Testing Spirotetramat as an Alternative Solution to Abamectin for Cacopsylla pyri (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) Control: Laboratory and Field Tests.

Aim of the study was to investigate the performance of the new insecticide "spirotetramat" as an alternative solution of "abamectin" for the control of Cacopsylla pyri L. (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) in the context of an IPM program in European pear, Pyrus communis L.. Laboratory bioassays for the estimation of LC50 and LC90 of both insecticides were performed using four populations collected in Emilia-Romagna (Italy) orchards where different pest management strategies were used (organic, integrated, and conventional). The same populations were also analyzed for the main insecticide detoxifying acti

On the synonymy of Dymantis Stål, 1861 and Eomyrochea Linnavuori, 1982 and resulting nomenclatural changes (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae).

The Afrotropical genus-group taxa Dymantis Stål, 1861 and Eomyrochea Linnavuori, 1982 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Myrocheini) are confirmed as objective synonyms, both sharing the same type species: Dymantis subvittata Stål, 1861. As a result, Dymantis (= Eomyrochea, syn. confirm.) is downgraded to a subgenus of Myrochea Amyot and Serville, 1843 and a new genus, Neodymantis gen. nov., is established for Dymantis sensu Linnavuori (1982) (type species Halys plana Fabricius, 1803). The following new combinations are proposed: Myrochea (Dymantis) subvittata (Stål, 1861), c

Effects of fertilization of four hemlock species on Adelges tsugae (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) growth and feeding preference of predators.

Understanding how fertilization affects host resistance to hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand (Hemiptera: Adelgidae), is important because fertilizers are often used to grow resistant selections to a suitable size for testing. We evaluated four hemlock species (Tsuga) under three different fertilizer regimes to assess whether fertility affected resistance to the adelgid and to determine whether it affected feeding preferences of the adelgid predators Laricobius nigrinus Fender and Sasajiscymnus tsugae (Sasaji & McClure). Treatments were long-term fertilization (from June 2008 to Jun

First report of colonies of sylvatic Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in the Paraguayan Chaco, using a trained dog.

In the Gran Chaco region, control of Triatoma infestans has been limited by persistent domestic infestations despite the efforts of the Vector Control Services. In Paraguay, this region is the highest endemic area in the country, showing high levels of indoor and outdoor infestation. Although sylvatic T. infestans have been found in the Bolivian and Argentine Chaco, similar searches for sylvatic populations of this species in Paraguay had been unsuccessful over the last 20 years. Here we present a new approach to detecting sylvatic Triatominae, using a trained dog, which has successfully confi

[Damage of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on wheat plants related to duration time and density of infestation].

Aphids are considered relevant pests on wheat either by direct damage through sap sucking or by indirect damage vectoring BYDV (Barley yellow dwarf virus). Rhopalosiphum padi L. has been observed infesting wheat fields with an increasing frequency. The knowledge and the available technology, besides being more related to other aphids species already recognized as pests, they are insufficient to control the specific problem of R. padi. Thus, this work evaluated the effects of feeding duration and infestation densities of R. padi on seedlings of wheat cv. Embrapa 16. Grain yield, yield component

Functional characterization of fatty acid synthase gene (FAS) in the reproduction of mirid predator, Cyrtorhinus lividipennis (Hemiptera: Miridae).

Natural enemies serve a crucial role in crop protection through the regulation of pest population dynamics. Cyrtorhinus lividipennis is an important natural enemy of rice planthoppers. Fatty acid synthase (FAS), a multifunctional enzyme crucial for fatty acid biosynthesis, serves as a vital energy source for insect reproduction. However, the function of FAS in the reproductive processes of C. lividipennis remains incompletely understood. In this study, the ClFAS gene was successfully cloned from C. lividipennis. The open reading frame of ClFAS was 7224 bp, encoding a putative protein of 2407 a

Protective netting as a barrier against the X-disease phytoplasma vector Colladonus reductus (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in cherry orchards.

X-disease, caused by "Candidatus Phytoplasma pruni," poses a significant economic threat to the stone fruit industry, causing the removal of vast cherry acreage in Washington State. The most abundant vector in these orchards is the leafhopper Colladonus reductus (Van Duzee). Growers need season-long preventative alternatives to insecticides for a robust integrated pest management program. Thus, this study evaluated the efficacy of protective netting as a barrier to C. reductus. Between 2024 and 2025, 3 field trials were conducted testing 4 types of netting (20% shade, 30% shade, Mesh 25, and M

YOLO11-based deep learning and machine vision framework for automated detection and counting of Rhopalosiphum padi (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

The bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus; Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a major cereal pest and a vector within the barley yellow dwarf virus complex. Manual scouting is labor-intensive and can be inconsistent, motivating rapid, image-based monitoring. We developed R. padi Count, an optimized deep learning framework built on Ultralytics YOLO11 for automated detection and image-level counting of R. padi in cluttered imagery. Starting from a YOLO11n baseline, we integrated an ADown downsampling module, Triplet Attention, and a Focusing Diffusion Pyramid Network module to improve small

First record of Ornithocoris pallidus (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) associated with Hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) nest in the Brazilian Pantanal.

