Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has emerged as a key energy-efficient and cost-effective biological nitrogen removal process, yet its full-scale implementation remains hampered by the intrinsic slow growth of anammox bacteria, high environmental sensitivity, and strict nitrite dependence. Increasing evidence identifies iron as a crucial but double-edged modulator of anammox systems, with roles acting across enzymatic, microbial, and engineering scales. The impacts of iron are highly dependent on its speciation, i.e. soluble species act as indispensable enzyme cofactors and electron shut

Nitrogen is often a limiting nutrient in natural habitats. Therefore, cyanobacteria have developed multiple responses, which are controlled by transcription factor NtcA and the PII-signaling protein, to adapt to nitrogen deficiency. Transcriptional analyses of Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 under nitrogen-deficient conditions revealed a highly induced gene (sll0783) which is annotated as encoding a conserved protein with an unknown function. This gene is part of a cluster of seven genes and has potential NtcA-binding sites in the upstream region. Homologues of this cluster occur in some uni

In the anoxic stage of anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2/O) process, similar to the anaerobic stage, sulfate can be reduced by sulfate-reducing bacteria to sulfide, threatening human health and environmental security. Without affecting nitrogen removal, utilizing nitrate refluxed from the oxic stage to directly interfere with sulfide conversion might be an effective strategy for in-situ sulfide control. Herein, the performance and mechanism of nitrate reduction on inhibiting sulfate reduction and controlling sulfide were explored for the first time in a lab-scale anoxic bioreactor in depth. The result

As a result of human activity, Earth's atmosphere and climate are changing at an unprecedented pace. Models based on short-term experiments predict major changes will occur in marine phytoplankton communities in the future ocean, but rarely consider how evolution or interactions with other microbes may influence these changes. Here, we experimentally evolved several phytoplankton in coculture with a heterotrophic bacterium, Alteromonas sp. EZ55, under either present-day or predicted future pCO2 conditions. Growth rates of phytoplankton generally increased over time under both conditions, but o

There is an elevated presence of mercury (Hg) in the biosphere because of anthropogenic activities. The resulting damage to ecosystems and human health increases dramatically when microorganisms produce highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). Total Hg (THg), MeHg and ancillary water chemistry were measured in two connected lakes, separated by a short stream stretch, before (1996, 1998 and 2003) and after (2007, 2009 and 2010) the removal of Hg-polluted pulp fiber sediment. Over the study period, there was a decrease in sulfate in the surface water of both lakes, presumably because of declining atmo

Vanadium(V) is a redox-sensitive heavy-metal contaminant whose environmental mobility is strongly influenced by pyrrhotite, a widely distributed iron sulfide mineral. However, relatively little is known about microbially mediated vanadate [V(V)] reduction characteristics driven by pyrrhotite and concomitant mineral dynamics in this process. This study demonstrated efficient V(V) bioreduction during 210 d of operation, with a lifespan about 10 times longer than abiotic control, especially in a stable period when the V(V) removal efficiency reached 44.1 ± 13.8%. Pyrrhotite oxidation coupled to V

The aim of this study was to expand the International Water Association Activated Sludge Model No. 2d (ASM2d) to account for a newly defined readily biodegradable substrate that can be consumed by polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) under anoxic and aerobic conditions, but not under anaerobic conditions. The model change was to add a new substrate component and process terms for its use by PAOs and other heterotrophic bacteria under anoxic and aerobic conditions. The Gdansk (Poland) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), which has a modified University of Cape Town (MUCT) process for nutri

H. pylori is a gram-negative bacterium associated with gastric inflammation and peptic ulcer and considered a risk factor for gastric cancer in its natural habitat. However, the energy metabolism of H. pylori in the stomach remains to be clarified. H. pylori shows rather high respiratory activity with L-proline and significantly large amounts of L-proline are present in the gastric juice from H. pylori infected patients. We constructed a disrupted mutant of the put A gene, which encodes the proline utilization A (Put A) flavin-linked enzyme, in order to examine the role of put A in the gastric

Sulfur disproportionation (SDP), a microbial metabolism that couples the oxidation and reduction of intermediate-valence sulfur compounds, is increasingly recognized as a key process in both natural sulfur cycling and engineered environmental systems. Despite growing interest, our understanding of SDP remains incomplete, and its practical significance has often been overlooked. This critical review integrates recent advances in ecophysiology, molecular mechanisms, and reactor-scale applications to establish a unified framework and provide practical guiding principles for SDP. We first summariz

The identification of arsenic-contamination hotspots in alluvial aquifers is a global-scale challenge. The collection and inventory of arsenic concentration datasets in the shallow-aquifer domain of affected alluvial basins is a tedious and slow process, given the magnitude of the problem. Recent research demonstrates that oxbow-lake biogeochemistry in alluvial plains, mobilization of geogenic arsenic, and accumulation in geomorphologically well-defined areas are interacting processes that determine arsenic-contamination locations. This awareness provides a tool to identify potential arsenic-h

