Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders for Nurses in Hospitals, Long-Term Care Facilities, and Home Health Care: A Comprehensive Review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and reported injuries for nurses and nursing aides. BACKGROUND: Nurses and nursing aides suffer from work-related pain and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Although there have been a plethora of studies on MSDs, an overall understanding of the prevalence of MSDs and pain can lead to better prioritization of research needs with respect to the health care industry. METHOD: A total of 132 articles on prevalence of MSD pain and injuries were included in the review. All articles were published in peer-review

"You're already starting from behind" - Nurses' perspectives on trust, mistrust, and structural constraints in informal caregiver interactions: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers play a growing role in clinical care, yet the relational dynamics between nurses and caregivers remain understudied. In healthcare systems shaped by time scarcity, institutional pressures, and identity-based assumptions, trust-building with informal caregivers is a complex and emotionally demanding process for nurses. PURPOSE: This study explores how nurses perceive and navigate trust-building with informal caregivers, particularly in the context of structural constraints and prior caregiver mistrust. METHODS: Seventeen nurses practicing in inpatient and acute

Women's experiences of communication with medical staff before and after emergency caesarean birth in Zambia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Communication between patients and staff during emergency caesarean birth is important for ensuring positive outcomes and reducing the negative psychological impact of the procedure. Communication failures have been linked to obstetric violence, mistrust, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This study aimed to explore patient-healthcare provider communication before and after emergency caesarean birth at the University Teaching Hospitals, Women and Newborn Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative phenomenological design to explore the lived experience

Wearable Multispectral Sensor for Newborn Jaundice Monitoring.

Newborn immaturity transcends their bodies, immune systems, and communication and perception capabilities, making them vulnerable to the environment. Neonatal jaundice is a common condition, with higher levels of unconjugated bilirubin concentration having neurotoxic effects. Newborns are routinely monitored visually or non-invasively with transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TcB) due to their biological immaturity to conjugate bilirubin. Higher levels of bilirubin are a sign that there is either an unusual rate of red blood cells breaking down or that the liver is not able to eliminate bilirubin t

Communicating in a community mental health system.

In a multicentered mental health system in which the population has a choice of several treatment facilities, common problems such as geographical distance and infrequent contacts between agencies lead to interagency distrust, unrealistic expectations about patient care, and fears of being overburdened by other agencies. These problems are compounded by the passive bureaucratic attitude which pervades many community mental health systems: unwillingness to do more than the minimum; cunning efforts to send difficult patients to other parts of the mental health system (such as "sending patients b

COVID-19 symptomatic community illness, hospitalization, and death burden across all ages - New South Wales, Australia, May 2021-July 2022.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) burden is difficult to quantify with cases missed by surveillance systems. During COVID-19 Delta and Omicron BA.1-5 periods, we assessed the COVID-19 burden in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, from May 2021-July 2022 using a participatory surveillance system of self-reported respiratory disease and a database of people seeking healthcare. METHODS: To estimate community illness burden, we adjusted the NSW age-stratified non-case population by reported severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) percent positive and acute respira

Comparative impact of hospital-acquired infections on medical costs, length of hospital stay and outcome between community hospitals and medical centres.

To understand the impact of hospital-acquired infections on mortality and medical costs in modern medical care systems in different healthcare settings, we performed a case-control study at a medical centre and two community hospitals. A total of 144 and 129 adult case-control pairs who received care in a 2000-bed tertiary referral medical centre and two 800-bed community hospitals, respectively, between October 2002 and December 2002 were enrolled. Prolongation of hospital stay, extra costs and complications associated with hospital-acquired infections were analysed. Patients in the medical c

Implementation planning for community-based point-of-care HIV testing for infants: Recommendations from community leaders in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Early infant diagnosis (EID) establishes the presence of HIV infection in HIV-exposed infants and children younger than 18 months of age. EID services are hospital-based, and thus fail to capture HIV-exposed infants who are not brought to the hospital for care. Point-of-care (POC) diagnostic systems deployed in the community could increase the proportion tested and linked to treatment, but little feasibility and acceptability data is available. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews (n = 74) were conducted by a Kenyan team with community members (Community Health Workers/Volunteers [

Patterns in childhood sports injury.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this epidemiologic study is twofold: first, to determine the relative frequency of sports-related injuries compared with all musculoskeletal injuries in patients 5 to 21 years of age presenting to the emergency department (ED), and second, to evaluate the sports-specific and anatomic site-specific nature of these injuries. METHODS: Patterns of injury in patients 5 to 21 years of age presenting to four pediatric EDs with musculoskeletal injuries in October 1999 and April 2000 were prospectively studied. Information collected included age, sex, injury type, anatomical

Chasing Zero: A Nurse-Driven Process for Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Reduction In a Community Hospital.

