BACKGROUND: Digital media have transformed how college students access, evaluate, and use health information. Although digital health literacy has been linked with risk perception, preventive behavior, self-care, and information seeking, less is known about its association with health information adoption as a downstream stage of digital health communication and the statistical pathways that may account for this association.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the cross-sectional association between critical and interactive digital health literacy and self-reported health information adoption amon

BACKGROUND: In the United States, significant disparities exist in preventative health among underserved communities, including African American/Black (AA/B), Hispanic/Latino (H/L) and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/ queer (LGBTQ+) individuals. We explored the influence of social determinants of health (SDOH) on preventative health outcomes in these groups.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive cross-sectional needs assessment at safety-net health clinics in Providence, Rhode Island, from June to September 2022.
RESULTS: Of N=1,017 individuals, 67% identified as H/L, 16% identified as AA/B

In the past 10 years, several significant national initiatives have released updated strategies and guidelines to improve public health practice specifically as it relates to community health improvement. These initiatives include the 2016 release of Public Health 3.0 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), which defines the concept of the Chief Health Strategist as a leader in the community's health improvement efforts. In addition, in 2022, the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) released guidance for community healt

BackgroundThough mid-life obesity is a known risk factor for dementia, how obesity in late life impacts brain health is not well understood, especially in the presence of comorbid risk factors like hypertension (HTN) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).ObjectiveWe investigated associations between obesity, neuroimaging measures, and cognition in middle aged and older adults, specifically testing whether higher body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio are associated with brain health independent of HTN and IGT.MethodsA total of 599 participants with brain MRI, co

BACKGROUND: Black and Latino communities are disproportionately affected by HIV, and are often underrepresented in sexual health research. It is crucial to understand their participation in research, and gauge the impact of non-response bias in reported results. A sequential multimodal approach to recruitment could potentially increase the response rates and representativeness of the sample by increasing the likelihood of response from the participants. However, data on the use of various recruitment approaches (i.e. low-barrier strategies) for engaging patients from urban Federally Qualified

In 2018, the Community Health Representative (CHR) workforce celebrated their 50th year and serve as the oldest and only federally funded Community Health Worker (CHW) workforce in the United States. CHRs are a highly trained, well-established standardized workforce serving the medical and social needs of American Indian communities. Nationally, the CHR workforce consists of ~1,700 CHRs, representing 264 Tribes. Of the 22 Tribes of Arizona, 19 Tribes operate a CHR Program and employ ~250 CHRs, equivalent to ~30% of the total CHW workforce in the state. Since 2015, Tribal CHR Programs of Arizon

Hispanic immigrant health disparities are among the highest in the nation, especially related to obesity and access to health services. Healthy Fit (En Forma Saludable) is a health promotion program that leverages public health department infrastructure to address these disparities through the use of three key innovations explored in this article: community health workers (CHWs), motivational interviewing (MI), and vouchers for free preventative health services. CHWs trained in MI conduct a health screening and then distribute preventive service vouchers and health resources as needed based on

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are an easily accessible and cost-effective platform for delivering health care worldwide, and the range of services provided has undergone rapid expansion in recent years. Thus, in addition to dispensing medication, pharmacy workers within community pharmacies now give advice on a range of health-promoting behaviours that aim to improve health and to optimise the management of long-term conditions. However, it remains uncertain whether these health-promotion interventions can change the professional practice of pharmacy workers, improve health behaviours and o

BACKGROUND: Volunteer community health workers (CHWs) are an important link between the public health system and the community. The 'Community Participation Policy for Health' in Cambodia identifies CHWs as key to local health promotion and as a critical link between district health centres and the community. However, research on the challenges CHWs face and identifying what is required to optimise their performance is limited in the Cambodian context. This research explores the views of CHWs in rural Cambodia, on the challenges they face when implementing health initiatives.

Community health centers (CHCs) are a cornerstone of the health care safety net. They are the primary source of care for many low-income populations, including both those newly insured under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and those who were left out and will remain uninsured. The ACA provides challenges and opportunities for CHCs, which will require significant changes in infrastructure and care delivery approaches to meet those challenges. This policy brief assesses the progress made by CHCs in Los Angeles County in meeting a number of key indicators of ACA readiness in early 2014. The authors

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and studies have shown connections between cardiovascular and oral health. However, interprofessional community-based participatory initiatives promoting women's oral health have received little research attention. This study evaluated the effectiveness of personalized oral health education (POHE) during a free one-day interprofessional women's health promotion event. The objectives were to 1) assess the participants' knowledge about the connection between oral health and heart disease; 2) disseminate information about oral-systemic linkages; 3)

BACKGROUND: In 1998, the Health Resources and Services Administration's Bureau of Primary Health Care began the Health Disparities Collaboratives (HDC) to improve chronic disease management in community health centers (HCs) nationwide. The HDC incorporates rapid quality improvement, a chronic care model, and best practice learning sessions.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the HDC improves diabetes care in HCs over 4 years and whether more intensive interventions enhance care further.
SUBJECTS: Chart review of 2364, 2417, and 2212 randomly selected patients with diabetes from 34 HCs in 17 st

BACKGROUND: The Arizona Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) project used provider counseling, health education, and community health workers (CHWs) to target chronic disease risk factors in uninsured, primarily Hispanic women over age 50.
METHODS: Participants were recruited from two Tucson clinics participating in the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP). Women were randomly assigned into one of three intervention groups: (1) provider counseling, (2) provider counseling and health education, or (3) provider counsel

The $340 million Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) initiative leveraged community health workers (CHWs) to address immediate pandemic needs and build community resilience. A comprehensive web-based survey was administered to 67 CCR recipients (94% response rate) in the United States to explore implementation experiences. Experience with the target population and established partnerships were key facilitators; challenges included CHW recruitment and adapting to pandemic shifts. CCR demonstrated CHWs' vital role in strengthening public health emergency r

INTRODUCTION: Doula support is increasingly recognized as a promising strategy to address racial inequities in maternal health. The New York City Health Department launched the Citywide Doula Initiative (CDI) in March 2022 to expand access to free, community-based doula support in disinvested neighborhoods.
METHODS: To evaluate the program's first year of implementation, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 44 clients, doulas, doula-organization staff, and Health Department staff between November 2022 and April 2023. We coded interview notes using template analysis (a thematic analysi

Individuals with stigmatized health conditions like vitiligo often turn to online communities for support, where they encounter numerous health advertisements. This study examines how vitiligo patients perceive the emotional and rational appeals within these ads. We employed a netnographic methodology within a large, public Facebook support group for vitiligo (N ≈ 28,000), combining in-depth interviews and participant observation to analyze patient interactions. Our analysis is guided by an integrated framework of social cognitive theory (SCT) and stigma management communication (SMC) theory,

BACKGROUND: Community-based interventions are vital for facilitating poststroke recovery, increasing community participation, and raising awareness about stroke survivors. To optimize recovery and community reintegration, there is a need to understand research findings on community-based interventions that focus on stroke survivors and their caregivers. Although nurses and community health workers (CHWs) are commonly involved in community-based interventions, less is known about their roles relative to other poststroke rehabilitation professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists,

Communities with histories of oppression have shown great resilience. Yet few health interventions focus on structural oppression as a contributor to health problems in these communities. This paper describes the development and active ingredients of Community Wise, a unique behavioral-health intervention designed to reduce substance use frequency, related health risk behaviors, and recidivism among individuals with a history of incarceration and substance abuse residing in distressed and predominantly African American communities. Community Wise, developed through the collaborative efforts of
