Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized primarily by difficulty discarding possessions, leading to severe clutter and significant distress and impairment. Although promising psychological treatments have emerged, treating HD remains a clinical challenge. A greater understanding of the role of psychological vulnerability factors in predicting hoarding symptoms in a clinical HD sample could further enhance treatments. To investigate the role of proposed individual difference factors (i.e., distress tolerance, anxiety sensitivity, intolerance of uncertainty), we administered a diagnostic and self

This study estimated the prevalence of hoarding disorder (HD) in individuals seeking help from Eviction Intervention Services Housing Research Center (EIS), a not-for-profit community organization in New York City (NYC) that aids clients with housing problems including eviction. One hundred fifteen EIS clients were screened for HD. The prevalence of HD among those seeking help from EIS was 22% (clinician-rated) and 23% (self-rated), which is nearly 5 to 10 times greater than the rate of hoarding (2% to 5%) in the general population. Of individuals seeking help from EIS who met the criteria for

Hoarding disorder is a debilitating psychological disorder that is difficult to treat. Poor treatment response to current interventions indicates that new perspectives are needed. This systematic review examines qualitative and case study research on patient-centred strategies for reducing hoarding disorder symptoms and improving wellbeing. We conducted a comprehensive search of PsycInfo, Medline Complete, CINAHL, SocINDEX and Scopus in May 2025 to identify peer-reviewed qualitative research and case studies, published in English that examined hoarding disorder patients' first-hand experiences

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals who meet criteria for compulsive buying-shopping disorder (i.e., acquiring problems only) or hoarding disorder (i.e., acquiring and discarding problems) may acquire possessions to compensate for unmet belonging needs, but may do so in different ways. Those with compulsive buying-shopping disorder may acquire objects that they believe will relieve the distress associated with unmet belonging needs (e.g., objects that distract or comfort), whereas those with hoarding disorder may acquire objects that they believe achieve belonging needs (e.g., objects that have i

Hoarded homes can pose a threat to public safety, with heightened risks of fire hazards, pest infestations and noxious odours in both the home and neighbouring dwellings. Communities across North America are responding to these public safety concerns through a harm reduction approach. This descriptive study explores the implementation and outcomes of the City of Vancouver's approach involving a partnership between fire prevention and public health. Data were collected from the team's 2016-2018 case tracking systems, consisting of health records and team intervention record, as well as notes ta

OBJECTIVE: Adults with hoarding disorder report high levels of subjective cognitive impairment which have largely gone undetected in formal testing in laboratory settings; this discrepancy may be due to the testing environment.
METHOD: This study examined associations between cognitive performance and hoarding severity in a sample of older adults diagnosed with hoarding disorder (N = 52) using the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery administered in participants' homes.
RESULTS: Participants demonstrated a cognitive profile that included weaknesses in attention, executive function, and processing s

The prevalence of disordered eating is reportedly high in people with hoarding behaviours, and both eating disorders (ED) and hoarding disorder (HD) show strong associations with anxiety/depression. There is also some evidence that both may be underpinned by aspects of perfectionism. In a non-clinical sample of 252 adults (187 females) we explored possible relationships between disordered eating and hoarding severity, and assessed the relationships between hoarding, eating disorders and perfectionism. After controlling for gender and mood (anxiety and depression) we found significant positive

BACKGROUND: It is suggested that the different psychological vulnerability factors of intolerance of uncertainty (IU), anxiety sensitivity (AS) and distress tolerance (DT) may be in important in hoarding disorder (HD). However, the extent to which these factors are specific to HD compared with other disorders remains unclear.
AIMS: The current study aimed to investigate differences in IU, AS and DT in three groups: HD (n=66), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD; n=59) and healthy controls (HCs; n=63).
METHOD: Participants completed an online battery of standardised self-report measures to est

Climate change and the consequent alteration in agricultural circumstances enhance the susceptibility of fresh water use particularly in water-scarce regions. Marginal quality water reuse is a common alternative practice but possible perils of metal accretion in plant parts are mostly ignored. The present research aimed to probe the impact of treated wastewater (TWW) and untreated wastewater (UTWW) on metal accumulation in flower petals and their influence on essential oil contents of fragrant Rosa species (R. Gruss-an-teplitz, R. bourboniana, R. centifolia, R. damascena) in a peri-urban area

