BACKGROUND: The Harris-Galante (HG) prosthesis is a first-generation, cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) prosthesis. Considering the recent increase in the demand for THA in young patients and their life expectancy, a study with a follow-up duration of longer than 20 years in a young population is needed. Therefore, we evaluated the long-term clinical and radiographic results after cementless THA using the HG prosthesis in patients younger than 50 years.
METHODS: A total of 61 THAs performed using the HG with a minimum follow-up of 10 years were included. There were 38 men and 11 women w

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the mid- and long-term effectiveness of total hip arthroplasty (THA) with Ribbed femoral stem prosthesis.
METHODS: A clinical data of 354 patients (384 hips) with hip disease who underwent THA with Ribbed femoral stem prostheses between October 2006 and May 2016 was retrospectively analyzed. There were 171 males and 183 females, with an average age of 53.4 years (range, 20-82 years). There were 324 cases of single hip and 30 cases of bilateral hips. The cause of THA included the avascular necrosis of the femoral head in 151 cases (159 hips), hip osteoarthritis in 134 ca

INTRODUCTION: Revision arthroplasty is currently the recommended treatment for periprosthetic femoral fractures after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and stem loosening (Vancouver B2). However, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) utilizing locking compression plate (LCP) might be an effective treatment with a reduced surgical time and less complex procedure in a typically elderly patient collective with multiple comorbidities. The purpose of this study was to compare the functional and radiographic outcomes in two cohorts with Vancouver B2 periprosthetic femoral fractures after pr

AIM: Total hip arthroplasty in patients with a Crowe type IV developmental dysplasia is a technically demanding procedure with a higher complication rate compared to a standard total hip replacement. Specific anatomic features and the necessity of a femoral shortening osteotomy are the reasons for more complications. In this retrospective study we intended to find out whether the use of a custom-made stem based on a CT scan will lead to a better outcome including a lower complication rate. MATERIAL UND METHOD: From 2003 to 2010 we implanted a cementless CTX® individual stem in combination with

Long-term clinical results of Harris-Galante type prosthesis in total hip arthroplasty (THA) were evaluated in 27 hip joints of 25 patients (2 men and 23 women). Seventeen joints also received bone grafting on the acetabulum. Mean follow-up period was 11 years and 3 months. Clinical out-come was evaluated using the hip score of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association, and the score was good and stable during the monitoring period. Implant stability, bone changes around the implant, and the occupancy rate of the stem in the medullary space were radiologically examined. As a result of stem, there w

Between March 13, 1984 and March 28, 1988, 233 patients (age range from 21 to 73 years) with osteoarthritis of one or both hips were treated with the uncemented hip replacement "Erlanger Modell" (Prof. H. Beck/P. Brehm Chirurgie-Mechanik GmbH). The cause of the osteoarthritis was variable. Hip replacement was carried out for the following conditions: rheumatoid arthritis including ankylosing spondylits (n = 29), aseptic necrosis of the femoral head including posttraumatic and idiopathic forms (n = 17), osteoarthritis of unknown origin (n = 111), osteoarthritis following dysplasia or subluxatio

Hip joint prostheses are used to replace hip joint function in the human body. The latest dual-mobility hip joint prosthesis has an additional component of an outer liner that acts as a cover for the liner component. Research on the contact pressure generated on the latest model of a dual-mobility hip joint prosthesis under a gait cycle has never been done before. The model is made of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) on the inner liner and 316L stainless steel (SS 316L) on the outer liner and acetabular cup. Simulation modeling using the finite element method is considered stat

We present a model to estimate the osteolysis-free life of total hip arthroplasty, depending on linear wear rate and femoral head size. An estimate of the radiologic osteolysis threshold was calculated, which was based on volumetric wear. The osteolysis-free life of the cup was estimated from the quotient of the osteolysis threshold and volumetric wear rate, which was calculated from the linear wear rate. The impact of the direction of linear wear was determined by sensitivity analysis. From our review, we calculated a weighted mean polyethylene volume of approximately 670 mm3 as osteolysis th

