Rare and emerging viral infections in transplant recipients.

Emerging viral pathogens include newly discovered viruses as well as previously known viruses that are either increasing, or threatening to increase in incidence. While often first identified in the general population, they may affect transplant recipients, in whom their manifestations may be atypical or more severe. Enhanced molecular methods have increased the rate of viral discovery but have not overcome the problem of demonstrating pathogenicity. At the same time, improved clinical diagnostic methods have increased the detection of reemerging viruses in immunocompromised patients. In this

Clinical assessment and improved diagnosis of bocavirus-induced wheezing in children, Finland.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a widespread respiratory virus. To improve diagnostic methods, we conducted immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM enzyme immunoassays with recombinant virus-like particles of HBoV as antigen. Acute-phase and follow-up serum samples from 258 wheezing children and single serum samples from 115 healthy adults in Finland were examined. Our assays had a sensitivity of 97% and a specificity of 99.5%. Of adults, 96% had immunity; none had an acute infection. Of 48 children with serologically diagnosed acute HBoV infections, 45 were viremic and 35 had virus in nasopharyngeal aspirate

Patterns of Non-influenza Respiratory Viruses Among Severe Acute Respiratory Infection Cases in Burkina Faso: A Surveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: Although influenza viruses cause only one-fifth of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) in Burkina Faso, the other viral causes of SARI remain poorly investigated to inform clinical and preventive decision making. METHODS: Between 2016 and 2019, we prospectively enrolled inpatients meeting the World Health Organization (WHO) case definition of SARI in Burkina Faso. Results of viral etiologies among inpatients tested negative for influenza using the Fast Track Diagnostics Respiratory Kits (FTD-33) were reported. RESULTS: Of 1541 specimens tested, at least one respiratory vir

Development of a multiplex real-time RT-PCR assay for simultaneous detection of 18 respiratory viruses.

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are a major global health burden with high morbidity and mortality, mainly affecting children under 5 years old and people over 60 years old. The majority of ARTIs are caused by respiratory viruses, such as influenza virus (IFV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human rhinovirus (HRV), human parainfluenza virus (HPIV), human adenovirus (HAdV), human coronavirus (HCoV), human bocavirus (HBoV) and human metapneumovirus (HMPV). Accurate and sensitive diagnosis of respiratory viruses is crucial for clinical treatment and management of patients with ARTI

SARS-CoV-2, other respiratory viruses and bacteria in aerosols: Report from Kuwait's hospitals.

The role of airborne particles in the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is well explored. The novel coronavirus can survive in aerosol for extended periods, and its interaction with other viral communities can cause additional virulence and infectivity. This baseline study reports concentrations of SARS-CoV-2, other respiratory viruses, and pathogenic bacteria in the indoor air from three major hospitals (Sheikh Jaber, Mubarak Al-Kabeer, and Al-Amiri) in Kuwait dealing with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. The indoor aerosol samples showed

Clinical characteristics of children with viral single- and co-infections and a petechial rash.

BACKGROUND: Children with petechial rash are more likely to undergo invasive diagnostics, to be treated with antibiotics for potential bacterial infection and to be hospitalized. However, viruses have also been associated with petechial rash. Nonetheless, a systematic analysis of viral infections with modern available techniques as quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in the context of petechial rash is lacking. The purpose of this pediatric study was to prospectively uncover viral pathogens that may promote the emergence of petechiae and to analyze the correlation with the clinica

The disappearance of respiratory syncytial virus and influenza viruses in children during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic - are non-pharmaceutical interventions as effective as vaccines?

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory viral diseases are common in children. A viral diagnostic test is necessary, because COVID-19 shows signs and symptoms similar to those of common respiratory viruses. The article aims at analyzing the presence of respiratory viruses that were common before the pandemic in children who were tested for suspected COVID-19, and is also concerned with how common respiratory viruses were impacted by COVID-19 measures during the second year of pandemic. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nasopharyngeal swabs were examined to detect the presence of respiratory viruses. The respiratory panel

Human rhinoviruses: the cold wars resume.

BACKGROUND: Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) are the most common cause of viral illness worldwide but today, less than half the strains have been sequenced and only a handful examined structurally. This viral super-group, known for decades, has still to face the full force of a molecular biology onslaught. However, newly identified viruses (NIVs) including human metapneumovirus and bocavirus and emergent viruses including SARS-CoV have already been exhaustively scrutinized. The clinical impact of most respiratory NIVs is attributable to one or two major strains but there are 100+ distinct HRVs and, b

Nasopharyngeal metagenomics of symptomatic healthcare workers provides insights into the respiratory microbiome and antimicrobial resistance.

Respiratory infections represent a significant risk for healthcare workers (HCWs), particularly during viral outbreaks. This study applied metagenomic sequencing to characterize microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in nasopharyngeal swabs from HCWs presenting respiratory symptoms. Samples from 161 HCWs collected at a tertiary hospital in 2020-2021 were screened using FilmArray; negative samples were analyzed by metagenomic sequencing. After removal of human reads, sequences were taxonomically classified into viral, bacterial, and eukaryotic groups, and AMR genes were
