[Follow-up study in German Hunting Terrier dogs with exercise induced metabolic myopathy].

OBJECTIVE: Exercise induced metabolic myopathy in German Hunting Terrier dogs is an autosomal-recessively inherited disorder, caused by a nonsense variant of the gene encoding for the very long-chain acyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (VLCAD) enzyme. Clinical signs include exercise- induced fatigue, muscle pain and weakness. In the present study, the long-term course of this disease was investigated over a period of 1 year in 9 affected German Hunting Terriers. The dogs were treated symptomatically with oral L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 and a special diet characterized by a low content of long-chain fatty ac

[Calcitriol induced hypercalcemia in a hunting dog with a disseminated Paecilomyces variotii infection].

A 5-year old hunting dog was presented with reduced appetite, weight loss and polyuria/polydipsia. Hematology and clinical chemistry revealed anemia, leukocytosis, increased liver enzymes, hypoalbuminemia and hypercalcemia. The cytological, pathohistological and microbiological examination identified a disseminated infection with the saprophytic mould fungus Paecilomyces variotii in the biopsies of the spleen and a lymph node. Determination of vitamin D metabolites confirmed a calcitriol induced hypercalcemia.

An epidemiological investigation of an idiopathic myopathy in hunting dogs in New Zealand.

AIM: To conduct an epidemiological investigation of an idiopathic myopathy, known as "Go Slow" (GSM), which was initially recognised in dogs used for pig hunting. A secondary aim was to describe the hunting activities, diet and health of dogs used for pig hunting in New Zealand. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between June 2014-June 2017. Cases of GSM in dogs were diagnosed by veterinarians using a combination of clinical history, physical examination findings, serum biochemistry and/or skeletal muscle histology. A telephone interview was conducted with the owner or primar

Hunting dogs as sentinel animals for monitoring infections with Trichinella spp. in wildlife.

BACKGROUND: Nematode parasites of the genus Trichinella are important foodborne pathogens transmitted by ingestion of striated muscles harbouring infective larvae. Wild carnivorous and omnivorous animals are the most important reservoirs of these parasites. Hunting activities play an important role in Trichinella spp. EPIDEMIOLOGY: The aim of the present work was to assess if serological detection of anti-Trichinella IgG in hunting dogs can be a tool to indirectly monitor Trichinella spp. infections in wildlife. METHODS: An ELISA and a Western blot (Wb) were developed and validated. To valid

In vivo therapeutic potential of Dicer-hunting siRNAs targeting infectious hepatitis C virus.

The development of RNA interference (RNAi)-based therapy faces two major obstacles: selecting small interfering RNA (siRNA) sequences with strong activity, and identifying a carrier that allows efficient delivery to target organs. Additionally, conservative region at nucleotide level must be targeted for RNAi in applying to virus because hepatitis C virus (HCV) could escape from therapeutic pressure with genome mutations. In vitro preparation of Dicer-generated siRNAs targeting a conserved, highly ordered HCV 5' untranslated region are capable of inducing strong RNAi activity. By dissecting th

Hunting practices increase the prevalence of Trichinella infection in wolves from European Russia.

From 1998 to 2000, 184 animals (82 wolves, 29 red foxes, 55 mustelids, 5 raccoon dogs, and 13 domestic dogs), mainly shot by hunters in the Tvier and Smoliensk regions of northwest European Russia, were tested for Trichinella larvae; 98 animals (53.3%) were found to be positive. The highest prevalence was detected in wolf (97.5%). Trichinella nativa was the most common species detected (98%). The diet of wolves was investigated by examining the stomach contents of 62 animals (75.6% of the total number of wolves examined for Trichinella). It consisted mainly of dog (36.4% of the total number of

Flyway-scale migration phenology identifies mismatches between migration timing and European hunting regulations.