Nitrogen recovery from wastewater is essential for resource-oriented and circular wastewater treatment but remains challenging. This study developed a coupled process integrating ion exchange, cyclic up-concentration via regeneration and side-stream nitrification, and electrodialysis to recover high-purity NaNO3 from municipal wastewater. NaNO3 was an effective and process-compatible regenerant for NH4+-loaded exchanger, producing a concentrated ammonium stream. The side-stream nitrification reactor (SNR) maintained stable and complete nitrification under high-salinity, autotrophic conditions

In this study, we evaluated the ability of various pilot-scale treatment train combinations to meet the microbial requirements of the new European non-potable water reuse regulation 2020/741. The study utilized non-disinfected secondary effluent from the wastewater treatment plant in Schweinfurt, Germany, as feedwater for two pilot-scale treatment trains. The first, a reference treatment train (Train A), consisted of filtration and UV disinfection as specified for reclaimed water class A in the EU regulation. The second, an advanced treatment train (Train B), included ceramic ultrafiltration (

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are the most frequently observed micropollutants in the effluents of conventional wastewater treatment plants and hybrid technologies could be an alternative to conventional systems. However, the effect on micropollutants' removal has not been well studied. In this study, the impact of hybrid systems on micropollutant removal, as well as the determination of the dominant microbial communities, were investigated. For this purpose, laboratory-scale control hybrid and micropollutant-amended (1 μg/L of diclofenac, ketoprofen, indomethacin, and mefenamic

Artificial aeration has been considered to be the most effective method to enhance the nitrogen removal efficiency of constructed wetlands (CWs) under low carbon-nitrogen (C/N) ratio conditions. However, it is worth noting that enhancing nitrogen removal in intermittently aerated CWs often exacerbates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions making the wetlands become a carbon source. The synergistic effect of using a biodegradable polymer, poly (butylene succinate) (PBS), as a solid carbon source to address this challenge remains obscure. This study established three vertical flow CWs: a non-aerated co

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a promising technology for mainstream nitrogen removal. However, its application is limited by unstable partial nitrification (PN) and inadequate retention of anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) in flocs. To overcome these bottlenecks, this study established a flocs-based continuous-flow anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) system coupled with a side-stream anaerobic fermenter. By introducing sludge fermentation liquid (SFL) and an anaerobic transfer line, the system was strategically shifted from unstable partial nitrification-denitrification to a

Cerebral malaria (CM) is a life-threatening form of Plasmodium falciparum infection caused by brain inflammation. Brain endothelium dysfunction is a hallmark of CM pathology, which is also associated with the activation of the type I interferon (IFN) inflammatory pathway. The molecular triggers and sensors eliciting brain type I IFN cellular responses during CM remain largely unknown. We herein identified the stimulator of interferon response cGAMP interactor 1 (STING1) as the key innate immune sensor that induces Ifnβ1 transcription in the brain of mice infected with Plasmodium berghei ANKA (

Providing clean and safe drinking water by point of use (POU) disinfection methods has become a critical issue, especially in crises and epidemics. In this study, antimony-and nickel-doped tin oxide electrode (Ni-Sb-SnO2) was employed as an electrode for electro-catalytic disinfection of surface water. The synthetized electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscope, linear sweep voltammetry and X-Ray diffraction techniques. The results revealed that the highest electrochemical disinfection efficiency was achieved by the Ni-Sb-SnO2 electrode under weak acidic conditions and its

Here, we analyze the status and future trends in the study of medicinal mushrooms (MMs) in agriculture and biomedicine. Fruiting bodies of mushrooms are heterotrophic organisms that obtain all their nutritive requirements from the substrate. Mushroom substrates are agro-industrial plant residues and forest byproducts, which are usually called lignocellulosic materials. A good substrate for mushroom growth must be suitable both chemically and physically, as well as have the proper conditions for microbial activities. Under suitable conditions, mushrooms can excrete key enzymes for unlocking ind

BACKGROUND: Interest in processing high-tonnage biodiesel production waste (crude glycerol and microalgal biomass after lipid extraction) into commercial products is steadily growing. Moreover, it is attractive to utilize these wastes for the microbiological production of fumaric acid (FA) using immobilized microorganisms, as it combines chemical and biological processes.
METHODS: The authors developed original approaches to FA production, which immobilize microalgal Chlorella vulgaris cells and the mycelium of the fungus Rhyzopus oryzae. Traditional techniques were employed for cultivating m

Progressive global ocean changes, including ocean acidification and warming, are expected to impact ecosystems differentially due to regional environmental differences that govern biogeochemical and ecological processes. In this study, we investigated the impacts of ocean acidification and warming on the phytoplankton community and primary productivity in the southern coastal water of the East China Sea by running land-based mesocosms controlled under current atmospheric pCO2 (∼430 μatm) and projected levels for the year 2100 (∼1000 μatm, HC, High CO2) at 27 °C (ambient) and 30 °C (warming, HT
