The influence of lower limb muscle activity on postural stabilisation during landing in female artistic gymnasts.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of lower limb muscle activity and postural stabilisation during landings after various motor tasks. Seventeen gymnasts (aged 13.7 ± 2.0 years) performed landings after four tasks: drop landing, forward somersault, backward somersault, backward acrobatic series. Postural stabilisation during landing was assessed using an inertial sensor placed on the lumbar spine, from which data was used to determine the dynamic stability index and time to stabilisation. Muscle activity was assessed using surface electromyography in six lower limb muscles. The

A case study on the classification of somersault jumping motion characteristics in trampoline gymnasts using the TJ-index.

The purpose of this study was to propose the TJ-index, which uses deflection distance and contact time as variables, as an index of somersault jumps in trampoline competitions, and to clarify the characteristics of the jumping motion of trampoline gymnasts as a case study. Ten participants, ranging from elite trampoline gymnasts to those at the national competition level, performed 10 consecutive backward somersaults and forward somersault half-twists in alternating sequence. A strong positive correlation was observed between the TJ-index and time of flight (r = 0.98, p < 0.01). The relationsh

Effect of Kegel Exercises on Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Young Gymnasts: A Prospective Cohort Study.

IMPORTANCE: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) have been shown to exist in young athletes. The use of pelvic floor muscle training as a preventive strategy at an early age may be useful to avoid possible pelvic floor dysfunction in the future. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to describe LUTS in underaged gymnasts. We also aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12-week Kegel exercise intervention for LUTS and urinary incontinence (UI) and their relationship to bother. STUDY DESIGN: A quasi-experimental (nonrandomized, noncontrolled) pre-post study was conducted. Nineteen gymnasts with a mea

Peak sagittal plane spine kinematics in female gymnasts with and without a history of low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Female gymnasts have a greater prevalence of back pain compared to other female athletes. There is little evidence that female artistic gymnasts with and without back pain demonstrate different movement patterns during gymnastics skills. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in back movements during back walkovers and back handsprings among female artistic gymnasts. METHODS: Female artistic gymnasts (8-18 years old) with and without back pain wore inertial sensors on their torso, arms, and legs while performing back walkovers (N = 14) and back handsp

Gymnastic-Based Movement Therapy for Children With Neurodevelopmental Disabilities: Results From a Pilot Feasibility Study.

Background: Developmental and behavioral issues often limit the participation of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) in community-based activities with their peers, which decreases opportunities for their social learning and development. Parents of children with NDD seek out programs that address physical and psychosocial development. Several studies already support the positive effects for the child to attend physical activity programs (PAPs). However, these studies are highly prone to biases and Hawthorne effect. In the planning stage of a large prospective study to assess th

Proximal Radial Head Fractures in Young Gymnasts: A Case Series of Newly Described Overuse Injuries.

We report a case series of unilateral Salter-Harris IV fractures of the proximal radial heads in young female gymnasts. To date, there are no previous reports of such injuries in gymnastics. In all 3 athletes, no significant injury preceded presentation or diagnosis. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging showed fractures and associated bone marrow edema of the proximal radial head, respectively. All but 1 was treated nonoperatively with success. Given the lack of acute trauma, lack of large effusion, and good range of motion at presentation, these injuries are believed to be chronic in na

The General Weakness Syndrome Therapy (GymNAST) study: protocol for a cohort study on recovery on walking function.

INTRODUCTION: Critical illness myopathy (CIM) and polyneuropathy (CIP) are common complications of critical illness that frequently occur together. Both cause so called intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired muscle weakness. This weakness of limb muscles increases morbidity and delay rehabilitation and recovery of walking ability. Although full recovery has been reported people with severe weakness may take months to improve walking. Focused physical rehabilitation of people with ICU-acquired muscle weakness is therefore of great importance. However, although physical rehabilitation is common, det

Stress fractures of the medial malleolus--review of the literature and report of a 15-year-old elite gymnast.

Stress fracture of the medial malleolus is rare and not reported in children. We report a case of a 15-year-old elite gymnast with open physes sustaining a medial malleolar stress fracture. The patient was treated initially by rest and gradually returned to sport with full recovery. Two months later she developed a complete fracture of the medial malleolus of the same side. This was treated surgically by open reduction and internal fixation with a cancellous screw and soon after the operation she returned to full activities. Emphasis is given to the suspected mechanism which led to this unique

Wrist pain in a young gymnast: unusual radiographic findings and MRI evidence of growth plate injury.

A 10-yr-old gymnast, training well below the elite level, reported a 3-wk history of bilateral dorsal wrist pain. Physical examination and radiographic findings were consistent with stress injury to the distal radial growth plates. The patient's radiographs also displayed rare findings including cleft radial and ulnar epiphyses, as well as epiphyseal spur formation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated evidence of metaphyseal and epiphyseal ischemia of the growth plate. The patient responded well to conservative treatment, including ice, splinting, and activity modification. This case

Gymnasts exhibit higher bone mass than runners despite similar prevalence of amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea.

Female athletes exhibit a higher prevalence of exercise-associated amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea compared with nonathletic women, and both conditions are related to reduced bone mineral density (BMD), particularly at the spine. This study investigated bone mass and oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea in two groups of competitive female athletes with different skeletal loading patterns: gymnasts and runners. Bone mineral density (g/cm2) of the femoral neck, lumbar spine (L2-4), and whole body was assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (QDR-1000/W, Hologic Inc., Waltham, MA) in collegiate gymnas

Integration of coordination and kinetic analysis reveals mechanisms of upper limb joint loading and technique-specific strategies in female gymnastics.

This study aimed to identify differences in upper-limb coordination by integrating vector coding with joint kinetics across three round-off (RO) techniques to better explain potential injury mechanisms. Twelve female gymnasts performed six trials of each RO technique (Parallel, Reverse, T-shape). The kinematic and kinetic data were collected. All analyses focused on the contact phase of the second hand. Elbow and Wrist joint flexion/extension (EF/E-WF/E) and rotation (EROT-WROT) couplings were assessed using modified vector coding to determine coupling angle (CA) and variability (CAV). Elbow j

[The effect of medical gymnastics on the external respiratory function of patients with infectious-allergic bronchial asthma under ambulatory treatment].

A new treatment of bacterial asthma involving therapeutic exercise, massage and using a special respiration regulator improving bronchial permeability is proposed. The treatment was conducted in 118 patients aged 22-68 with 1-17-year history of asthma. The set of exercises proposed, especially in application of the regulator, improves external respiration, bronchial permeability, helps to reduce hyperventilation and arterial hypoxemia.

The Injured Shoulder in High-Level Male Gymnasts, Part 1: Epidemiology and Pathoanatomy of Surgically Treated Lesions.

BACKGROUND: Weightbearing and traction-suspension movements with the upper limbs put considerable demands upon the shoulder region of high-level gymnasts. The diagnosis of instability in these gymnasts may be difficult because voluntary inferior shoulder subluxation is part of their training and is needed to perform some acrobatic figures. PURPOSE: To (1) assess the epidemiology of shoulder lesions requiring surgery, (2) describe the types of injuries and assess which maneuvers and equipment put the gymnast most at risk, and (3) present a pathoanatomic classification of the injured shoulder i