Despite vulnerability and unsanitary conditions of animal hoarding may predispose environmental contamination and spread of vectors and pathogens, no study to date has focused on their impact on public health and zoonotic diseases. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and associated factors in individuals with animal hoarding disorder (AHD) and their dogs in Curitiba, Southern Brazil. Blood samples were obtained from 264 dogs (21 households) and 19 individuals with AHD (11 households). Their blood was tested by indirect fluorescent ant

OBJECTIVE: Although adult hoarding disorder is relatively common and often debilitating, few studies have examined the phenomenology of pediatric hoarding. We examined the clinical phenomenology and response to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment in youths with a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with and without hoarding symptoms. Age was tested as a moderator across analyses, given prior findings that the impact of hoarding symptoms may not become apparent until adolescence.
METHOD: Youths (N = 215; aged 7-17 years) with OCD pursuing evaluation and/or treatment at a

Fasting triggers a constellation of physiological and behavioral changes, including increases in peripherally produced ghrelin and centrally produced hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY). Refeeding stimulates food intake in most species; however, hamsters primarily increase foraging and food hoarding with smaller increases in food intake. Fasting-induced increases in foraging and food hoarding in Siberian hamsters are mimicked by peripheral ghrelin, central NPY, and NPY Y1 receptor agonist injections. Because fasting stimulates ghrelin and subsequently NPY synthesis/release, it may be that fastin

UNLABELLED: Hoarding disorder (HD) has been consistently linked to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and ADHD patients show high rates of HD comorbidity. However, no studies have investigated the effects of ADHD medications on hoarding symptoms in patients with a primary diagnosis of ADHD. Thus, the aim of this naturalistic study was to investigate the long-term changes of hoarding symptoms among adult ADHD patients after at least one year of treatment with methylphenidate.
METHODS: 60 newly diagnosed adult ADHD outpatients underwent a psychometric assessment which included hoa

Hoarding, common in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), has specific clinical correlates and is associated with poor prognosis. However, there are few studies of hoarding in pediatric OCD. This study estimates the occurrence of hoarding symptoms in a sample of children and adolescents with OCD, investigating possible differences in demographic and clinical variables between pediatric OCD with and without hoarding symptoms. Furthermore, the study investigates whether hoarding symptoms predict poorer treatment outcomes after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The study sample compris

Cognitive-behavioral models of hoarding disorder emphasize impairments in information processing and decision making in the genesis of hoarding symptomology. We propose and test the novel hypothesis that individuals with hoarding are maladaptively biased towards a deliberative decision style. While deliberative strategies are often considered normative, they are not always adaptable to the limitations imposed by many real-world decision contexts. We examined decision-making patterns in 19 individuals with hoarding and 19 healthy controls, using a behavioral task that quantifies selection of de

A genome scan of the hoarding phenotype (a component of obsessive-compulsive disorder) was conducted on 77 sib pairs collected by the Tourette Syndrome Association International Consortium for Genetics (TSAICG). All sib pairs were concordant for a diagnosis of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). However, the analyses reported here were conducted for hoarding as both a dichotomous trait and a quantitative trait. Not all sib pairs in the sample were concordant for hoarding. Standard linkage analyses were performed using GENEHUNTER and Haseman-Elston methods. In addition, novel analyses with a

In forest ecosystems where seed dispersal is predominantly mediated by scatter-hoarding rodents, sympatric plants compete for these limited dispersal services. This competition can drive niche differentiation, prompting the question of how ecologically similar species achieve coexistence. To address this, we conducted a seed provisioning experiment in the Ailao Mountains, Yunnan Province, China. We released 4500 tagged seeds from three congeneric species of stone oaks (Lithocarpus hancei, Lithocarpus xylocarpus, and Lithocarpus pachyphyllus; Fagaceae) to compare their seed dispersal effectiven
