The initiation of a hand grip is delayed by silently reading an incompatible syllable.

The movements of phonation structures (e.g., tongue) have been shown to facilitate compatible hand movements. For example, reaction time (RT) of precision and power hand grips (made with tips of thumb and finger vs. whole hand) are shortened with the production of syllables that share similar action features (e.g., employing the proximal vs. dorsal portion of the tongue, respectively). This effect is coined the articulation-grip correspondence (AGC) effect. However, it is not known if the AGC effect is due to action facilitation vs. interference, and if such facilitation/ interference is due t

A fist bump in a political meeting? The influence of social context on affordance selection.

Historically, understanding human cognition such as action processing has been a challenging issue in cognitive neuropsychology and the more we know about cognition, the more we shape it as a complex, multi-determined phenomenon that is embedded in a social context. The present study aimed at understanding how the social context could influence affordance selection. We hypothesized that affordance selection would be modulated by social context and that a given hand configuration would be considered appropriate or not, as a function of the presence or absence of social context. [Effect of a single proximal interphalangeal Joint Fusion of the Index, Middle or Ring Finger on the Grip and Finger Force and Load Distribution in the Hand].

BACKGROUND: Due to the functional coupling of adjacent finger joints and the quadriga effect, arthrodesis of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) can be assumed to lead to a different grip pattern resulting in altered force distribution of the hand. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Ten patients with isolated arthrodesis of the PIPJ due to posttraumatic osteoarthritis (4×PIPJ II, 4×PIPJ III, 2×PIPJ IV) were assessed 59 (17-121) months postoperatively on average. The angle of arthrodesis was assessed by radiographs. Grip force and load distribution of both hands were measured by manugraphy using 3 dif

[Neurofibroma in Children hand - Case Report and Literature Review].

Neurofibromas rarely occur before the age of 7 in children. They are a rarity on the hand, especially if they are accompanied by sensory disturbances and impairment of the gripping function. We report on a 9-year-old girl with symptomatic neurofibroma of the third and fourth ray of the right palm.

Muscular and postural synergies of the human hand.

Because humans have limited ability to independently control the many joints of the hand, a wide variety of hand shapes can be characterized as a weighted combination of just two or three main patterns of covariation in joint rotations, or "postural synergies." The present study sought to align muscle synergies with these main postural synergies and to describe the form of membership of motor units in these postural/muscle synergies. Seventeen joint angles and the electromyographic (EMG) activities of several hand muscles (both intrinsic and extrinsic muscles) were recorded while human subject

Neural control of on-line guidance of hand reaching movements.

Orienting one's gaze towards a peripheral target is usually composed of a hypometric primary saccade followed by a secondary 'corrective saccade' triggered automatically (without conscious perception) by the retinal error at the end of the primary saccade and characterised by a short latency. Due to visual suppression during the saccade, the artificial introduction of a random small target jump during that short period remains undetected and triggers after the end of the primary saccade a normal 'corrective saccade'. As a result this procedure simulates an error in the planning of the primary

Measuring handgrip strength in school children: inter-instrument reliability between Takei and Jamar.

The aim of this study was to determine inter-instrument reliability between Takei and Jamar dynamometers in school children. Fifty-six five grade participants aged eleven to twelve (n = 32 boys, n = 24 girls) performed handgrip strength test on two different occasions, with a 5-day gap between them, as test-retest. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed very large to almost perfect correlation between both devices (r = 0.76-0.91) which was graphically confirmed by Bland-Altman method. Test-retest also showed high reliability (ICC = 0.78-0.85) for Jamar and Takei. Trivial, nonsignificant di

Pressure Sensors for Measuring the Grip Pressure during Kendo Attacks: Assessment of Laterality and Evidence of the Five Phases of Attack.

In Kendo, there is no consensus as to which hand should produce more pressure when attacking the opponent with the bamboo sword, let alone how to teach the pressure distribution during coaching. There is the theory that a Kendo attack can be divided into five phases, which has not entered the coaching practice, either. The aim of this study was to measure the grip pressure during Kendo attacks, investigate the pressure distribution between the two hands, and find evidence for the existence of the alleged five attack phases. We instrumented a bamboo sword with grip pressure sensors and investig

Measures of Maximal Tactile Pressures during a Sustained Grasp Task Using a TactArray Device Have Satisfactory Reliability and Concurrent Validity in People with Stroke.

