The impact of hunger and resource scarcity on children's fairness judgments and behaviors: A developmental cross-national investigation.

This study investigated how hunger and poverty influence children's willingness to share resources with a hungry recipient, as well as how these factors interact across development. Participants included 918 children aged 5 to 8 years from Bolivia, Haiti, and Cambodia, who were recruited from neighborhoods within each country varying in socioeconomic status. Children completed sharing tasks both before and after lunch. Linear mixed model analyses revealed that neighborhood poverty and acute hunger jointly influenced children's sharing behavior towards hungry recipients, but only when both fact

"Fulfilling the hunger": A qualitative study to understand the etiology of binge eating in adolescents experiencing food insecurity.

Food-insecure populations experience increased risk for binge eating. This study examined how food insecurity contributes to development of binge eating during adolescence-a key period for its onset-alongside broader contributing factors in this life stage. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 adolescents ages 12-19 years who reported past-year food insecurity (via the Child Food Insecurity Experiences Scale) and any past-month objective and/or subjective binge eating (via items from the Youth Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire). Grounded theory analysis yielded

Eating in the Absence of Hunger in Hispanic Preschoolers: Relationships with Child Sex, Food Preference, and Weight Status.

Background/Objectives: This study examines the relationship of eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) with child sex, food preference, and body mass index (BMI) percentiles in primarily Hispanic preschoolers, an understudied population. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data from 211 children (79% Hispanic) aged 3 to 5 years from low-income families who completed a cluster randomized controlled trial from September 2017 to June 2020. Weight and height were used to calculate BMI percentiles. Sweet (animal crackers) and salty (pretzels) snacks were used to conduct a validated classroom-ba

Neurohormonal response patterns to hunger, satiation, and postprandial fullness in normal weight, anorexia nervosa, and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Food intake is regulated by homeostatic and hedonic systems that interact in a complex neuro-hormonal network. Dysregulation in energy intake can lead to obesity (OB) or anorexia nervosa (AN). However, little is known about the neurohormonal response patterns to food intake in normal weight (NW), OB, and AN. MATERIAL & METHODS: During an ad libitum nutrient drink (Ensure®) test (NDT), participants underwent three pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL) MRI scans. The first scan was performed before starting the NDT after a > 12 h overnight fast (Hunger), the second after

Inhaled furosemide for relief of air hunger versus sense of breathing effort: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Inhaled furosemide offers a potentially novel treatment for dyspnoea, which may reflect modulation of pulmonary stretch receptor feedback to the brain. Specificity of relief is unclear because different neural pathways may account for different components of clinical dyspnoea. Our objective was to evaluate if inhaled furosemide relieves the air hunger component (uncomfortable urge to breathe) but not the sense of breathing work/effort of dyspnoea. METHODS: A randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial in 16 healthy volunteers studied in a university research labor

Do drives drive the train of thought?-Effects of hunger and sexual arousal on mind-wandering behavior.

Physiological needs that are currently unfulfilled are known to affect human cognition and behavior. The present study investigates whether and how the temporary activation of two primary physiological needs, namely hunger and sexual arousal, influence both the frequency and the contents of mind-wandering episodes. To induce hunger, one group of participants fasted for a minimum of five hours whereas another group of participants was exposed to audio material with explicit sexual content to provoke sexual arousal. Both groups as well as an additional control group, which had not received hunge

Endogenous Opioid Signaling in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex is Required for the Expression of Hunger-Induced Impulsive Action.

Opioid transmission and dysregulated prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity have both been implicated in the inhibitory-control deficits associated with addiction and binge-type eating disorders. What remains unknown, however, is whether endogenous opioid transmission within the PFC modulates inhibitory control. Here, we compared intra-PFC opioid manipulations with a monoamine manipulation (d-amphetamine), in two sucrose-reinforced tasks: progressive ratio (PR), which assays the motivational value of an incentive, and differential reinforcement of low response rates (DRLs), a test of inhibitory cont

Hunger is the best spice: effects of starvation in the antennal responses of the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus.

Blood-sucking insects strongly rely on olfactory cues to find their vertebrate hosts. As in other insects with different lifestyles, it has been shown that endogenous and exogenous factors modulate olfactory responses. The triatomine bug Rhodnius prolixus is an important vector of Chagas disease and a classical model for studies of physiology and behavior. In this species, the behavioral response to host-derived odorants is modulated by both the time of the day and the starvation. Here I investigated the peripheral neural mechanisms underlying these modulatory effects. For this, I measured the

Coffee for morning hunger pangs. An examination of coffee and caffeine on appetite, gastric emptying, and energy intake.

