Impacts of Unhealthy Behaviors on Mental Health among Public Health Residents: The PHRASI Study.

Unhealthy behaviors (UBs) can affect mental health. The most impactful of these are alcohol abuse, sedentary behavior, and sleep disturbances. Since these UBs are not well explored in medical residents, this study aims to overcome this gap, focusing on outcomes such as depression and anxiety. The Public Health Residents' Anonymous Survey in Italy (PHRASI) is a nationwide cross-sectional study based on an 88-item questionnaire. UBs were explored through validated questionnaires: the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-c (AUDIT-C), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ),

Psychosocial Determinants of Insomnia in Adolescents: Roles of Mental Health, Behavioral Health, and Social Environment.

UNLABELLED: The theoretical explanation of human problems is derived from the complex interplay of psychological, social, economic, political, and physical factors. AIMS: This study examined the roles of behavioral health (i.e., alcohol abuse and suicidality) and social environment (i.e., family support, school connectedness, and favorable neighborhood) and mental health [i.e., depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)] in predicting insomnia in adolescents in an ecological perspective. METHODS: Approximately 6445 high school students in Taiwan were administere

Evaluation of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) Tool for Integrated Behavioral Health in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Integrating behavioral health into primary care can improve care quality; however, most electronic health records are not designed to meet the needs of integrated teams. We worked with practices and behavioral health (BH) clinicians to design a suite of electronic health record tools to address these needs ("BH e-Suite"). The purpose of this article is to examine whether implementation of the BH e-Suite changes process of care, intermediate clinical outcomes, and patient experiences, and whether its use is acceptable to practice members and BH clinicians. METHODS: We conducted a c

Breast cancer knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors: a comparison of rural health and non-health workers.

The present study surveyed the current levels of knowledge and the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of health workers (mostly nurses) with respect to breast cancer and its early detection. In addition, health workers were compared with non-health workers to determine whether the two groups differed with respect to the above variables. The sample comprised 402 women sampled from work sites in a rural community in the Midwest. The results indicated that health workers (n = 96) scored very high on knowledge, had a very positive attitude toward the notion of early detection, and reported strong i

Multivariate evaluation of health attitudes and behaviors: development and validation of a method for health promotion research.

Many self-reported measures of health status, attitudes, and knowledge used by clinicians and researchers suffer from a variety of shortcomings, including limited empirical justification, excessive complexity, assessments of nonmodifiable historic or hereditary factors, and limited utility for public health program planning. The Health Attitudes and Behavior Scale is an instrument designed to overcome many of these shortcomings and direct public health professionals toward more efficacious interventions. One hundred sixty-four subjects responded to true-false and Likert scale items related to

Barriers beyond behavior: structural determinants of behavioral health treatment disparities among Hispanics in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Persistent disparities in substance use treatment access undermine efforts to achieve equitable public health outcomes in the United States. Hispanic populations, who report lower prevalence of substance use, nevertheless face systemic barriers to care. This study examines how socioeconomic status, insurance coverage, and ethnicity influence treatment utilization and perceived barriers, with attention to structural and sociocultural factors shaping disparities. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 56,705). Logi

Weight and Health Behavior Conversations in Adolescent Primary Care: A Qualitative Examination.

OBJECTIVE: Current clinical practice guidelines recommend that pediatricians screen all youth for overweight/obesity and provide or refer to treatment those with elevated weight status. Despite pediatricians' intentions to provide high-quality care, weight stigma and bias impede health care delivery. A shift in training is needed to optimize the experiences of adolescents with high weight status (body mass index ≥85 th percentile) during primary care visits. The present study sought adolescent, caregiver, and pediatrician perspectives on current practice, gaps in care, and needs for training t

Factors Influencing Health Behavior Adherence in Young and Middle-Aged Stroke Patients.

BACKGROUND: Health behavior adherence (HBA) is important for effective rehabilitation and secondary prevention after stroke. Young and middle-aged patients may face particular challenges in maintaining recommended health behaviors during hospitalization because of functional impairment, cognitive deficits, pain, and competing social or occupational responsibilities. However, factors associated with HBA in this population remain insufficiently characterized, and practical tools for the early identification of patients at risk of suboptimal adherence are limited. To identify factors associated w

Toward explainable AI (XAI) for mental health detection based on language behavior.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) in general and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in particular are paving the new way forward for the automated detection and prediction of mental health disorders among the population. Recent research in this area has prioritized predictive accuracy over model interpretability by relying on deep learning methods. However, prioritizing predictive accuracy over model interpretability can result in a lack of transparency in the decision-making process, which is critical in sensitive applications such as healthcare. There is thus a growing need for explain

Epigenetic and long-term effects of nicotine on biology, behavior, and health.

Tobacco and nicotine use are associated with disease susceptibility and progression. Health challenges associated with nicotine and smoking include developmental delays, addiction, mental health and behavioral changes, lung disease, cardiovascular disease, endocrine disorders, diabetes, immune system changes, and cancer. Increasing evidence suggests that nicotine-associated epigenetic changes may mediate or moderate the development and progression of a myriad of negative health outcomes. In addition, nicotine exposure may confer increased lifelong susceptibility to disease and mental health ch

[The reproductive health and sexual behavior of HIV-infected women: the review].

The increased access to effective anti-retroviral treatment (ART) has made HIV comparable to chronic disease in terms of life expectancy. The advances in scientific knowledge and, in particular, in management of HIV-infected pregnant woman have reduced the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The analysis of current research demonstrates that HIV has been a problem in terms of sexuality and reproduction. The needs related to sexuality and reproduction are crucial ones to overall health and well-being of HIV-infected population. The future research is to focus not only on how sexual rel
