OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological pattern and trends of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the area where people had been immunized by HBV vaccine for long time.
METHODS: Through cluster sampling and cross-sectional study, relative information and blood samples from people in Long-an county by families were collected. Signals of HBV infection were tested by solid-phase reverse immunosorbent test.
RESULTS: (1) The average HBsAg positive rate was 7.5% with anti-HBs as 44.5 %, and anti-HBc as 47.8%. The positive rates of HBsAg and anti-HBc among 0-19 year-olds were lower than those of > or = 20 y

AIM: To better understand the clinical significance of hepatitis B serologic markers in babies born to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive mothers, the incidence of maternal serologic markers of hepatitis B via placenta and its transformation in these babies were investigated.
METHODS: Mothers with positive HBsAg were selected in the third trimester of pregnancy. Their babies received immunoprophylaxis with hepatitis B immunoglobulin and hepatitis B vaccine after birth, and were consecutively followed up for hepatitis B serologic markers and HBV DNA at birth, mo 1, 4, 7, 12, and 24.

Long-term protection against clinically significant breakthrough hepatitis B (HB) virus infection and chronic carriage depends on immunological memory, which allows a protective anamnestic antibody response to antigen challenge. Memory seems to last for at least 15 years in immunocompetent individuals. To date there are no data to support the need for booster doses of HB vaccine in immunocompetent individuals who have responded to a primary course. All adequately vaccinated individuals have shown evidence of immunity in the form of persisting anti-HBs and/or in vitro B-cell stimulation or an a

To study the mechanisms of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-induced chronic hepatitis (B-CH), we took chronic hepatitis B patients' peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) and examined their cytotoxic activities against human myeloma cells (ARH77) transfected by HBV-DNA. Two different transfected cells, one expressing HBV envelope antigens (S6) and the other expressing HBV core antigens (C4), were prepared and used as targets in the in vitro cytotoxic test. We found that PBL of B-CH patients had specific cytotoxic activity against these target cells (S6, 22.0 +/- 4.8%; C4, 21.6 +/- 4.8%), whereas no remarka

To identify previously unrecognized sources for acquiring acute hepatitis B and non-A, non-B (NANB) hepatitis, we interviewed patients with these types of hepatitis who were reported to two county health departments in the United States and matched control subjects for known and potential risk factors for acquiring hepatitis. Of 218 patients with hepatitis B and 140 patients with NANB hepatitis, 46% and 53%, respectively, had no commonly recognized source for infection. When these patients were compared with control subjects, significantly more patients with hepatitis B had multiple heterosexu

Eight patients with chronic (mean 52 months) type B hepatitis (chronic active hepatitis and active cirrhosis) and markers of active viral replication (presence of HBeAg and HBV-DNA in serum) were treated with Ara-AMP for 7-12 weeks. The mean follow-up time was 18.3 months. All but one patient responded to treatment. In seven patients, HBeAg and HBV-DNA became negative and developed anti-HBe. One patient lost HBsAg as well as HBeAg and HBV-DNA. HBcAg in liver tissue became undetectable or greatly reduced in the seven patients in whom it was strongly positive. During a 2-year period, 38 patients with clinical hepatitis B virus infection were seen at the Public Health Service Alaska Native Hospital in Bethel. This hospital serves an area in southwest Alaska that is hyperendemic for hepatitis B virus. The patients came to the hospital at various times from 15 scattered villages, and 92% were Eskimo. None of the patients had a recent history of hypodermic injection or blood transfusions. Twenty-five patients, all originally positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), were followed for up to 5 years after onset of illness, and 15 were either slow

Chronic evolution after acute hepatitis B virus infection. During a 13 months period 1977-1978 a total of 129 cases of acute viral hepatitis type B occurred among patients who were admitted with hepatitis to Roslagstull, Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. Less than 1% progressed to chronicity. Prevalence of Delta superinfection was studied among 60 patients with chronic hepatitis B. Nineteen (32%) were anti-delta positive. The majority of the positive patients were either non-European immigrants or addicts, both 9/19 (47%). Infections with the delta agent was found to have occurred in Stockholm alre

Postpartum elevation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in mothers with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) presents a significant clinical challenge. However, the existing literature demonstrates inconsistencies regarding its incidence and predictors in mothers infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Recent advancements in antiviral prophylaxis against mother-to-child transmission of HBV and postpartum cessation of antiviral therapy further complicate this issue. Our literature review, spanning PubMed, and two Chinese-language databases (CNKI and Wanfang) from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2023 aimed

The introduction of Hepatitis B Immunoglobulins (HBIg) prophylaxis at and after liver transplantation (LT) facilitated excellent long-term survival of transplant patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Several studies suggested that only short-term (i.e. 4-8 weeks) HBIg prophylaxis after LT followed by the long-term administration of HBV polymerase inhibitors prevents HBV recurrence. In hepatitis D virus (HDV)/HBV co-infected patients, the need for long-term HBIg prophylaxis on top of HBV polymerase inhibitors is unknown. HDV requires HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) for uptake int

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite the availability of HBV vaccinations that are 98% to 100% effective, an estimated 820,000 annual deaths were attributed to HBV in 2019, mainly related to the sequelae of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Because disease prevalence is concentrated outside of the United States, it is overlooked, but with expanded vaccination recommendations provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and recommended screening, as well as heightened awareness by health care providers

UNLABELLED: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is endemic in Bangladesh. Studies have indicated that HBV is the major cause of chronic hepatitis B (CHB), liver cirrhosis (LC), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in this country. Recently, HBV-related acute on chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) has emerged as a serious and emergent medical problem in Bangladesh. To develop a strategy to address HBV-related problems and their influence on health care delivery system, proper understandings about extent of problems and nature of economic burden should be explored. Conservative estimates indicate that

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are among the most endemic pathogens worldwide, with more than 500 million people globally currently infected with these viruses. These pathogens can cause acute and chronic hepatitis that progress to liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Both viruses utilize multifaceted strategies to evade the host surveillance system and fall below the immunological radar. HBV has developed specific strategies to evade recognition by the innate immune system and is acknowledged to be a stealth virus. However, extensive research has revealed that HBV

We describe a case of autoimmune hepatitis diagnosed after acute hepatitis B. The patient was a 65-year-old man admitted because of markedly elevated transaminase level. Laboratory tests showed positive IgM-HBc antibody and a short prothorombin time. He was diagnosed as severe acute hepatitis B due to sexual transmission. He received lamivudine and steroid pulse therapy. Transaminase level increased again after steroid pulse therapy and liver atrophy progressed, so cyclosporine was induced. Liver biopsy was done because of prolonged liver function disorder. Biopsy specimens showed not only cen

Both hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses (HBV and HCV) cause chronic infections worldwide that are associated with development of liver diseases ranging from mild liver inflammation to hepatocellular carcinomas. While efficient preventive vaccines are available for HBV, efforts are ongoing to develop one in case of HCV. Yet, both infections share the fact that therapeutic agents available to treat already established infections are yet poorly efficient, toxic or associated with development of resistance. Thus, novel immune-based therapies are actively being developed to complement or replace s

An estimated 20-40 million individuals worldwide are infected with hepatitis delta virus (HDV), mostly with rapidly evolving liver disease. Therapy of chronic HDV infection remains an unmet need. To date, only interferon (IFN)-based therapy is recommended for HDV infection and response rates are unsatisfactory; in addition, many patients are intolerant to or ineligible for IFN treatment. In recent years, innovative approaches have been in development, including the following: targeting virus entry into hepatocytes; inhibition of the host enzyme farnesyltransferase by prenylation inhibitors, le