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and has a number of potential health benefits. Coffee may influence energy expenditure and energy intake, which in turn may affect body weight. However, the influence of coffee and its constituents - particularly caffeine - on appetite remains largely unexplored. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of coffee consumption (with and without caffeine) on appetite sensations, energy intake, gastric emptying, and plasma glucose between breakfast and lunch meals. In a double-blind, randomised crossover design. Particip

Relationship of arousal to circadian anticipatory behavior: ventromedial hypothalamus: one node in a hunger-arousal network.

The mechanisms by which animals adapt to an ever-changing environment have long fascinated scientists. Different forces, conveying information regarding various aspects of the internal and external environment, interact with each other to modulate behavioral arousal. These forces can act in concert or, at times, in opposite directions. These signals eventually converge and are integrated to influence a common arousal pathway which, depending on all the information received from the environment, supports the activation of the most appropriate behavioral response. In this review we propose that

Effects of posture on gastric emptying, transpyloric flow, and hunger after a glucose drink in healthy humans.

Previous studies suggest that posture has relatively little effect on gastric emptying of high-nutrient liquids; these studies have, however, only assessed overall rates of gastric emptying, whereas gastric emptying is known to be predominantly a pulsatile phenomenon. In healthy subjects perceptions of appetite, such as hunger, are inversely related to antral area and content; hence, changes in intragastric meal distribution induced by posture may affect appetite. Gastric emptying is a major determinant of postprandial glycemia. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of posture on

A step towards developing the expertise to control hunger and satiety: regulatory role of satiomem--a membrane proteoglycan.

Regulation of hunger and satiety is a complex process thought to be controlled by a complex interplay of neurotransmitters in the hypothalamic region of the brain. Reduced food intake or anorexia has also been observed under various disease or disorder conditions including AIDS and cancer. On the other hand, increased appetite because of some impairment of central mechanisms regulating the food intake could also cause/obesity. A large number of substances including neuropeptides, hormones, drugs, and synthetic peptides have been implicated in the regulation of appetite and food intake behavior

Association between childhood hunger and depression or anxiety in later life: Insights from two case-control studies.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood hunger has been found to decelerate the risk of depression and anxiety, which have been reported to influence each other. However, the roles of depression and anxiety in the relationship between childhood hunger and these conditions has not been fully examined. Childhood hunger may increase the risk of depression through anxiety, while it may also increase the risk of anxiety through depression. METHODS: Two case-control studies were conducted using data from the 2017-2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Depression and anxiety were assessed by usin

Eating expectancies and hedonic hunger among individuals with bulimia-spectrum eating disorders who plan binge-eating episodes.

OBJECTIVE: Binge planning (BP; i.e., preparatory thoughts and actions to facilitate future binge-eating episodes) is hypothesized to distract individuals from negative affect and increase the salience of food. Thus, individuals who engage in BP may report greater positive eating expectancies (i.e., beliefs about the outcomes of eating) and hedonic hunger (i.e., desire to eat for pleasure), as BP may increase the likelihood of obtaining these expected outcomes; but empirical tests of this possibility are needed. METHOD: Prior to starting treatment, adults (N = 86) with bulimia-spectrum eating

The Zero Hunger and Brazil without Extreme Poverty programs: a step forward in Brazilian social protection policy.

Brazilian social protection programs have had consistent effects in reducing poverty and inequality among their respective target-groups: children, adolescents and pregnant and breastfeeding women. In 2011, the Brazil without Extreme Poverty program was launched as a strategy to eradicate extreme poverty by 2014. It makes the promotion of rights the core concept of the official political narrative. This study seeks to provide a systematic description of the Brazil without Extreme Poverty program and its initial results. A review of official documents and academic studies on the social protecti

Effects of hunger state on flavour pleasantness conditioning at home: flavour-nutrient learning vs. flavour-flavour learning.

UNLABELLED: This study examined acquired liking of flavour preferences through flavour-flavour and flavour-nutrient learning under hungry or sated conditions in a naturalistic setting. Each participant consumed one of three versions of a test drink at home either before lunch or after lunch: minimally sweetened ( CONTROL: 3% sucrose, 40 kcal), artificially sweetened (3% sucrose 40 kcal plus artificial sweeteners ASPARTAME) and sucrose-sweetened (SUCROSE: 9.9% sugar, 132 kcal). The test drink was an uncarbonated peach-flavoured iced tea served in visually identical drink cans (330 ml). Partici

Neural responses to visual food cues according to weight and hunger state: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Food cue reactivity shapes eating behavior and likely relates to weight and hunger states. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies, however, have yielded mixed results on the underlying neural correlates. We, therefore, conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effect of weight and hunger on neural responses to food cues. METHODS: We searched PubMed and Web of Science (2000-2022) for fMRI studies using visual food cues that reported participants' weight and hunger states (PROSPERO: CRD42022365310).
