Effect of arginine vasopressin on the behavioral activity in the behavior despair depression rat model.

Arginine vasopressin (AVP), a nonapeptide posterior hormone of the pituitary, is mainly synthesized and secreted in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and supraoptic nucleus (SON). Large numbers of studies have reported that AVP plays a role in depression. The present study was to investigate by which level, brain or periphery, AVP affects the behavioral activity in the behavior despair depression rat model. The results showed that (1) either forced swimming or tail suspension significantly increased AVP concentration not only in the brain (PVN, SON, frontal of cortex, hippocampus,

A Theory of Cuteness as Developmental Investment.

What is the evolutionary function of cuteness? Research on cuteness originated with the study of juvenile morphology following Lorenz's Kindchenschema proposal, which identified specific cues of juvenility that reliably elicit a distinctive affective response. Because juvenile cues activate protective responses typically associated with vulnerability and distress (e.g., compassion, harm avoidance), cuteness has often been interpreted as an emotion whose primary function is protection. However, this leaves a key pattern unexplained: children are perceived as cutest not when they are helpless, b

Medical student attitudes and educational interventions to prevent neurophobia: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: With an aging American population, the burden of neurologic disease is intensifying and the decline in neurology residents and practicing neurologists is leaving these patients helpless and unable to find care. 'Neurophobia', a chronic illness that begins early in medical school, has been identified as a cause for the low number of neurology residents. METHODS: A longitudinal study surveyed medical students at the beginning of their first year (M1) and then again at the beginning of their second year (M2). Three neuroscience educational interventions were studied: team based learn

What Does CATS Have to Do With Cancer? The Cognitive Activation Theory of Stress (CATS) Forms the SURGE Model of Chronic Post-surgical Pain in Women With Breast Cancer.

Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) represents a highly prevalent and significant clinical problem. Both major and minor surgeries entail risks of developing CPSP, and cancer-related surgery is no exception. As an example, more than 40% of women undergoing breast cancer surgery struggle with CPSP years after surgery. While we do not fully understand the pathophysiology of CPSP, we know it is multifaceted with biological, social, and psychological factors contributing. The aim of this review is to advocate for the role of response outcome expectancies in the development of CPSP following breast c

Pain-Related Rumination, But Not Magnification or Helplessness, Mediates Race and Sex Differences in Experimental Pain.

UNLABELLED: Compared with white individuals and men, black individuals and women show a lower tolerance for experimental pain stimuli. Previous studies suggest that pain catastrophizing is important in this context, but little is known about which components of catastrophizing contribute to these race and sex differences. The purpose of the current study was to examine the individual components of catastrophizing (rumination, magnification, and helplessness) as candidate mediators of race and sex differences in experimental pain tolerance. Healthy undergraduates (N = 172, 74% female, 43.2% bla

Biosocial theory of psychopathology: a three by three factor model.

An effort has been made in this paper to describe a broad based theoretical scheme for understanding emotional disorders in mentally retarded individuals. Incorporating research from a broad group of professionals and researchers is stressed, and some efforts to point out where additional research can further clarify the postulates noted here were made. Although the emphasis has been on the mentally retarded, it is likely that the implications of this view of psychopathology have credence for other populations as well. It cannot be stressed enough that those who propose theoretical models shou

Coping with the forced swim stressor: Current state-of-the-art.

The forced swim test (FST) for rodents does not model despair or helplessness. It also is not a read-out for depression, anxiety, psychomotor retardation or autism, because these are anthropomorphic interpretations of the rodent's acquired immobility. Rather, the transition from swimming to immobility allows to examine the mechanistic underpinning of coping with inescapable stressors. However, in a recent detailed analysis of the FST application over the past 40 years, we noted a dramatic surge in the use of this test to phenotype animals as 'depressed'. As a follow up to that report, we now p

Anxious solitude and peer exclusion predict social helplessness, upset affect, and vagal regulation in response to behavioral rejection by a friend.

It was hypothesized that combined individual child vulnerability (anxious solitude) and interpersonal stress (peer exclusion) would predict the strongest responses to experimentally manipulated behavioral peer rejection. Results indicated that in a sample of 3rd graders (N = 160, 59% girls), anxious solitary excluded children displayed more behavioral manifestations of social helplessness before and after behavioral rejection, reported more feelings of rejection in anticipation of and reaction to behavioral rejection, and were observably more upset during behavioral rejection than were normati

Burden of psychosocial adversity and vulnerability in middle age: associations with biobehavioral risk factors and quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: Numerous psychosocial factors are associated with disease risk. This study investigated the possibility that a combination of chronic stress from exposure to multiple sources and absence of protective psychosocial resources would be related to heightened emotional distress, health risk behavior, biological risk factors, and impaired quality of life, independently of socioeconomic position (SEP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were analyzed from 227 men and women aged 47 to 59 years from the Whitehall II epidemiological cohort. A psychosocial adversity and vulnerability index (PAVIX)

Understanding depression through animal models: experimental and behavioral perspectives.

Depression is a multifactorial, chronic, and recurrent psychiatric disorder that represents a major global health burden. Despite extensive research, its underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood, largely due to ethical and methodological limitations in human studies. Consequently, rodent models have become indispensable tools for investigating the neurobiology of depression and evaluating potential antidepressant therapies. This narrative review provides a comprehensive and updated overview of the principal experimental models of depression in mice and rats, includi

From Struggling (With) Screening Tests to Mouse Models of Depression-Relevant Neurobehavioral States.

