The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) provided individuals and families who were either at-risk or currently experiencing homelessness with time-limited financial and housing support services. Evaluations of HPRP showed a high rate of family placement into permanent housing. However, little research has explored immediate and longitudinal outcomes for families enrolled in HPRP. Using Homeless Management Information System data from Indianapolis, Indiana, we examined demographic and program-related predictors of families entering permanent housing and their risk of ree

INTRODUCTION: Smoke-free policies (SFP) in multi-unit housing are a promising tool for reducing exposure to tobacco smoke among residents. Concerns about increased housing instability due to voluntary or involuntary transitions induced by SFPs have been a primary barrier to greater widespread adoption. The impact of SFP implementation on transitions out of public housing in federally funded public housing authorities in Massachusetts was evaluated.
METHODS: Tenancy data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development were used to determine the time from admission to transitioning out of

Families' experience of homelessness is typically examined from the perspective of parents during or shortly after a shelter stay. Parents complain about rules, surveillance, crowding, and challenges to parenting in both homeless shelters and in doubling up with other households (sharing the others' homes), and relief when they attain their own place. The current study uses qualitative interviews to examine the retrospective views of housing and homelessness among young adults who were homeless as children with their families. We compare their perspectives to earlier reports of parents' contem

OBJECTIVE: This longitudinal study tested whether developmental timing of exposure to housing mobility exacerbates behavior problems in an at-risk sample of youth.
METHOD: Participants were 2,442 youth 4 to 16 years old at risk for child maltreatment followed at 3 time points over a 36-month follow-up. Caregivers reported on youth externalizing behaviors at each assessment. Latent growth models examined the effect of housing mobility on behavior problems after accounting for change in cognitive development, family instability, child gender, ethnicity, family income, and caregiver mental healt

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies examining the life trajectories of young people after they have exited homelessness have identified concerns with persistent social and economic exclusion, struggles to shake off identities of homelessness, and housing instability. This pilot study sought to explore the feasibility of improving socioeconomic inclusion outcomes by bolstering identity capital (sense of purpose and control, self-efficacy and self-esteem) among young people who had experienced homelessness.
METHODS: Nineteen individuals (aged 18-26) who had transitioned out of homelessness within

BACKGROUND: People without stable housing-and Veterans specifically-are at increased risk of suicide. This study assessed whether unstably housed Veterans' participation in homeless services is associated with reduced risk of all-cause and suicide mortality.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used a sample of 169 221 Veterans across the US who self-reported housing instability between 1 October 2012 and 30 September 2016. Multivariable Cox regression models assessed the association between Veterans' utilisation of homeless services and all-cause and suicide mortality, adjusting for soci

BACKGROUND: Housing instability has been associated with poor health outcomes among people who inject drugs (PWID). This study investigates the associations of local-level housing and economic conditions with homelessness among a large sample of PWID, which is an underexplored topic to date.
METHODS: PWID in this cross-sectional study were recruited from 19 large cities in the USA as part of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance. PWID provided self-reported information on demographics, behaviours and life events. Homelessness was defined as residing on the street, in a shelter, in a single roo

IMPORTANCE: Eviction and housing loss are pressing public health concerns. Understanding how caregivers' stress about eviction or loss of housing is associated with specific childhood psychiatric issues across development is important.
OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between stress about eviction or loss of housing and caregiver-reported child depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and behavioral problems, while adjusting for sociodemographic factors.

BACKGROUND: For transition-aged youth experiencing homelessness (TAYEH) moving to transitional housing, a motivational network intervention (MNI) may help modify high-risk networks, thereby reducing substance use and strengthening prosocial connections.
METHODS: Thirty-six TAYEH received a four-session MNI integrated into usual housing case management or usual case management. Intervention acceptability, feasibility, and motivational interviewing fidelity were evaluated.
RESULTS: Nearly all participants would recommend the MNI to others, formed goals, and believed the program improved their

