Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Sports Musculoskeletal Injuries.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a well-established treatment for a variety of conditions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the administration of 100% oxygen breathing in a pressure vessel at higher than atmospheric pressure (1 atmosphere absolute = 101 kPa). Typically, treatment is given daily for between 1 and 2 h at pressures of 2.0 to 2.8 ATA, depending on the indication. Sporting injuries are often treated over 3 to 10 sessions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been documented to be effective and is approved in 14 medical indications by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, including,

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Radiation-Induced Injuries.

Initial clinical uses of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) capitalized upon physical effects to drive offending gases back into solution and deliver more oxygen to tissues in early treatments of decompression sickness. HBO2 has a myriad of other effects, including stimulating angiogenesis and new cellular in growth for healing.

Clinical utility of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in dentistry.

This fuller impact of the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy within dentistry is taking greater notice with newer research findings. There are new advancements in research regarding postradiotherapy cases, osteonecrosis of the jaw, osteomyelitis, periodontal disease, and dental implants. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can even be used in conjunction with other procedures such as bone grafting. Although the research and clinical utility has come a long way, there are several complications to be mindful of during the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Efficacy of Adjunctive Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Osteoradionecrosis.

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a common consequence resulting from radiation in patients with cancer. Presently, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is proposed to have a role in improving wound healing in ORN patients. There is no strong scientific evidence to confirm the benefits of HBOT for treatment of ORN as an adjunctive treatment. This study aimed to determine the benefits of adjunctive treatment of HBOT in ORN. A retrospective study was conducted at the Srinagarind Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University, Thailand, between 2011 and 2017. The patients diagnosed with ORN, who r

[Hyperbaric oxygen and radiotherapy: From myth to reality].

Worldwide, more than a million people receive each year a curative radiotherapy. While local control and overall survival are steadily increasing, 5 to 15% of patients still develop above grade 2 late toxicities. Late toxicities treatments are complex. Hyperbaric oxygenation was shown to induce revascularization and healing of injured tissues, but indications are still debated. Through a literature review, we summarized the hyperbaric oxygenation indications in radiation-induced late toxicities. We also studied the knowledge and practice of French local radiation therapists. It seems that hype

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Despite established exposure limits and safety standards, and the availability of carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, each year 50,000 people in the United States visit emergency departments for CO poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur from brief exposures to high levels of CO, or from longer exposures to lower levels. Common symptoms include headaches, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, general malaise, and altered mental status. Some patients may have chest pain, shortness of breath and myocardial ischemia, and may require mechanical ventilation and treatment of shock. Individuals poisoned by

Evaluation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for chronic wounds.

BACKGROUND: Treating chronic wounds is challenging. Despite standard wound care, some chronic wounds fail to heal. Therefore, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) was developed as an adjunct to standard wound care. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of HBOT for treating chronic wounds due to a variety of causes at our institution. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients with chronic wounds treated with HBOT in addition to standard wound care at the Department of Dermatology, Nippon Medical School Hospital, from 2009 through 2012. Twenty-nine patients were reviewed (14 men and 15 wo

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute coronary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS), includes acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina, is common and may prove fatal. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) will improve oxygen supply to the threatened heart and may reduce the volume of heart muscle that perishes. The addition of HBOT to standard treatment may reduce death rate and other major adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of adjunctive HBOT for treating ACS. SEARCH STRATEGY: We updated the search of the following sources in June 2010, finding one further trial: the Cochrane Central Register of Contro

Hyperbaric oxygen for the treatment of radiation cystitis and proctitis.

Chronic radiation cystitis and radiation proctitis are known complications of the use of radiotherapy in the treatment of pelvic malignancies. These complications are, in part, due to endothelial damage and decreased vascularity and oxygenation to pelvic tissues. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be able to improve oxygenation and induce angiogenesis in damaged organs, resulting in recovery from radiation injury. Several studies have shown significant rates of response to hyperbaric oxygen treatment, however, no randomized trial exists to definitively demonstrate its effectiveness for cystitis and

Hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of calciphylaxis: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis, also referred to as calcific uraemic arteriolopathy, is a syndrome associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and causes necrotic skin ulcers, often leading to a fatal outcome. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO(2)) therapy has been used to enhance wound healing, but its role in the treatment of calciphylaxis is unclear. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective study of patients on renal replacement therapy with biopsy-proven calciphylaxis who were treated with HBO(2) between March 1997 and February 2000. RESULTS: Five patients were treated with HBO(2): three patients were o

[Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO): current standing].

For more than thirty years hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) has been an important and ultimate therapeutic tool in special indications. Hyperbaric oxygen improves tissue oxygenation, stimulates important mechanisms in wound healing and exerts beneficial effects on other biochemical and cellular processes. The properties of hyperbaric oxygen have built the rationale for its use as therapy of choice in patients with severe carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism, and as adjunctive therapy for the treatment of osteoradionecrosis, necrotizing fasciitis and compro

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for rhinocerebral fungal infection.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is an acutely fatal fungal infection that usually arises in the ethmoid sinuses, spreads into the orbits and then into the cranial cavity. It is typically seen in diabetic or immunocompromised patients. Therapy includes aggressive surgical debridement, administration of high-dose amphotericin-B and control of underlying predisposing conditions. Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is another treatment modality that appears to be promising; oxygen in sufficient concentrations is fungicidal and decreases acidosis thereby increasing tissue survival. It is important for th
