UNLABELLED: Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) accounts for 15-20% of adult leukemias but is very rare in children (2%). Fewer than 10% of CML patients are younger than 20 years. The mononucleosis-like syndrome due to cytomegalovirus (CMV) has many clinical features in common with classic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) induced infectious mononucleosis (IM). The hematologic and hepatic findings in both diseases are identical. Diagnosis of the CMV-IM syndrome usually can be made on the basis of indirect immunofluorescence for CMV macroglobulins (CMV-IgM). EBV virologic tests may also be necessary, as patients with primary EBV infections may have cross-reactions at low titer in the CMV-IgM test.

Infectious mononucleosis continues to be an important medical problem of young adults. Diagnosis is based on three principal criteria: (1) a compatible clinical picture, (2) characteristic hematologic changes, and (3) a positive serology. A relative lymphocytosis of 60% or higher with at least 20% atypical lymphocytes is a common feature. Laboratory diagnosis is dependent on proper application and interpretation of the various serologic tests. Evidence of abnormal liver function is of particular value in differentiating this disease from bacterial and viral pharyngitis.

The haematological manifestations were reviewed in 94 patients (55 males and 39 females) with visceral leishmaniasis. Their ages ranged from 4 months to 12 years (mean per cent 1.8 years).
