Combined stepladder incision and Sistrunk procedure for en bloc resection of supraclavicular thyroglossal duct cysts.

The accurate diagnosis and therapeutic strategies of thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) are challenging for surgeons if the opening with exudate is far from the hyoid bone. A 7-year-old boy presented with a right supraclavicular mass and persistent pus. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the fistula to the hyoid bone. Suspecting a TGDC, we combined the stepladder incision technique and the Sistrunk procedure. The first skin incision cut through the opening in a spindle shape, and the second incision was made in the skin just above the hyoid bone. This combined technique allow

Anatomical studies in the hyoid region of the mouse in term of evolutional importance.

The mouse hyoid region was studied in detail in term of its evolutional importance. A pair of small pyramidal-shaped "epiphyseal cornua" wedged between the body and the caudal cornua. It is suggested that the epiphyseal cornu is an independent element of the hyoid bone, and that it is not homologous with the typical hypohyal in other mammals. Just ventral of the tympanic bulla, there was a stylohyal, on which the "paroccipito-styloideus" and "paroccipitostylohyoideus" muscles (appellations by the authors) were attached. Ossification of the hyoid bone began at the attachments of the hyoid muscl

Meis2 controls skeletal formation in the hyoid region.

A vertebrate skull is composed of many skeletal elements which display enormous diversity of shapes. Cranial bone formation embodies a multitude of processes, i.e., epithelial-mesenchymal induction, mesenchymal condensation, and endochondral or intramembranous ossification. Molecular pathways determining complex architecture and growth of the cranial skeleton during embryogenesis are poorly understood. Here, we present a model of the hyoid apparatus development in Wnt1-Cre2-induced Meis2 conditional knock-out (cKO) mice. Meis2 cKO embryos develop an aberrant hyoid apparatus-a complete skeletal

Consideration of Hyoid Variability in the Diagnostic Workup of Fishbone Foreign Body Aspiration.

Fishbone foreign body (FFB) can lodge in the upper respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts and frequently cause discomfort. While FFBs are common, variations in the hyoid may present radiographically similarly. The authors present a case in which a 32-year-old woman presented with pain in the right neck with a globus sensation after eating fish. Examination, including flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy, did not reveal a foreign body. Given the patients' persistent symptoms, a noncontrast computed tomography was performed, demonstrating a radiopaque body superior to the right lateral hyoid bone, c

Genioplasty and Hyoid Advancement by Distraction Osteogenesis for the Correction of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in a Pediatric Patient.

Advancement genioplasty is one variation of genioglossus advancement (GA) and GA is a surgical intervention that can be applied for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) caused by hypopharyngeal collapse. The genioglossus muscle originates from the posterior surface of the midline mandible and inserts into the entire tongue mass and the body of the hyoid bone. Placing horizontal tension on the genioglossus muscle enlarges the posterior airway space. We use a modified GA that applies distraction osteogenesis to increase forward movement of the genioglossus muscle and also connects the bone transport se

Effect of Twin Block Therapy Versus Fixed Functional Appliances on Pharyngeal Airway Space in Skeletal Class II Patients: A Prospective Cephalometric Study.

BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusion is one of the most common malocclusion with varied prevalence. Functional therapy with appliances like Twin Block or Fixed functional appliances forms the mainstay of treatment in growing Class II patients. These patients might demonstrate narrow airway due to the retrognathic position of the mandible. This study investigated the effects of twin block and fixed functional appliance therapy (Forsus™ FRD) on the pharyngeal airway space in skeletal Class II patients. METHODS: Forty patients with Class II malocclusion were selected and divided into two equal grou

Hyoid displacement during swallowing function for completely edentulous subjects rehabilitated with mandibular implant retained overdenture.

BACKGROUND: Hyoid bone is attached to the mandible, tongue, larynx, temporal bone, and cervical spine via different types of muscles or ligaments. The tongue, mandible, and hyoid system play a crucial role in swallowing function. This within subject study aimed to evaluate the impact of mandibular implant overdentures on the displacement of the hyoid bones during the swallowing process. METHODS: Twenty five healthy edentulous subjects were selected for participating in the study. New complete dentures were constructed for all the participants. Subsequently two dental implants were inserted in

Simple laryngeal suspension procedure by suturing the digastric muscle to the periosteum of the mandible in neck dissection for tongue cancer.

PURPOSE: In this article, a simple, new laryngeal suspension procedure is described. The effect of hyoid bone suspension by suturing the digastric muscle to the periosteum of the mandible is analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To elucidate the effect of hyoid bone suspension, CT scans of 26 patients who underwent ipsilateral neck dissection with primary resection of tongue cancer were retrospectively reviewed, and the distance between the hyoid bone and the mandible was measured on the operated and unoperated sides of the neck. A total of 14 patients who underwent suturing of the digastric muscl

The Effect Of Hyoid Movement On Vocal Fold And False Vocal Fold Configurations In Excised Human Larynges.

OBJECTIVES: While it is generally understood that extrinsic muscle activation may change larynx position and orientation, its effect on vocal fold configuration, particularly the medial surface shape, remains largely unknown. In this study, the effects of hyoid bone movement on the true and false vocal fold configurations were investigated in excised human larynges. METHOD: For each larynx, a window was opened on one thyroid lamina to provide a medial view of the true vocal fold and false vocal fold. The larynx was mounted vertically with the cricoid cartilage fixed. The hyoid bone position w

Skeletal remodeling is responsible for the foramen in the skull for the hyoid artery in zebrafish.

Many nerves and blood vessels become embedded in bones during the development of vertebrates. Subsequent skeletal remodeling, however, enables the organisms to grow without interfering with the vascular or nervous functions. Here, we demonstrate that the zebrafish ceratohyal (Ch) foramen, a passage for the hyoid artery supplying blood to the eye, enlarges by bone growth rather than bone resorption. The Ch foramen is surrounded by a ring of three bones partitioned by cartilaginous growth plates, whereby bones are deposited bidirectionally as the fish grow. By contrast, during the larval to juve

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS-IDIOPATHIC HYOID MALFORMATION IN AN 8-YEAR-OLD WELSH SECTION D HORSE.

An 8-year-old gelding was evaluated for intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) at exercise. Standing laterolateral radiographs demonstrated an abnormal crossed appearance of the stylohyoid bones. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed abnormal positioning of the left stylohyoid bone and articulations with both the left thyrohyoid and ceratohyoid bones. Surgical treatment consisted of combined left ceratohyoidectomy and thyrohyoidectomy. Postoperatively the patient's presenting complaint resolved completely, with the horse returning to full work. Standing laterolateral radiograp

May ultrasonography be considered a useful tool for bedside screening of dysphagia in patients with acute stroke? A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a primary risk factor for pneumonia and affects around 50% of acute stroke patients. Systematic bedside swallowing screening of acute stroke patients is recommended before oral intake. Currently there is lack of comprehensive dysphagia assessment tools with robust good accuracy, clinical utility and cost-effectiveness. An altered hyoid bone movement may represent a major risk factor for aspiration. Ultrasonography quantitatively measures hyoid-larynx approximation, which was found reduced in stroke patients with dysphagia. Although ultrasonography was suggested for ass