This study reports the first record of Ornithocoris pallidus associated with a Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) nest in the Brazilian Pantanal supported by integrative morphological and molecular identification. Ectoparasites associated with nests can compromise the health and development of birds that use reused cavities, such as the hyacinth macaw. Among these parasites, blood-feeding bugs of the Cimicidae family remain poorly studied in wild environments. Accordingly, the specimens were collected in February 2025 from a natural cavity containing a blue macaw chick and from a nest

Molecular phylogenetics provides insights into biogeography and character evolution in the assassin bug tribe Saicini (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Emesinae).

Reduviidae (assassin bugs) are a species-rich group of terrestrial predatory insects, exhibiting remarkable diversity in foreleg morphology. The tribe Saicini (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Emesinae) displays various morphological modifications of the foreleg. Although the definition and classification of Saicini have undergone considerable changes in recent years, the higher-level phylogeny and evolutionary history of the tribe remain poorly understood. Here, we generated a molecular dataset for Saicini to investigate its phylogeny, historical biogeography and foreleg character evolution. Our phylog

Exogenous salicylic acid improves resistance of aphid-susceptible wheat to the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Salicylic acid (SA), a phytohormone, has been considered to be a key regulator mediating plant defence against pathogens. It is still vague how SA activates plant defence against herbivores such as chewing and sucking pests. Here, we used an aphid-susceptible wheat variety to investigate Sitobion avenae response to SA-induced wheat plants, and the effects of exogenous SA on some defence enzymes and phenolics in the plant immune system. In SA-treated wheat seedlings, intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), fecundity and apterous rate of S. avenae were 0.25, 31.4 nymphs/female and 64.4%, respec

Host-plant resistance associated with Poncirus trifoliata influence oviposition, development and adult emergence of Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Liviidae).

BACKGROUND: The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, is the primary vector of the phloem-inhabiting bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus putatively responsible for citrus greening (huanglongbing), a devastating citrus disease. Infestations of D. citri frequently develop on Citrus and other genera within the Rutaceae subfamily Aurantioideae including Murraya and Bergera. The genotype Poncirus trifoliata is also a member of the Aurantioideae and readily hybridizes with Citrus spp., but colonization by D. citri is reduced on this genotype. RESULTS: Working with young potted se

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Infestations in Tree Borders and Subsequent Patterns of Abundance in Soybean Fields.

The invasive brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an important pest of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) in the Mid-Atlantic United States. In order to assess the influence of nonmanaged wooded borders on H. halys infestation patterns in soybean, 12 soybean fields in Orange and Madison Counties, VA, were sampled each week from July to October in 2013 or 2014 for H. halys. At each location, five 2-min visual counts of H. halys life stages were made on tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima Mill.) and other favorable host trees along a wooded border, on th

Banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa (Hemiptera: Aphididae): ecology and implications for the integrated management of banana bunchy top disease.

INTRODUCTION: Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD), caused by the banana bunchy top virus (BBTV), poses a growing threat to banana production in Africa and is spread locally by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa. Effective BBTD management requires better understanding of aphid habitat, dispersal, response to farm operations, and practical aphid vector and disease control options. METHODS: This study integrated field assessments, field experiments, and a laboratory trial in Uganda to characterize aphid ecology and refine integrated pest and disease management. RESULTS: Aphids were highly c

Small sips, big losses: measuring the feeding threshold of Lygus (Hemiptera: Miridae) on faba bean (Vicia faba) seeds.

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is an increasingly important pulse crop in Western Canada, but its production is threatened by Lygus spp. (Hemiptera: Miridae), which cause pod and seed damage through piercing-sucking feeding. This study examined the relationship between Lygus feeding duration, insect density, and the extent of scarring damage in faba bean seeds using complementary no-choice and electrical penetration graph (EPG) experiments. In no-choice assays, single adults of L. lineolaris and L. elisus confined to plants for 1, 3, 24, or 48 h produced significantly increasing damage over time (F

Bioassay and field trial of pesticides against spotted lanternfly (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) egg masses at different overwintering application timings.

Spotted lanternfly (SLF; Lycorma delicatula [White]) overwinters in egg masses for approximately eight months a year, representing its longest individual life stage. Therefore, this life stage constitutes a good candidate for management practices. Egg masses were collected from various locations in Winchester, VA, and stored in climate-controlled incubators (10 °C, 65% relative humidity, and a 16:8 light-to-dark ratio). The egg masses were treated during one of three periods during the overwintering phase: winter, early spring, or late spring. Bioassays were conducted across 3 years (2021 to 2