Sensor-based devices can record pressure or force over time during grasping and therefore offer a more comprehensive approach to quantifying grip strength during sustained contractions. The objectives of this study were to investigate the reliability and concurrent validity of measures of maximal tactile pressures and forces during a sustained grasp task using a TactArray device in people with stroke. Participants with stroke (n = 11) performed three trials of sustained maximal grasp over 8 s. Both hands were tested in within- and between-day sessions, with and without vision. Measures of maxi

Object motion influences feedforward motor responses during mechanical stopping of virtual projectiles: a preliminary study.

An important window into sensorimotor function is how humans interact and stop moving projectiles, such as stopping a door from closing shut or catching a ball. Previous studies have suggested that humans time the initiation and modulate the amplitude of their muscle activity based on the momentum of the approaching object. However, real-world experiments are constrained by laws of mechanics, which cannot be manipulated experimentally to probe the mechanisms of sensorimotor control and learning. An augmented-reality variant of such tasks allows for experimental manipulation of the relationship

Distributed yet compartmentalized neural dynamics of hand actions.

In this issue of Neuron,Natraj et al. (2021) demonstrate that finger and hand grasping movements are represented in the human fronto-parietal grasp network in a compartmentalized fashion. The movements are encoded in a distributed network that is preserved across various hand actions. The neural dynamics are specific to particular hand movements, leading to movement-specific submanifolds in the network.

A Layer Jamming Soft Glove for Hand Tremor Suppression.

Tremors are a common movement disorder that affects a person's life adversely. With various drawbacks of current treatment methods, there is a need for a mechanical solution. The authors present a soft orthosis based on layer jamming for the suppression of hand tremors. A vacuum supplied to the layer jamming elements which contain a stack of layers attached to the glove leads to increased stiffness in the glove, suppressing the tremor. The behavior of the tremor in a cohort of patients in Sri Lanka was studied and showed that the tremor's mean frequency was 5.05 ± 2.03 Hz. An existing analytic

Visually-guided Grip Selection for Soft-Hand Exoskeleton.

This paper presents a visually-guided grip selection based on the combination of object recognition and tactile feedback of a soft-hand exoskeleton intended for hand rehabilitation. A pre-trained neural network is used to recognize the object in front of the hand exoskeleton, which is then mapped to a suitable grip type. With the object cue, it actively assists users in performing different grip movements without calibration. In a pilot experiment, one healthy user completed four different grasp-and-move tasks repeatedly. All trials were completed within 25 seconds and only one out of 20 trial

Visualizing and Evaluating Finger Movement Using Combined Acceleration and Contact-Force Sensors: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

The 10-s grip and release is a method to evaluate hand dexterity. Current evaluations only visually determine the presence or absence of a disability, but experienced physicians may also make other diagnoses. In this study, we investigated a method for evaluating hand movement function by acquiring and analyzing fingertip data during a 10-s grip and release using a wearable sensor that can measure triaxial acceleration and strain. The subjects were two healthy females. The analysis was performed on the x-, y-, and z-axis data, and absolute acceleration and contact force of all fingertips. We c

Real time control and fabrication of a soft robotic glove by two parallel sensors with MBD approach.

Soft robotic gloves were designed to aid the rehabilitation process with hand pathologies and coordination of gripping exercises. The main issue in soft robotic actuators is to design a control strategy to overcome deformation in grasping exercises. In this paper, a new soft robotic actuator is developed to be protected against swell and deformation. This soft robotic glove is equipped with two sensors; these sensors make the robotic glove more intelligent. In the hardware, it was used two sensors in the new closed-loop method which include an air pressure sensor in the figure tip and a flex s

Design, Analysis, and Grasping Experiments of a Novel Soft Hand: Hybrid Actuator Using Shape Memory Alloy Actuators, Motors, and Electromagnets.

Soft hands based only on an actuator system using a motor, air compressor, or smart material show obvious shortcomings due to the characteristics of each actuator. In this article, to overcome the weaknesses of each actuator system, a novel soft hand with a hybrid actuator system is presented to improve the grasping capacity and complete complex tasks, as the individual actuators can complement each other. First, the structure and actuation system of the soft hand are presented. DC motors are used to output sufficient torque to bend the soft fingers. Shape memory alloy wires are used to rotate

A Prosthetic Gripper with Three Opposing Fingers Driven by a Hydraulic Actuator.

Electric prosthetic hands have problems of heavyweight, unsuitability for working near water, and driving noise. Although body-powered prosthetic hands solve these problems, they have operability and wearability problems related to a cable control system. In this paper, we report a prosthetic gripper with three opposing fingers driven by a hydraulic actuator without electrical components. The three fingers are controlled simultaneously by pushing the lever of an operating interface mounted on the user's upper arm on the affected side. The hydraulic actuator enables users to open the fingers wi