BACKGROUND: Osseointegrated implants are a suitable alternative for prosthetic attachment in individuals with a transfemoral amputation, who are unable to wear a socket. However, the small bone-implant contact area, reduced muscular leverage, and osteoporosis contraindicate osseointegrated implant use in transfemoral amputees with osteoporosis and a short residuum. We report on the feasibility of combining total hip replacement (THR) with an osseointegrated implant for prosthetic attachment.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of three transfemoral amputees who underwent osseointeg

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that the use of a short-stem prosthesis could conserve proximal bone by proximal load transfer. Proximal stress shielding should be reduced, a phenomenon that has been associated with bone resorption around traditional stems. Bone remodelling of a metaphyseal fixed stem (Nanos, Smith & Nephew Int.) was analysed by the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: This study included 36 patients undergoing the total hip replacement using the Nanos short stem in comparison to 36 patients operated by a traditional long-stemmed femoral stem (Alloclassic)

The ESKA femoral neck prosthesis introduces a new metaphyseal anchorage principle for total hip replacements. Primary stability of the conical-oval shaped implant is achieved through the use of a lateral traction screw, and permanent stability through bony growth into the macroporous TRIPO metal structure. The system is used in combination with the standard ESKA acetabulum, and metal-polyethylene, ceramic-polyethylene, ceramic-ceramic and metal-metal articulations are all possible.

INTRODUCTION: The proximal femur is the most common long bone affected by metastatic disease. Pathologic fractures in this area are frequent, secondary to weight-bearing and deforming forces. Long-stem endoprosthetic replacement is often used to replace and bypass segments affected by metastases. However, implant cost remains prohibitive for patients in low-resource settings. An improvised megaprosthesis using a hip implant combined with Kuntscher nail provides an economic option.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a case series of three patients diagnosed with pathologic fracture of the hip secon

OBJECTIVE: To explore safe zones for acetabular prosthesis implantation in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) at different anterior pelvic plane tilts (APPt), and to determine the optimal implantation angle of the prosthesis through the safe zones with different ranges of motion. To explore the influencing factors of size and scope of the safe zone.
METHODS: CT data of pelvis before total hip arthroplasty (THA) in a 54-year-old male patient with Tonnis stage Ⅳ left hip arthritis, and virtual THA simulated by computer prosthesis with a femoral head diameter of 32 mm, a head-to-neck rati

INTRODUCTION: Dislocation after bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty is an uncommon complication. Although closed manoeuvre reduction under general anaesthesia is a common and effective method for dislocation of the hemiarthroplasty. However, closed reduction leads to preprosthesis fracture of femoral and loosening of femoral prosthesis is a rare situation, which requires incision reduction and a revision hemiarthroplasty.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 80-year-old female had cementless bipolar hip hemiarthroplasty due to a right femoral neck fracture. At the 11 days of postoperation, the patient had a disl

INTRODUCTION: Anterior dislocation is a rare complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA). There exist only three cases in the literature. None of them report disassembly of the prosthesis components. We present a morbidly obese woman who suffered an irreducible obturator dislocation of an infected total hip arthroplasty (THA), due to uncontrolled adduction during an early debridement surgery. Following unsuccessful closed reduction attempts, a Vancouver B2 periprosthetic fracture and disassembly of the prosthetic components were observed. Two-stage revision THA was necessary to resolve the in

BACKGROUND: Disarticulation has been used less and less often in the treatment of musculoskeletal neoplasms; however, in some cases it allows the patient to achieve good oncological and functional outcomes. The aim of this paper is to present the possibilities, surgical technique and treatment outcomes of patients after hip disarticulation and stump lengthening with a modular prosthesis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three classic hip disarticulation surgeries and 2 hip disarticulation procedures with stump lengthening with a modular prosthesis were performed at the Department of Oncological Orthopae

BACKGROUND: Female patients undergoing hip resurfacing arthroplasties may be at greater risk of revision surgery than males, but it is unclear whether this is related to sex or other factors. We focused our analysis on data from a prospective multicenter cohort study monitoring the ASR(TM) hip resurfacing arthroplasty prosthesis on the potential association of sex on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), metal ion levels, revision surgery, and presence of adverse local tissue reaction. As thousands of patients with the ASR(TM) prosthesis are still undergoing followup it is critical to opt
