From February 1999 to January 2000, a control programme to prevent the spread multi-resistant bacteria (MRB) was implemented in a French teaching hospital. This programme focused on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterobacteriaceae producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL), and was based on the application of barrier precautions (washing hands with antiseptic soaps, wearing disposable gloves and gowns, identifying MRB carriers). No changes in antibiotic policy occurred during the year. Our aim was to conduct an evaluation of this programme by measuring incidenc

One-hundred and fifty isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were collected from different patients' specimens at Showa University Fujigaoka Hospital between April and August 1996. The 23 isolates resistant to piperacillin (minimum inhibitory concentration, >or=100 microg/ml) were widely distributed in the hospital wards. Using polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and isoelectric focusing (IEF) methods, we detected OXA-4 beta-lactamase hydrolyzing penams in 4 of the resistant isolates (17%) with O-serotype E. However, no other external beta-lactamase was det

A 48-year-old man was diagnosed with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium. He had been suffering from dyspnea during light exercise since early February 1997, which worsened with time. Eventually, he visited our hospital on February 14. He was admitted urgently because orthopnea was observed and chest radiogram showed massive left pleural effusion. The diagnoses were pulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculous pleuritis. Echocardiography at admission showed generalized hypokinesis of the left ventricle, so we suspected that his condition was complicated by myocarditis. However,

Enterococci isolated from different body sites were tested for high-level gentamicin resistance. A total of 259 enterococcal isolates were screened for resistance (MIC, greater than 2,000 micrograms/ml) by a broth-tube method. Thirty-nine (15.1%) were found to exhibit resistance and were confirmed by agar screening (1,000 micrograms/ml) and agar dilution MIC determinations. The majority of isolates also showed high-level resistance to kanamycin and streptomycin. The remaining isolates showed high-level resistance to gentamicin and kanamycin but not streptomycin. Synergy testing of several isol

Enterococci are major causes of both community-acquired and healthcare-associated infections. The rapid global dissemination of multidrug-resistant clones poses a major challenge to clinical management and infection control. The aim for the present study was to investigate the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance patterns, virulence genes, and molecular epidemiology of Enterococcus species isolated from clinical specimens in university hospitals of Sfax, Tunisia. A descriptive, hospital-based, cross-sectional surveillance study was conducted between March 2020 and February 2021. It included al

Hospital wastewater represents a critical hotspot for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), serving both as an environmental reservoir and a transmission pathway for multidrug-resistant bacteria into receiving ecosystems. The intense antibiotic selective pressure within healthcare facilities promotes the emergence, persistence and amplification of resistant strains, posing substantial risks to public health and environmental integrity. This study aimed to characterize Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates recovered from hospital wastewater effluents in multiple cities across G

Background: Medical device-associated infections represent a major component of healthcare-associated infections. Biofilm formation promotes microbial persistence on device surfaces, reduces antimicrobial susceptibility, and contributes to multidrug resistance (MDR), complicating diagnosis and treatment. Materials and Method: This study investigated biofilm production and antimicrobial resistance in microorganisms recovered from 100 indwelling and implantable medical devices, including urinary and venous catheters, urethral stents, catheter tips, and orthopedic or prosthetic materials, collect

BACKGROUND: In veterinary medicine, particularly concerning dogs and cats, there is limited data regarding vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). However, multidrug-resistant Enterococcus is frequently identified, raising concerns about the potential for spreading these resistant microorganisms to humans due to their zoonotic nature. This study aimed to identify VRE colonizing animals admitted to a veterinary hospital and to determine the presence of the major resistance genes responsible for vancomycin resistance.
RESULTS: Enterococcus was found to carry the vanA gene in 52.54% of cases, t

Acinetobacter baumannii is a clinically important pathogen capable of causing serious nosocomial infections and acquiring resistance to antimicrobials, particularly carbapenems, making treatment difficult and prolonging hospital stays. In Latin America, high carbapenem-resistance rates have been described among A. baumannii isolates, however, Paraguay is one of the countries with limited data in this regard. Therefore, we aimed to investigate resistance rates of A. baumannii isolates from the National Hospital of Itaugua (NHI), Paraguay, from their database of 2022, and from December 2023 to F
