Internal regulatory systems--common consistent patterns in the parasite-host relationships with specific parasites.

While studying the population ecology of cattle warble flies (Diptera, Hypodermatidae) in Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union and Mongolia a firm internal regulatory system, determining the population density of parasites and operating on the principle of negative feedback, was demonstrated. The negative binomial distribution proved to be a suitable model in other parasite groups as well. The internal regulatory systems are common consistent patterns in the parasite-host relationship with specific parasites. These consistent patterns and the methodical approach to them are of wider importance not

Neospora caninum infection specifically suppresses the expression of a host lncRNA XR_001919077.1 to facilitate parasite propagation by modulating host cell mitochondrial function and autophagy.

Neospora caninum is one of the most common pathogens causing reproductive failure in ruminants (e.g., cattle and goats) worldwide. However, due to a poor understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of N. caninum infection, no effective drugs and vaccines are currently available. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to be important regulators involved in a great number of physiological and pathological processes. Our previous study found that N. caninum infection induced significantly aberrant expression of lncRNA profiles in caprine endometrial epithelial cells (EECs). In the prese

Donor-derived cytomegalovirus-specific CD8+ T cells restricted to shared, donor-specific, or host-specific HLA after HLA mismatched hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Immune reconstitution after human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-mismatched (haploidentical) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HCT) can significantly influence long-term outcomes. The three possible HLA haplotypes after transplantation are: one carried by both the patient and the donor (shared HLA), one by donor only (donor-specific HLA), and one by patient only (host-specific HLA), and the donor T cells remain restricted to one of these three haplotypes. Understanding the presence of donor T cells restricted to each haplotype may provide more detailed insights into post-transplant immun

Waterborne Viruses and F-Specific Coliphages in Mixed-Use Watersheds: Microbial Associations, Host Specificities, and Affinities with Environmental/Land Use Factors.

UNLABELLED: From the years 2008 to 2014, a total of 1,155 water samples were collected (spring to fall) from 24 surface water sampling sites located in a mixed-used but predominantly agricultural (i.e., dairy livestock production) river basin in eastern Ontario, Canada. Water was analyzed for viable F-specific DNA (F-DNA) and F-specific RNA (F-RNA) (genogroup I [GI] to GIV) coliphage and a suite of molecularly detected viruses (norovirus [GI to GIV], torque teno virus [TTV], rotavirus, kobuvirus, adenovirus, astrovirus, hepatitis A, and hepatitis E). F-DNA and F-RNA coliphage were detected in

Two known and one new species of Proctoeces from Australian teleosts: Variable host-specificity for closely related species identified through multi-locus molecular data.

Species of Proctoeces Odhner, 1911 (Trematoda: Fellodistomidae) have been reported from a wide range of marine animals globally. Members of the genus tend to lack strongly distinguishing morphological features for diagnosis, making identification difficult and the true number of species in the genus contentious. Combined morphological and molecular analyses were used to characterise three species of Proctoeces from Moreton Bay and the southern Great Barrier Reef. Data for two ribosomal regions and one mitochondrial region were generated for specimens collected from Australia. Three unique 18S-

Redescription of Babesia capreoli (Enigk and Friedhoff, 1962) from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus): isolation, cultivation, host specificity, molecular characterisation and differentiation from Babesia divergens.

The recent use of the sole molecular identification of Babesia infecting European cervids has led to confusion between the closely related Babesia divergens and Babesia capreoli, and to their grouping together as "B. divergens-like". In order to clarify this taxonomic confusion, Babesia from roe deer, cattle and human blood were isolated, cultured and their biological as well as molecular characteristics compared. On this basis, we conclude that: (i) the parasites isolated from roe deer blood are B. capreoli; (ii) there are no intraspecific variations in the 18S rDNA within B. capreoli and B.

Diversity of bartonellae in mites (Acari: Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae) of boreal forest bats: Association of host specificity of mites and habitat selection of hosts with vector potential.

Research into various bacterial pathogens that can be transmitted between different animals and may have zoonotic potential has led to the discovery of different strains of Bartonella sp. in bats and their associated ectoparasites. Despite their enormous species diversity, only a few studies have focussed on the detection of bacterial pathogens in insectivorous bats of boreal forests and their associated Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae mites. We collected and molecularly analysed mite samples from forest-dwelling bat species distributed all along the boreal belt of the Palearctic, from Centra

Host Tau Genotype Specifically Designs and Regulates Tau Seeding and Spreading and Host Tau Transformation Following Intrahippocampal Injection of Identical Tau AD Inoculum.