Due to treatment costs and lack of reimbursement, community hospitals are charged with implementing innovative strategies that will reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). A nurse-driven system for decreasing the number of hospital-acquired CAUTI is effective and useful for a community hospital. One nurse with accountability for implementing a simple evidence-based protocol can dramatically decrease the total incidence of hospital-acquired CAUTI. The basis for the success of this initiative relied heavily on the ease of using the eight-po

Psychiatric care in the Middle East: a "mental health supermarket" in the town of Lod.

It is often in times of political tension and hostilities that community mental health care is neglected. We describe a novel and creative community mental health program where a combination of professional mental health workers and an innovative mental health system network combine to provide a remarkably successful and tension free mental health care arrangement in an area of high political and intergroup hostility. The system, termed the "mental health supermarket," encompasses multi-component rehabilitation, hospital liaison and interagency collaborative care. The framework succeeds in set

Improving agricultural injury surveillance: a comparison of incidence and type of injury event among three data sources.

BACKGROUND: Agriculture ranks as one of the most hazardous industries in the nation. Ongoing injury surveillance is key to identifying and preventing major sources of injury. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the total number and types of injuries identified from community reporting versus two newly available medical data systems. These new systems are important because they are less time consuming and expensive to maintain. METHOD: Farm injury case records from 2007 were collected for 10 NY counties from the following sources: ambulance reports, hospital data, and commun

Standardization as a mechanism to improve safety in health care.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature shows that when patterns of care are widely divergent, clinical outcomes suffer and, as a result, safety may be compromised. A multispecialty group at Luther Midelfort, Mayo Health System (LM, MHS) initiated efforts to reduce variance in the clinical practice patterns of providers. The pilot initiative, which entailed standardization of a sliding-scale insulin protocol, served as a template throughout the LM, MHS for reducing variance and enhancing safety. STANDARDIZING INSULIN ADMINISTRATION: A single sliding-scale insulin protocol for regular insulin

Legal Barriers to Implementing AI-Enabled Emergency Medical Services in Korea: Focus on the Medical Service Act, Emergency Medical Service Act, and Personal Information Protection Act.

OBJECTIVES: In prehospital and in-hospital emergency care, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled emergency medical services (EMS) systems are reshaping clinical workflows through real-time triage, automated hospital assignment, telemedicine, and biometric monitoring. However, their implementation in Korea has revealed substantial legal and regulatory barriers. This study analyzed the structural incompatibilities between AI-enabled EMS and Korea's current legal framework, with particular attention to the Medical Service Act, Emergency Medical Service Act, and Personal Information Protection Act.

Complexity of the pediatric trauma care process: Implications for multi-level awareness.

Trauma is the leading cause of disability and death in children and young adults in the US. While much is known about the medical aspects of inpatient pediatric trauma care, not much is known about the processes and roles involved in in-hospital care. Using human factors engineering (HFE) methods, we combine interview, archival document and trauma registry data to describe how intra-hospital care transitions affect process and team complexity. Specifically, we identify the 53 roles directly involved in patient care in each hospital unit and describe the 3324 total transitions between hospital

The Importance of Electronic Health Record Access For Accurately Completing Drug Regimen Reviews.

OBJECTIVE: To challenge the standard of practice by evaluating the identification of medication discrepancies found depending on type of access to an electronic health record (EHR). In other words, is there a difference in the number of discrepancies between a pharmacist with only access to the postacute long-term care (PALTC) EHR (ie, single-access pharmacist [SAP]) compared with a pharmacist with access to both the PALTC and hospital EHRs (ie, dual-access pharmacist DAP) In October 2018, the Improving Medicare PostAcute Care Transformation (IMPACT) Act mandated admission drug review (DRR) up

Can Vertical Integration Reduce Hospital Readmissions? A Difference-in-Differences Approach.

BACKGROUND: Vertical integration is expected to improve communication and coordination between inpatient care and care after discharge. Despite being used across health systems worldwide, evidence about its impact on readmissions is sparse and contradictory. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of vertical integration on hospital readmissions. RESEARCH DESIGN, SUBJECTS, AND MEASURES: Using difference-in-differences we compared readmissions before and after vertical integration in 6 Portuguese hospitals for years 2004-2013. A control group with 6 similar hospitals not integrated was utilized. Cons
