Occupational exposure to disinfectants and asthma incidence in U.S. nurses: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to disinfectants among healthcare workers has been associated with respiratory health effects, in particular, asthma. However, most studies are cross-sectional and the role of disinfectant exposures in asthma development requires longitudinal studies. We investigated the association between occupational exposure to disinfectants and incident asthma in a large cohort of U.S. female nurses. METHODS: The Nurses' Health Study II is a prospective cohort of 116 429 female nurses enrolled in 1989. Analyses included 61 539 participants who were still in a nursing job and with no

Scaling up of Eco-Bio-Social Strategy to Control Aedes aegypti in Highly Vulnerable Areas in Fortaleza, Brazil: A Cluster, Non-Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol.

Aedes aegypti is a cosmopolitan vector for arboviruses dengue, Zika and chikungunya, disseminated in all Brazilian states. The Eco-Bio-Social (EBS) strategy is vital in Aedes aegypti control as it mobilizes stakeholders (government, professionals, society, and academics) to promote healthy environments. This paper describes the rationale and methods of expanding the EBS strategy for Aedes aegypti control in Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil. A cluster, non-randomized controlled clinical trial was developed to analyze the strategy's effectiveness in vulnerable territories (high incidence of dengue an

Trends in employer-sponsored health insurance coverage for tobacco-dependence treatments.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 1.8 million smokers in California receive their health insurance benefits through their employer. The extent to which these workers have coverage for tobacco-dependence treatments (TDTs) through their employer-sponsored health care is unknown. METHODS: This research used the 2000 and 2005 data from the California Employer Health Benefits Surveys to determine coverage for TDTs by private firms. The overall response rates of firms to the survey were 41% and 36%, respectively. The samples used in this analysis are limited to private firms in California that offered employee he

Byssinosis: airway responses in textile dust exposure.

The inhalation of textile dusts causes bronchoconstriction in textile workers and in healthy experimental subjects. The airway responses to these dusts are potentiated by propranolol and inhibited by an antihistamine drug and by ascorbic acid. Administration of 20 mg disodium cromoglycate by spinhaler 30 minutes prior to challenge with hemp dust or hemp dust extract protected a small number of subjects against the airway constrictor effect, mostly those with a large acute reduction in flow rates. Textile dust extracts contain a histamine-releasing agent, which explains their airway constrictor

Classification and characterization of user groups for wearable fall protection systems: A scoping review.

Wearable fall protection systems (WFPSs) effectively mitigate fall-related injury risks. However, varying application contexts and user characteristics create distinct demands for these assistive technologies. This review investigates the current research status and identifies the key characteristics to classify WFPS users. A literature search across IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases (2014-2024) yielded 40 eligible studies, selected following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. These studies emphasize the importance of addressing user-specific needs and optimizing technology to

Multiple antimicrobial resistance indices of Staphylococcus aureus from the nares of goats and slaughterhouse attendants in Kampala city, Uganda- a cross sectional study.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global menace to both public and animal health sectors with devastating effects in developing countries. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics in human health and livestock management contributes to development and rapid spread of AMR. Staphylococcus aureus is a major opportunistic zoonotic pathogen that colonises the skin and nostrils of human beings and animals and continues to develop antimicrobial resistance against different agents. The study aimed to determine multiple antibiotic resistance indices of S. aureus isolates from healthy domest

A real-time biphasic Kalman filter-based model for estimating human core temperature from heart rate measurements for application in the occupational field.

INTRODUCTION: Early identification of hypothermia or hyperthermia is of vital importance, and real-time monitoring of core temperature (CT) of the workers exposed to thermal environments is an extremely valuable tool. From the existing literature studies, the model developed by Buller et al. in their study of 2013 that generates real-time estimates of CT from heart rate (HR) measurements using the Kalman filter (KF) shows good potential for occupational application. However, some aspects could be improved to reliably handle the existing very wide range of workers and work activities. This stud

Benefits and Harms of 'Smart Drugs' (Nootropics) in Healthy Individuals.

'Smart drugs' (also known as 'nootropics' and 'cognitive enhancers' [CEs]) are being used by healthy subjects (i.e. students and workers) typically to improve memory, attention, learning, executive functions and vigilance, hence the reference to a 'pharmaceutical cognitive doping behaviour'. While the efficacy of known CEs in individuals with memory or learning deficits is well known, their effect on non-impaired brains is still to be fully assessed. This paper aims to provide an overview on the prevalence of use; putative neuroenhancement benefits and possible harms relating to the intake of

The response of skin microcirculation to hyperthermic stress in tumour patients.

Hyperthermia and its effect on tissues are topics of great interest to scientists working in the area of radiation biology and medicine. It has been shown by many workers, that blood flow in malignant tissue displays a different response to heating than that in normal tissue. Initially, the blood flow in tumour tissue is greater than that in normal tissue, and when heat is applied there is an increase in blood flow. The extent of the increase in flow with increasing temperature is greater in normal tissue than in tumour tissue. In our laboratory we studied the effect of temperature on skin blo

Low levels of lead and glutathione markers of redox status in human blood.

Exposure to lead (Pb) is implicated in a plethora of health threats in both adults and children. Increased exposure levels are associated with oxidative stress in the blood of workers exposed at occupational levels. However, it is not known whether lower Pb exposure levels are related to a shift toward a more oxidized state. To assess the association between blood lead level (BLL) and glutathione (GSH) redox biomarkers in a population of healthy adults, BLL and four GSH markers (GSH, GSSG, GSH/GSSG ratio and redox potential E h ) were measured in the blood of a cross-sectional cohort of 282 av
