Epistemic injustice in plain sight evidence from medical data.

Recent debates on epistemic injustice in healthcare stress both the need for clearer criteria and measurement (Nielsen et al. 2025) and the importance of methodological pluralism (Færge et al. 2026). I argue that, in some domains, epistemic injustice can already be inferred from existing medical data, without waiting for new standardized metrics. Focusing on women's diagnostic delay, I argue that well-documented patterns - such as delayed diagnosis, symptom misattribution, and prolonged patient intervals - provide evidence of underlying epistemic injustice. The analysis distinguishes three dim

The Lived Experience of Adults With Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Rural Areas: Phenomenological Study.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic gastrointestinal condition with a multifactorial etiology. It significantly impacts patients' quality of life, particularly, in rural areas where access to specialized care is limited. Challenges such as increased travel costs, social isolation, and restricted healthcare access are recognized, but their specific impact on rural Italian patients remains underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap. Using Cohen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 17 IBD

Bridging the Gap in Periodontal Health Knowledge: A Comprehensive Review of Awareness Levels and Barriers in Saudi Arabia.

Understanding of periodontal diseases and their broader health relevance is considered an important aspect to achieve better self-awareness of health. Therefore, this review aimed to explore the awareness levels of periodontium diseases among various locations and populations in Saudi Arabia. A comprehensive approach was used among multiple databases and search engines, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, focusing on awareness levels among the general population and vulnerable groups (such as diabetic patients and pregnant women), in addition to healthcare providers.

Gender stereotypes in psychosocial care for female crack and powder cocaine users.

The study analyzed health professionals' conceptions toward female users of crack and powder cocaine currently receiving psychosocial care, based on a gender perspective. Seventeen health professionals were interviewed, and systematic observations were made of the spaces for collective care in a Center for Psychosocial Care specializing in alcohol and drug addiction in Greater Metropolitan Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Analysis of the interviews and field diaries using the hermeneutic-dialectic method revealed three categories: frailty as a constitutive attribute of women's condition, the women's em

Becoming a caring nurse--a Nordic study on students' learning and development in clinical education.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the meaning and deepen the understanding of student learning and development in becoming a nurse. Data were collected from focus group interviews with students from three different universities and analysed using a phenomenological-hermeneutical method. The comprehensive understanding of student learning and development in becoming a nurse resulted in two constituents: the prerequisites for learning and development, and itineraries for learning and development. The prerequisites consisted of a caring relationship as the foundation for learning and develop

Patients' experiences in hospital following a liver transplantation.

Research is scarce regarding patients' experiences, feelings and thoughts the first 4 weeks after liver transplantation. Most research involving patients with a liver transplant are conducted several months, or even years, after the transplantation. The aim of this study is to present results from research interviews that took place post-transplant while patients still were in hospital. The design is explorative and hermeneutic. Fifteen patients were interviewed 3-5 weeks after transplantation. The results are presented in the following themes: (i) general contentment with the hospital stay, (

Against the odds or odds-on chance: pathways of coming back among hand-injured workers in the Chinese context.

In this study, I used a hermeneutic phenomenological approach by means of thematic analysis to examine the lived experiences of hand-injured workers in Hong Kong. Twenty-seven informants with moderate to severe disabilities were interviewed over ten years about how they lived through their disability and their discourses were examined in the cultural context. Three categories (survivors, achievers, strugglers) were synthesized from the informants' life courses. Each category was analyzed under three themes: biographical disruption, working with a disability, and linking family and significant

Narrative Complexity and Identity Formation in The Diary of Jack the Ripper.

The so-called Diary of Jack the Ripper purports to have been written by a Liverpool cotton merchant, James Maybrick, confessing to five infamous Victorian murders. However, researchers have rarely examined The Diary as a narrative in its own right. Debates about the diary's authenticity have relied on comparison with well-known fraudulent diaries, forensic and historical information. These examinations overlook how the writer tells his story across its 63 pages. Structural, hermeneutic and thematic analysis, as well the process of identity construction, shows the text building a framework to e

Sixteen participants-including nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals-were interviewed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach and analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis. Socio-family support for parents of technology-dependent extremely preterm infants after hospital discharge.

Parents of extremely preterm infants (<28 weeks of gestation) report high levels of stress and anxiety related to daily needs after hospital discharge. Social support has a significant role in reducing the negative psychological impact of preterm birth and parents' adaptation to caregiving. We conducted a hermeneutic phenomenological study using Gadamer's approach to explore and describe the experiences of parents of technology-dependent extremely preterm infants of socio-family support after hospital discharge. The study was conducted in four several Spanish organizations for families with pr

[Perceptions and interpretations of nurse-patient interactions--a qualitative study].

This study analyses the interaction between nurses and paraplegic patients who are indicative of chronically ill persons in their pursuit of self-determination and autonomy, concerning all aspects of life. The study aims at closing a gap in the research about nurse-patient interaction. Data were collected in two German hospitals. We used problem-focussed interviews with nurses and patients, and participant observation at three points of time during the process of mobilisation. Data were analysed by hermeneutic case-reconstruction. The focus of analysis was on themes that were important for pat

Rupture, repair, the loss and re-construction of identity: Seeking support in situations of adolescent-to-parent violence and abuse.

Family violence is associated with life-long implications including increased vulnerability to poor mental and physical health, and increased risk of repeat victimization. When children or adolescents are the ones instigating the harm, mothers experience the compounding issues of violence, mother-blame, and stigma. In comparison to other forms of family violence, how mothers understand and interpret their experiences of adolescent-to-parent violence and abuse (APVA) is underexplored, particularly in relation to what it means for them at the emotional and individual level, and how this impacts

Walking a tightrope - as a next-of-kin to an adolescent or young adult with cancer facing eating difficulties.

PURPOSE: Eating difficulties cause reduced food intake and poor quality of life among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer. Therefore, next-of-kin eating support is crucial. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of being close to AYAs with cancer in the context of eating when they are at home between high-emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC) sessions. METHOD: In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 next-of-kin to AYAs (15-29 years old) with oncological or haematological diseases, treated with HEC. Baruch Spinoza and the Ethics of Care: Towards A Monistic Understanding of Spiritual Care at the End of Life.

Dualism has shaped current healthcare based on the dichotomies of body-mind, science-spirituality and life-death, consolidating a biomedical paradigm that treats the patient as an object, marginalising the spiritual dimension. This article explores Baruch Spinoza's philosophy as an alternative to the ethics of nursing care, integrating the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions within the same ontological continuum. Through a philosophical-conceptual approach inspired by hermeneutic interpretation, key concepts from the work Ethics are presented, inviting the reader to reflect on them i