A major, serendipitous psychiatric discovery is monoamine-transporter reuptake inhibition as an antidepressant mechanism of action. Chronic treatment with such antidepressants is efficacious, with onset requiring 1-2 weeks, in many but by no means all patients with major depressive or another stress-related neuropsychiatric disorder. The forced swim test (FST) in rats and mice involves the acute, moderate stressor of placement in a container of water: at test onset, the predominant reaction is swimming, interpreted cautiously as active "struggling"; over minutes, this is replaced by floating,

High, in Contrast to Low Levels of Acute Stress Induce Depressive-like Behavior by Involving Astrocytic, in Addition to Microglial P2X7 Receptors in the Rodent Hippocampus.

Extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) in the brain is suggested to be an etiological factor of major depressive disorder (MDD). It has been assumed that stress-released ATP stimulates P2X7 receptors (Rs) at the microglia, thereby causing neuroinflammation; however, other central nervous system (CNS) cell types such as astrocytes also possess P2X7Rs. In order to elucidate the possible involvement of the MDD-relevant hippocampal astrocytes in the development of a depressive-like state, we used various behavioral tests (tail suspension test [TST], forced swim test [FST], restraint stress,

Phytochemistry and pharmacology of anti-depressant medicinal plants: A review.

Stress renders an individual to experience mental pressure and exhaustion which brings about feelings of anxiety, depression, anger and/or other negative emotions. Depression affects a person's state of mind, behaviour, health and is often associated with suicide. The use of anti-depressant drugs as therapeutic agents is associated with symptoms such as, delayed onset of action, side-effects, drug-drug and dietary interactions, sexual dysfunction, cardiac toxicity, etc. Thus, there is need to target these issues and improve current treatment options. Medicinal plants have long been used in dis

Preclinical evidence of rapid-onset antidepressant-like effect in Radix Polygalae extract.

Radix Polygalae (the root of Polygala tenuifolia) is a herb widely used in traditional Asian medicine that is thought to exert a variety of neuropsychiatric effects. Radix Polygalae extract can protect against N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) neurotoxicity and induce brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, suggesting modulatory roles at glutamatergic synapses and possible antidepressant action. In accordance with this hypothesis, Radix Polygalae extract demonstrated antidepressant-like effects in 8-week-old male C57Bl/6 mice by decreasing behavioral despair in the forced swim and tail

The pharmacology of DMP696 and DMP904, non-peptidergic CRF1 receptor antagonists.

CRF(1) antagonists DMP696 and DMP904 were designed as drug development candidates for the treatment of anxiety and depression. Both compounds display nanomolar affinity for human CRF(1) receptors, and exhibit >1000-fold selectivity for CRF(1) over CRF(2) receptors and over a broad panel of other proteins. DMP696 and DMP904 block CRF-stimulated adenylyl cyclase activity in cortical homogenates and cell-lines expressing CRF(1) receptors. Both compounds inhibit CRF-stimulated ACTH release from rat pituitary corticotropes. Binding and functional studies indicate that DMP696 and DMP904 behave as no

Gastrodin ameliorates depressive-like behaviors and up-regulates the expression of BDNF in the hippocampus and hippocampal-derived astrocyte of rats.

Gastrodin (GAS), a main constituent of a Chinese herbal medicine Tian ma, has been shown to be effective in treating various mood disorders. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of GAS on alleviating depressive-like behaviors in a rat model of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) and regulating the expression of BDNF in the hippocampus and hippocampal-derived astrocyte from Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Following CUS, rats were intraperitoneally administered gastrodin (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg daily) or vehicle for 2 weeks. Rats were then experienced sucrose preference test and fo

The developmental origins of conversion disorders.

Attachment theory offers a novel developmental framework for understanding conversion reactions as having phylogenetic roots in two different innate animal defense behaviours: The 'freeze response' and 'appeasement defense behaviours'. From this perspective, conversion symptoms reflect two distinct, threat-elicited emotional responses, which are primed in context-dependent developmental experiences (pathways) and underpinned by different neurobiological mechanisms. The first of these two developmental pathways to conversion disorder involves the organization of self-protective strategies that

The contributions of self-defeating philosophies, perceived helplessness, and repression to anxiety among psychiatric patients.

Four of the most influential psychological explanations for the development of anxiety attribute it to (1) repressed awareness of undesirable emotions; (2) the emergence of unacceptable feelings from the unconscious; (3) adherence to irrational, self-defeating philosophies; and (4) perceived helplessness/lack of control over one's affairs. To test these theories, the authors administered the Trait Anxiety, Denial, Irrational Beliefs, and Locus of Control scales to 190 psychiatric inpatients. Appropriate zero-order, attenuation-corrected, multiple, and partial correlations were run. Denial was

Teaching Social Inequities in Canadian Occupational Therapy: Tensions and Strategies for an 'Embedded Sociologist'.

Health professions education increasingly addresses social inequities, cultivating student awareness of structured power relations. Yet such teaching is met with resistance, with students prioritizing "hard" sciences and demanding immediate relevance and clinical application for everything taught. Sociological teaching and pedagogies are too often dismissed as "fluffy" and "wasting time." In Canada, professional competencies in occupational therapy now require practitioners to engage in anti-oppressive practice, which means education programs need to teach those skills. This article employs an

More chemotherapy is being administered today than ever before. Megadoses of these drugs are becoming commonplace. Better methods of drug delivery, patient monitoring, and sophisticated support services such as infectious disease specialists, transfusion therapy, intensive care facilities, oncology clinical nurse specialists, and others, enable the physician to treat the patient in a variety of settings, including ambulatory care centers and the home. Just as the nurse needs advanced skills and the knowledge to know the subtle differences between an expected side effect and a toxic reaction, t
