Associations between behavioural indicators of "stress" in weaner pigs and respiratory lesions at slaughter.

The aim of the study was to investigate associations on the individual-pig level between eight behavioural indicators of 'stress' (defined in a very general sense), in seven to eight-week old piglets four weeks after weaning and the occurrence of atrophic rhinitis (AR) and chronic pleuritis (CP) at slaughter. The study was designed as a cohort study, including 512 pigs from two commercial farms. With one exception Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 2 (App2) infection was not associated with any of the behaviour patterns observed. Using random-effects logistic regression, weak statistical

TAME 2.0: expanding and improving online data science training for environmental health research.

INTRODUCTION: Data science training has the potential to propel environmental health research efforts into territories that remain untapped and holds immense promise to change our understanding of human health and the environment. Though data science training resources are expanding, they are still limited in terms of public accessibility, user friendliness, breadth of content, tangibility through real-world examples, and applicability to the field of environmental health science. METHODS: To fill this gap, we developed an environmental health data science training resource, the inTelligence

Resilience as recovery: stakeholder perspectives on Uganda's health system response to infectious disease shocks.

BACKGROUND: The conceptualization, definition, and measurement of health system resilience remain contested, hindering policy integration. Country-specific empirical evidence from sub-Saharan Africa, where infectious disease shocks recur, is limited. This study explored how national-level Ugandan stakeholders conceptualize health system resilience to infectious disease shocks and its attributes. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive exploratory qualitative study using semi-structured key informant interviews with 15 purposively selected national-level stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, a

Factors affecting human papillomavirus vaccination: A review of individual, interpersonal, and structural factors affecting vaccine uptake among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) related cancers, particularly cervical cancer, remain a major public health challenge in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs), which bear a disproportionate share of global HPV-attributable mortality. Despite the availability of safe and effective vaccines for nearly two decades, vaccination coverage remains low in LLMICs. Several barriers ranging from health misinformation to systemic delivery challenges have hindered efforts to scale up vaccination programs in these settings. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to identify and synthesize

Contextual variation in young children's acquisition of social-emotional skills.

This study examined variation in the timing of 5,447 infants' and toddlers' reported acquisition of 12 basic social-emotional skills across and within 11 developing and developed country sites. Although children differed significantly across sites in when they attained social-emotional skills on average (e.g., M age Brazil = 20.50 months vs. M age India = 26.92 months), there was also substantial heterogeneity across skills. For example, children in Pakistan were reported to demonstrate sympathy on average seven months earlier than their peers in Ghana, whereas the opposite was true for sharin

Exploring size-inclusive health promotion: A scoping review of societal and community initiatives.

Size-inclusive health promotion initiatives aim to support health and wellbeing for people of all sizes. Greater understanding of their design and implementation at societal and community levels is needed. This review mapped existing literature on size-inclusive health promotion initiatives at societal and community levels, synthesising existing sources to improve understanding of their design, implementation, and impact. We systematically searched academic and grey literature databases for sources that recommended, described, or evaluated a size-inclusive health promotion initiative at the so

"One of the greatest medical success stories:" Physicians and nurses' small stories about vaccine knowledge and anxieties.

In recent years, the Canadian province of Alberta experienced outbreaks of measles, mumps, pertussis, and influenza. Even so, the dominant cultural narrative maintains that vaccines are safe, effective, and necessary to maintain population health. Many vaccine supporters have expressed anxieties that stories contradicting this narrative have lowered herd immunity levels because they frighten the public into avoiding vaccination. As such, vaccine policies often emphasize educating parents and the public about the importance and safety of vaccination. These policies rely on health professionals

Rapid detection and strain-level identification of milk-borne bacteria using a polymer-based chemical tongue.

The detection and strain-level identification of bacteria in food are critical for public health; however, conventional methods typically require expensive equipment, lengthy protocols, and/or specialized expertise. Here, we report a 'chemical tongue' strategy, i.e., an analytical approach inspired by the human gustatory system, for the rapid and user-friendly strain-level sensing of foodborne bacteria. In this platform, a panel of cationic polymers that bear environment-responsive dansyl fluorophores interact nonspecifically yet differentially with the negatively charged bacterial surface, ge

Implementation of the 7-1-7 target for detection, notification, and response to public health threats in five countries: a retrospective, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal detection and response to recent outbreaks, including COVID-19 and mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), have shown that the world is insufficiently prepared for public health threats. Routine monitoring of detection and response performance of health emergency systems through timeliness metrics has been proposed to evaluate and improve outbreak preparedness and contain health threats early. We implemented 7-1-7 to measure the timeliness of detection (target of ≤7 days from emergence), notification (target of ≤1 day from detection), and completion of seven early response a

Integration of family planning into the primary health care in Ethiopia: results from national assessment.

BACKGROUND: Family planning (FP) is part of Ethiopia's essential health service package. However, integrating FP into other health care services is a relatively new concept. Integrated service can minimize missed opportunities and allow health workers to provide FP services and Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent, and Nutrition (RMNCAH-N) services simultaneously. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the levels of FP integration into maternal and child health (MCH) services at primary health care service delivery units in Ethiopia. METHODS: This was a facility-based c

Exposure to Nickel-Cadmium Contamination of Drinking Water Culminates in Liver Cirrhosis, Renal Azotemia, and Metabolic Stress in Rats.

Drinking water polluted by heavy metals has the potential to expose delicate biological systems to a range of health issues. This study embraced the health risks that may arise from subchronic exposure of thirty-four male Wistar rats to nickel (Ni)-cadmium (Cd)-contaminated water. It was done by using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) with three treatment factors (Ni and Cd doses at 50-150 mg/L and exposure at 14-21-28 days) at a single alpha level, resulting in seventeen experimental combinations. Responses such as serum creatinine (CREA) level, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level, BUN/CREA ratio (BCR

The environmental footprint of health care: a global assessment.

BACKGROUND: Health-care services are necessary for sustaining and improving human wellbeing, yet they have an environmental footprint that contributes to environment-related threats to human health. Previous studies have quantified the carbon emissions resulting from health care at a global level. We aimed to provide a global assessment of the wide-ranging environmental impacts of this sector. METHODS: In this multiregional input-output analysis, we evaluated the contribution of health-care sectors in driving environmental damage that in turn puts human health at risk. Using a global supply-c

Determination of the international dysphagia diet standardization initiative level of commercially available oral nutritional supplements.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI), a global multi-disciplinary non-profit framework, has created a standardized communication code to describe foods and liquids for individuals with dysphagia. For liquids, four levels have been determined (Level 0: Thin 1; Level 1: Slightly thick; Level 2: Mildly thick; Level 3: Moderately thick; Level 4: Extremely thick). The implementation of the IDDSI terminology is still in progress. Thus, most commercially available oral nutritional supplements lack an IDDSI identification label. The objective of the
