Consideration of Contextual Factors in Understanding Treatment-Seeking for Hazardous Substance Use.

Background: Despite high prevalence of substance-related problems and associated costs, rates of treatment-seeking and engagement for substance use (SU) remain low. Many treatment barriers have been cited to explain this discrepancy, and models of rational reasoning, such as the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), have demonstrated predictive ability in understanding help-seeking. However, current theories may not adequately capture external contextual factors, especially when assessing help-seeking for stigmatized conditions among those with minoritized identities. Objectives: This study aimed

Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Asian American Adults: Findings from the 2021 California Health Interview Survey.

Cumulative adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and psychological distress have been shown to negatively affect mental health across the lifespan. Less is known, however, about how ACEs might impact mental health help-seeking behavior in adulthood, especially among Asian Americans, a population with high exposure to trauma who also face cultural barriers to mental health care. The study’s aim was to evaluate the prevalence of ACEs within a sample of Asian American respondents, the relationship of ACEs and psychological distress with help-seeking, and the association of ACEs with different type

Seeking help for erectile dysfunction after treatment for prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer survivors appear to have higher rates of seeking medical help for erectile dysfunction (ED) than other cohorts of sexually dysfunctional men; however, factors associated with help-seeking for ED after prostate cancer have not been investigated. A group of 1,188 men with ED after prostate cancer responded to a postal survey about their sexuality, including a new questionnaire developed to measure traditional masculine attitudes about sex that could inhibit help-seeking. Respondents had a mean age of 68 years and were an average of 4.3 years postdiagnosis of cancer. At the time o

Social cognitive theory to improve symptom appraisal and help-seeking among patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases: A qualitative study.

AIM: Social cognitive theory (SCT) has been successfully employed to improve symptom appraisal and help-seeking among patients with various conditions but is yet to be applied in the context of autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs). This study aimed to explore the applicability of SCT in and possible approaches to improving symptom appraisal and help-seeking of patients with ARDs, one of the key barriers to earlier diagnosis. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 ARD patients with a prolonged pre-diagnosis interval (>3 months). We coded the transcripts deductively using SC

A cognitively-sensitized stigma model of help-seeking inhibition in generalized anxiety disorder: A conceptual framework illustrated in the Chinese cultural context.

Although previous studies have established the crucial role of stigma in inhibiting psychological help-seeking, little is known about how distinct mental disorders shape this process through their specific cognitive characteristics. To address this gap, the present study takes Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) as an illustrative case to explore how its core cognitive traits amplify stigma effects and suppress help-seeking intention. This study is a conceptual investigation that proposes the Cognitively-Sensitized Stigma Model, integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to elucidate how

LGBTQIA+ Identity-Related Concerns of Sexual Assault Survivors Who Access an Anonymous Online Hotline.

LGBTQIA+ individuals experience higher rates of sexual violence victimization than their heterosexual, cisgender counterparts. Emerging research suggests unique barriers to disclosure and help-seeking in the aftermath of sexual assault, but relatively little work has examined LGBTQIA+ identity-related concerns discussed in a help-seeking context. This study examined anonymous, archival data, from a sample of 292 visitors to the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline. Analyses were limited to visitors who identified as the victim of a sexual violence event, disclosed they identified as LGTBQIA+

Suicidality in a sample of methadone maintenance clients.

Previous work has shown that suicide is a significant cause of death among substance abusers, including methadone-maintained clients, and that the prediction of suicidal ideation and behavior is difficult. Preliminary review of data collected at admission on a population of 438 methadone-maintained clients found 55 expressing some level of suicidal behaviors during the course of treatment. These clients were compared with a randomly selected comparison group of 55 nonsuicide clients matched for gender and race/ethnicity on measures of psychological dysfunction, drug use, family dysfunction, an

Mental Health Help-Seeking Intentions and Perceived Barriers Among Filipino American Older Adults: An Exploratory COM-B-Informed Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Filipino Americans are one of the least likely Asian American subgroups to use formal mental health services, even when mental health needs are present. This study used the Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) framework to examine mental health symptomatology, perceived social support, help-seeking intentions, and perceived barriers to mental health treatment among Filipino American older adults residing in the United States. Methods: We used a cross-sectional descriptive correlational design. A sample of 100 Filipino American older adults completed the Pat