The study of bird migration timing is pivotal for the identification of the onset of pre-breeding migration, when, according to the European regulatory framework, the hunting seasons should end following Article 7.4 of the EU Birds Directive. Member States may use different data sources, including citizen science platforms, to determine this onset. Here, we used data from eBird, a citizen science platform, to describe the timing of pre- and post-breeding migration of the Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) across the Western Palearctic. For EU Member States, we compared the onset dates of pre-bree

Endurance pursuit hunting among recent foragers and its relevance for hominin locomotor evolution.

Textual analysis of 425 cases of endurance pursuit hunts (EPHs) found in ethnohistoric and ethnographic sources reveals the diversity, extent, and effectiveness of the endurance pursuit tactic. Endurance pursuits involve persistently running after an encountered animal, often for hours, until it can be subdued, the tactic frequently involving bouts of walking and tracking. Building on this definition, we assess the plausibility of five hypotheses that could account for the evolution of endurance pursuit strategies in hominins: i) optimization of subsistence efficiency, ii) risk minimization, i

Food security drives local hunting of a boreal ungulate during a global pandemic.

Understanding how crises impact local hunters and wildlife is imperative for developing adaptive strategies to navigate these disruptions. COVID-19 caused widespread disruptions to socioecological systems, yet the response of local hunters to the global pandemic remains understudied. I examined hunting permit sales, harvest records, and hunter effort and motivation data to investigate how the pandemic influenced bison (Bison bison) hunters in the Yukon. Following the onset of COVID-19, the number of permits sold, and bison harvested, increased by 13% and 21%, respectively. Although harvest num

Perspectives of New York State residents on deer management, hunting, and predator reintroduction.

High white-tailed deer abundance in the United States represents an ecological and human health threat. Reducing deer populations by lethal means and facilitating return of large predators are two potential, but controversial, management options. We used an online questionnaire to measure perspectives on deer management and predator return among a stratified sample of New York State residents. We found widespread acceptance (> 70%) for reducing deer populations using lethal means if doing so would reduce Lyme disease, increase forest regeneration, protect native plants and animals, and improve

Distribution of Pseudorabies Virus Antigen in Hunting Dogs with Concurrent Paragonimus westermani Infection.

Following isolation of pseudorabies virus (PRV) from two hunting dogs in Oita prefecture, Japan, we investigated the PRV antigen distribution in the tissues of the infected animals. At necropsy, PRV-associated lesions included facial oedema, tonsillar and meningeal congestion, blotchy haemorrhages on the pericardium and mitral valves, and incomplete splenic contraction in one dog, with less prominent findings in the other dog. Multiple pulmonary nodules were seen in both cases, caused by the diploid form of Paragonimus westermani lung flukes, as confirmed by PCR-restriction fragment length pol

Distribution patterns of Babesia gibsoni infection in hunting dogs from nine Japanese islands.

Canine babesiosis constitutes a major global veterinary medical problem caused by tick-borne hemoparasites Babesia gibsoni and Babesia canis. Babesia gibsoni induces more severe clinical signs and is mainly transmitted by the ixodid Haemaphysalis longicornis. In Japan, B. gibsoni is primarily found in the western districts, with few records in the eastern parts. The aim of the current investigation was to evaluate distribution patterns of B. gibsoni infection in 9 Japanese islands and peninsulas using direct microscopy and PCR. Therefore, 196 hunting dogs were randomly sampled during the perio

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia and pyometra in three captive African hunting dogs (Lycaon pictus).

Pyometra and cystic endometrial hyperplasia are common in domestic canids and are suspected to develop as a consequence of elevated progesterone levels. Reports of uterine pathology in exotic canids are limited, with some speculating of association with contraception. This report describes pyometra, cystic endometrial hyperplasia, and ovariohysterectomy in three African hunting dogs (Lycaon pictus). Ovarian corpora lutea were detected in two of the dogs, suggesting endogenous progesterone production. One dog had a uterine adenocarcinoma and two had ovarian granulosa cell tumors. Clinical signs
