Comparison of Treatment Receipt and Hospitalization Among Patients With Stimulant Use Disorder and/or Opioid Use Disorder in the Veterans Health Administration.

OBJECTIVES: Stimulant use is a growing problem, but little is known about service utilization among patients with stimulant use disorder (StUD). In the context of the overdose crisis, much research has focused on patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). It is unclear how the characteristics, treatment receipt, and hospitalization of patients with StUD differ from patients with OUD. METHODS: Electronic health record data were extracted for national Veterans Health Administration patients with a visit from March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021 with StUD and/or OUD (N = 132,273). We compared patie

Examining adverse childhood experiences and Black youth's engagement in a hospital-based violence intervention program using administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Stemming from poverty and systemic racism, Black youth are disproportionately represented in hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) due to greater violence exposure. HVIPs are a critical intervention that have been shown to reduce rates of reinjury in urban hospitals and trauma centers across the United States; however, they are plagued by low enrollment and engagement rates. Few studies have examined factors related to engagement, particularly among Black youth. METHODS: Guided by Trauma Theory and Critical Race Theory, this study uses a retrospective cohort design

Exploration of factors affecting denosumab-induced hypocalcemia in male patients with osteoporosis using a hospital-based administrative claims database.

OBJECTIVES: Factors affecting denosumab-induced hypocalcemia in male patients with osteoporosis remain unclear because of the small patient population. Nevertheless, it is important to explore male-specific risk factors. This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the development of denosumab-induced hypocalcemia in male patients with osteoporosis and compare them with those in female patients with osteoporosis. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective, observational study used data from a hospital-based administrative claims database. Patients with osteoporosis undergoing denosumab treatment

Improvement in Palivizumab Administration Prior to Discharge for Hospitalized Infants with Hemodynamically Significant Congenital Heart Disease: A Quality Improvement Initiative.

In this quality improvement initiative, we aimed to increase provider adherence with palivizumab administration guidelines for hospitalized infants with hemodynamically significant congenital heart disease. We included 470 infants over four respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) seasons from 11/2017 to 03/2021 (baseline season: 11/2017-03/2018). Interventions included the following: education, including palivizumab in the sign-out template, identifying a pharmacy expert, and a text alert (seasons 1 and 2: 11/2018-03/2020) that was replaced by an electronic health record (EHR) best practice alert (B

Major Adverse Renal and Cardiovascular Events following Intra-Arterial Contrast Media Administration in Hospitalized Patients with Comorbid Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have demonstrated lower incidence of adverse renal and cardiovascular outcomes associated with the use of iso-osmolar contrast media (IOCM) than low-osmolar contrast media (LOCM) in patients with variable risk profiles undergoing intra-arterial interventional procedures. However, the association of contrast-type and major adverse renal and cardiovascular events (MARCE) has not been studied via comprehensive and robust real-world data analyses in patients with comorbid conditions considered at risk for post-procedural acute kidney injury

[Catheter ablation in hospitalized patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation: real-world evidence from Italian health administrative databases.].

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation (CA) is recommended for treating paroxysmal/persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) as an alternative to antiarrhythmic drugs after failure or intolerance, or as first-line in limited cases. This study has described patients affected by AF and treated or not with CA, from the perspective of the Italian National Healthcare System (INHS). METHODS: From the healthcare administrative data collected in the ReS (Ricerca e Salute) database, from 2016 to 2017, patients with main/secondary diagnosis of AF (index date) were split into two cohorts by presence/absence of CA proc

Sensitivity and specificity of an algorithm based on medico-administrative data to identify hospitalized patients with major bleeding presenting to an emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Validation studies on an ICD-10-based algorithm to identify major bleeding events are scarce, and mostly focused on positive predictive values. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of an ICD-10-based algorithm in adult patients referred to hospital. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, retrospective analysis. Among all hospital stays of adult patients referred to Rennes University Hospital, France, through the emergency ward in 2014, we identified major bleeding events according to an index test based on a list of ICD-10 diagnoses. As a reference, a two-step pro

Effects of Tolvaptan With or Without the Pre-Administration of Renin-Angiotensin System Blockers in Hospitalized Patients With Acute Decompensated Heart Failure.

We examined whether tolvaptan combined with an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) is more effective than tolvaptan alone in the treatment of patients with heart failure (HF). Sixty-five hospitalized patients with acute decompensated HF were included in this study. They were divided into 2 groups; an ARB/ACE-I group (n = 44, who received ARB or ACE-I before the use of tolvaptan) and a non-ARB/ACE-I group (n = 21). There were no significant differences in patient characteristics including medications at baseline between the non-ARB/ACE-I and

[An a priori risk analysis study. Securisation of transfusion of blood product in a hospital: from the reception in the medical unit to its administration].

Following an ABO accident after transfusion of red blood cells, an a priori risk analysis study is being performed in a hospital. The scope of this analysis covers from the reception of the blood product in the medical unit to its administration. The risk analysis enables to identify the potentially dangerous situations and the evaluation of the risks in order to propose corrective measures (precautionary or protective) and bring the system back to an acceptable risk level. The innovative concept of an a priori risk analysis in the medical field allows the extension of the analysis of this tra

Risk factors for healthcare-associated urinary tract infection and their applications in surveillance using hospital administrative data: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated urinary tract infections (HCA UTI) account for a large proportion of hospital infections, with recently launched surveillance in the UK focusing on reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections. However, a wealth of administrative information already collected routinely by hospitals is currently not used to its maximum potential for surveillance. AIM: To quantify the evidence base of HCA UTI risk factors and to determine their potential for shaping and informing innovative surveillance tools using local hospital data. METHODS: A systematic literature

Injury and death associated with hospital bed side-rails: reports to the US Food and Drug Administration from 1985 to 1995.

OBJECTIVES: Hospital bed side-rails, while intended for patient protection, can contribute to injury and death. Reports to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of hospital bed side-rail entrapment have increased. In this paper entrapment cases are reviewed and the population potentially at risk identified. METHODS: FDA's database was searched for events involving hospital beds from January 1985 to August 1995 and entrapment cases were identified. RESULTS: Of 111 entrapments, 65% were associated with death and 23% with injury. CONCLUSIONS: Advanced age, female sex, low body weight, and cog