Several studies have demonstrated the different characteristics of tau seeding and spreading following intracerebral inoculation in murine models of tau-enriched fractions of brain homogenates from AD and other tauopathies. The present study is centered on the importance of host tau in tau seeding and the molecular changes associated with the transformation of host tau into abnormal tau. The brains of three adult murine genotypes expressing different forms of tau-WT (murine 4Rtau), hTau (homozygous transgenic mice knock-out for murine tau protein and heterozygous expressing human forms of 3Rta

Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis Induces Host Genotype-Specific Colonic Epithelial and Immune Responses in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer pathogenesis involves complex interactions between multiple risk factors including somatic mutations and microbial dysbiosis. A number of individual microbiota members have been implicated in colorectal cancer, including enterotoxigenic strains of Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF). Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis promotes inflammation in mouse models, which has been mechanistically linked to colon tumorigenesis. We hypothesized that ETBF would promote distinct patterns of colonic damage and inflammation in mice expressing different oncogenic mutations. METHODS: Mi

Viral Comorbidities Remodel Host Transcriptome and Redox Signaling in an NADPH Oxidase Isoform-Specific Manner.

Viral comorbidities elicit complex host responses by activating redox-sensitive signaling pathways, prominently those regulated by NADPH oxidase (Nox) enzymes. Nox are critical components of host defense, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) that modulate key cellular signaling cascades. Under normal physiological conditions, Nox activity is tightly controlled; however, viral infections frequently disrupt this regulation, leading to aberrant upregulation of specific Nox isoforms. Elevated expression of individual Nox enzymes has been observed in infections such as influenza A and hepatitis

Sex-Specific Signatures of Circulating Protein and Cellular Host Responses Predicting COVID-19 Severity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although COVID-19 is generally more severe in males, data on sex-specific differences in the predictive value of commonly used inflammatory biomarkers remain limited. The study aimed to evaluate the sex-specific prognostic performance of selected biomarkers during the Alpha variant wave. METHODS: In single-center study, univariate and multivariable regressions analyses, along with receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses, were performed to assess the association of acute-phase proteins, cytokines, and white blood cell indices (at admission and 7 days later

Transcriptomic Dissection of Bothrops moojeni Venom Reveals Fraction-Specific Modulation of Host Cellular Pathways.

Snake venom is a remarkably complex cocktail of bioactive molecules capable of hijacking diverse host physiological processes, yet how individual venom components drive these cellular responses remains a bit of a black box. To map these dynamics, we ran a comparative transcriptomic analysis on human osteoclastogenic cultures, exposing them continuously to crude Bothrops moojeni venom and its high (HMM) and low (LMM) molecular mass fractions throughout differentiation. This allowed us to capture the cumulative transcriptional shifts that unfold across the entire lifecycle of osteoclast developm

Strain-specific variation in virulence and host-immune modulation across the Cryptococcus gattii species complex.

Cryptococcus gattii is an environmental yeast capable of causing severe infections in immunocompetent hosts. Its virulence mechanisms remain less characterized than those of C. neoformans. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of major virulence factors and the immunomodulatory potential of eight C. gattii strains representing five genotypes and multiple sequence types (STs). Virulence traits-including capsule thickness, melanin and laccase production, phospholipase, hemolysin, urease, and DNase activities-were assessed using standardized in vitro assays. In vivo pathogenicity was evalua

Host-specific platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase selectively remodels diacylglycerophospholipids to control schistosome development.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis, one of the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases, is treated exclusively with praziquantel, which targets only adult worms. High reinfection rates and the potential emergence of drug resistance emphasize the need for a deeper understanding of host-parasite developmental biology for innovative therapeutic targets. Most studies have focused on parasite-derived immunomodulators and proteolytic enzymes essential for host invasion, while the contribution of host-derived factors to parasite development has remained largely unexplored. Here, we identify and functiona

Specific host factors determine resistance in a North American crayfish to the crayfish plague, Aphanomyces astaci.

The crayfish plague is caused by the oomycete Aphanomyces astaci with North American crayfish (for example Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus clarkii) serving as carriers and vectors for this pathogen. This poses a constant threat to native crayfish in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia, which all are highly susceptible to this pathogen. In this study we now show how the symbiotic balance between the pathogen and its host are maintained at the molecular level. The host factors involved in this balance between the pathogen, A. astaci and the host, P. leniusculus, are one glycine-ri

Organ-specific Toxocara canis larvae migration and host immune response in experimentally infected mice.

We investigated organ specific Toxocara canis larval migration in mice infected with T. canis larvae. We observed the worm burden and systemic immune responses. Three groups of BALB/c mice (n=5 each) were orally administered 1,000 T. canis 2nd stage larvae to induce larva migrans. Mice were sacrificed at 1, 3, and 5 weeks post-infection. Liver, lung, brain, and eye tissues were collected. Tissue from 2 mice per group was digested for larval count, while the remaining 3 mice underwent histological analysis. Blood hematology and serology were evaluated and compared to that in a control uninfecte

Exploring the second intermediate hosts and morphology of human- and cat-specific Opisthorchis viverrini-like populations.

Infection by the zoonotic fish-borne trematode, Opisthorchis viverrini, remains a crucial health issue in Thailand and neighboring countries. Recently, molecular analysis revealed two populations of putative O. viverrini: one found primarily in human hosts ("human-specific" population) and the other primarily in cats ("cat-specific" population). It is unclear how the infective stages (metacercariae) of these different populations circulate among definitive and reservoir hosts in nature. To gain an insight into this, mitochondrial cox1 and nad1 gene sequences of metacercariae from fish intermed
