrey and Pauline Fuller reported their research findings in Mental Health Practice. The authors found that participants grappled with fear, guilt and anger, leaving them to seek resolution on five themes relating to personal and professional guilt.

Typology of parents with alcohol consumption: insights from cluster analysis on psychopathology and parenting experiences.

BACKGROUND: Studies have highlighted the negative impact of parental drinking on offspring, but the perception of drinking parents about their parenting role remains poorly explored. This study assessed the parental sense of competence among individuals with alcohol consumption and examined the relationship with parental guilt, burnout, and psychopathological symptoms. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: The sample was composed of 759 individuals who had at least one child aged below 18 living at home. Participants answered questionnaires measuring alcohol consumption, parental sense of competence, p

Consequences of daily self-weighing: a pilot study in higher-weight women with a history of breast cancer.

Self-monitoring weight is commonly recommended for higher-weight women with a history of breast cancer, despite evidence demonstrating potentially negative psychological consequences of frequent self-weighing. The extent to which higher-weight women with breast cancer experience emotional and behavioral consequences in response to daily self-weighing is unknown. In this pilot study, women (n = 51) with a history of breast cancer in a behavioral weight management program completed a weeklong daily diary protocol. Participants were asked to self-weigh every morning and report on subsequent weigh

Examining Bi-directional links between distinct affect states and tobacco lapse during a cessation attempt.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models of addiction highlight the bi-directional links of certain distinct affect states and tobacco lapse, but to date, few studies have examined bi-directional associations, instead examining associations with global affect measures (e.g., negative affect versus feelings of guilt). The present study examines bi-directional associations among 23 distinct affect states with individuals who tobacco lapse among use attempting to quit in an observational study. Shame predicts revictimization in victims of childhood violence: A prospective study of a general Norwegian population sample.

OBJECTIVE: Victims of childhood violence often experience new victimization in adult life. However, risk factors for such revictimization are poorly understood. In this longitudinal study, we investigated whether violence-related shame and guilt were associated with revictimization. METHOD: Young adults (age = 17-35) exposed to childhood violence (n = 505) were selected from a (Country) population study of 6,589 persons (Wave 1), and reinterviewed by telephone 12-18 months later (Wave 2). Wave 1 measures included shame, guilt, social support, posttraumatic stress, and binge drinking frequency

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a preliminary study comparing different trauma and clinical populations on types of shame coping style and levels of state shame and guilt. METHODS: A mixed independent groups/correlational design was employed. Participants were recruited by convenience sampling of 3 clinical populations-complex trauma (n = 65), dissociative identity disorder (DID; n = 20), and general mental health (n = 41)-and a control group of healthy volunteers (n = 125).