We sought to explore family planning needs and experiences in housing-insecure women. We recruited 90 women (median age 29y) across Salt Lake County, Utah to complete a self-administered survey, and 15 of them also completed a qualitative interview. Of those at risk for unintended pregnancy, 27 (59%) reported not using their ideal contraceptive method. Reported barriers included cost and inability to find a provider. Participants described the conflicting role of pregnancy as a window to health care and other services, as well as the competing challenges of high-risk sex and physical safety. A

BACKGROUND: Research exploring associations between exposure to social determinants of health and breastfeeding is needed to identify breastfeeding barriers. Housing insecurity and household conditions (chaos and crowding) may affect breastfeeding by increasing maternal stress and discomfort and decreasing time available to breastfeed.
RESEARCH AIM: We aimed to examine the relationships between housing insecurity, breastfeeding exclusivity intention during the early postnatal period, and breastfeeding exclusivity at 6 months postpartum among a sample "at risk" for suboptimal breastfeeding rat

While the adverse effects of housing insecurity on mental health are known, much less is known about the modifiers underlying these effects. The aim of this study was to analyze the mental health of people with housing insecurity by housing tenure and considering the coexistence of other life insecurities (energy poverty and food insecurity). We conducted a cross-sectional study through a survey performed in all people attending the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages or the Alliance against Energy Poverty of Barcelona for the first time between June 2017 and December 2019 and who report

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to determine the proportion of patients in our emergency department (ED) who are unhoused or marginally housed and when they typically present to the ED.
METHODS: We surveyed patients in an urban, safety-net ED from June-August 2018, using a sampling strategy that met them at all times of day, every day of the week. Patients used two social needs screening tools with additional questions on housing during sampling shifts representing two full weeks. Housing status was determined using items validated for housing stability, including PRAPARE, the Accountable Hea

BACKGROUND: Child abuse has deleterious impacts for children across their lifespan. Understanding the pathways in which child abuse occurs is critical for targeting prevention efforts. The trust and bonds between neighbors may play a preventive role against child abuse, with parents receiving support from those who are geographically close. Such relationships may guard against housing insecurity, which is related to child abuse.
OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the relationships between social cohesion, housing insecurity, and child abuse.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study relies on d

BACKGROUND: People leaving prison face significant barriers to reintegration, often resulting in homelessness, which exacerbates health issues and increases recidivism. Critical time interventions aim to support vulnerable individuals during significant life transitions by providing time-limited, emotional and practical support. While effective in other contexts, the impact of housing-led critical time interventions for people leaving prison in the United Kingdom remains unclear. The PHaCT study was a pilot randomised controlled trial of a housing-led critical time intervention for people leav

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDoH), including factors like income, education, and housing, can influence health outcomes and medication adherence, especially among emergency department (ED) patients. This study explores the relationship between SDoH and medication adherence among patients in urban EDs.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey across three geographically diverse urban EDs from May 2022 to February 2024 among ED patients aged ≥18 who were taking ≥4 prescription medications or ≥ 1 "high-risk" medication, including immunosuppressants, antiepileptics, sedativ

BACKGROUND: The potential connection between social determinants of health (SDoH), cardiovascular health, and overactive bladder (OAB) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between cumulative and individual unfavorable SDoH and OAB, and to evaluate the extent to which cardiovascular health was statistically associated with these associations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the NHANES 2005–2018 cycles. Unemployment, low income, low education, food insecurity, lack of healthcare access, lack of health insurance, housing instability, and being u

INTRODUCTION: Eviction affects millions of households in the United States and is an increasingly recognized social determinant of health. Pregnant women may be particularly vulnerable, as housing instability during pregnancy can contribute to adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. However, this association has not been systematically synthesized. This scoping review aims to address this gap by evaluating existing evidence and identifying priorities for future research.
METHOD: This scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework to identify studies published between 2005

As the US health care system moves to expand access to and quality of medical care, the importance of addressing patient-level social needs and community-level social determinants of health (SDOH) is increasingly being recognized. This study evaluates individual- and community-level needs of housing (one of the SDOH domains) across the patient population of an academic medical center and explores how the level of housing needs impacts health care utilization. The authors performed a descriptive analysis of housing issues identified in both structured and unstructured (eg, clinical notes) data