Help-Seeking Among Children Impacted by Commercial Sexual Exploitation: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aims to summarize current research on help-seeking behaviors and patterns among children who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) victimization and/or are at high risk of exploitation. Because the literature on help-seeking specific to CSEC victimization is limited, the current review was expanded to summarize findings from help-seeking research for children who have experienced harms that often co-occur with CSEC, such as maltreatment and homelessness. The authors searched three large article databases (PsycInfo, Ovid MEDLINE, and Web of Scien

Asking for help: the development of a simulation-based mental health application to enhance depression literacy, mental health communication, and help-seeking among Black autistic youth.

Black autistic youth experience disproportionately high rates of depression and face intersecting barriers such as racial discrimination, stigma, and limited access to care, yet few interventions address their needs. This study introduces Asking for Help (A4H), a culturally responsive, simulation-based intervention designed to improve depression literacy and help-seeking skills through an e-learning module and interactive conversation practice. Guided by mental health literacy theory, the Theory of Help-Seeking Behavior, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and Disability Critical Theory, A4H was d

"I don't belong here": experiences of substance use and treatment compliance among young adults in Lango, Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are a leading cause of disability and premature mortality among youth globally. A significant number of young people in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are reported to have SUDs and very few seeking help. The actual reasons for poor health-seeking behaviors and non-compliance remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of substance use, health seeking behaviors and treatment compliance among young adults diagnosed with SUDs in the Lango sub region of Uganda. METHODS: This cross-sectional-qualitative study employed a phenom

Concussion as a Public Health Crisis: Multilevel Approaches for Improving Athlete Care-Seeking.

Fifty percent of athletes who suffer a concussion do not seek care for the injury, which leads to worse outcomes including more severe and numerous symptoms and prolonged recovery. Many organizations use annual education as a secondary injury-prevention strategy to improve athlete care-seeking, and subsequently, injury outcomes. However, these efforts have proven insufficient. Those who develop educational programs have begun to use a variety of behavioral theories to inform the content and delivery of these interventions. However, these interventions rarely acknowledge or address systematic b

Physician assessments of drug seeking behavior: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Pain complaints are common, but clinicians are increasingly concerned about overuse of opioid pain medications. This may lead patients with actual pain to be stigmatized as "drug-seeking," or attempting to obtain medications they do not require medically. We assessed whether patient requests for specific opioid pain medication would lead physicians to classify them as drug-seeking and change management decisions. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Mixed-methods analysis of interviews with 192 office-based primary care physicians after viewing video vignettes depicting patients presenting with

A surprising finding related to executive control in a patient sample of hypersexual men.

INTRODUCTION: Patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior often exhibit features of impulsivity, cognitive rigidity, and poor judgment as well as deficits in emotion regulation and excessive preoccupation with sex. Some of these characteristics are also common among patients presenting with neurological pathology associated with executive dysfunction. Exploring relationships between dysregulated sexual behavior and executive deficits will enhance our understanding of hypersexuality. AIM: This study sought to assess whether patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior exhibit executive de

Exploring help-seeking behaviours among minority ethnic women regarding perinatal mental health challenges in England: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Minority ethnic women (MEW) face a high risk of perinatal mental health issues but are among the least likely to disclose emotional concerns to healthcare professionals. However, what leads to low help-seeking behaviours among MEW is poorly understood, and it is unclear how to best promote help-seeking in this population. OBJECTIVES: To explore the help-seeking behaviours of MEW related to perinatal mental health and identify approaches to promote greater help-seeking. METHODS: In this preregistered qualitative study, we used purposeful sampling via social media to recruit MEW wh

Help-seeking for gambling problems following expansion of Ontario's online gambling market and legalization of single-event sports betting.

BACKGROUND: Online gambling and sports betting have recently been legalized and expanded in North America. We aimed to evaluate long-term changes in the frequency of gambling-related helpline contacts in the province of Ontario following the launch of a government-operated online gambling platform (PlayOLG) in January 2015 and the expansion of private online gambling, including single-event sports betting, in April 2022. METHODS: We conducted an interrupted time-series analysis of contacts with Ontario's free 24-hour mental health and addictions helpline (ConnexOntario) between January 2012 a
